International Standard VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
LORD, remember what has happened to us. Pay attention, and look at our shame!1Yahweh, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace!
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, and our homes to foreigners.2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.
We are now orphans—without fathers— and our mothers are like widows.3We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows.
We pay to drink our own water, and our own wood is sold to us at high price.4We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price.
Our pursuers breathe down our necks; we are weary, but there is no rest for us.5We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest.
We made a deal with the Egyptians and the Assyrians for the price of food. 6We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food.
Our ancestors sinned and no longer exist yet we continue to bear the consequences of their sin.7Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment.
Slaves rule over us, and no one delivers us from their control. 8Slaves rule over us; no one rescues us from their hands.
We risk our lives to obtain our food, facing death in the desert.9We secure our food at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness.
Our skin blisters as from an oven, due to ravaging blasts of the famine.10Our skin is as hot as an oven from the ravages of hunger.
They have raped women in Zion, young women in the towns of Judah.11Women are raped in Zion, girls in the cities of Judah.
Princes they have hung by their hands; elders they have disrespected.12Princes are hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect.
Our young men must grind grain with a millstone; our youths stumble under the weight of wood.13Young men labor at millstones; boys stumble under loads of wood.
Our elders have ceased ruling at the gate; our young men have abandoned their music.14The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music.
The joy of our hearts has ceased, and our dancing has turned into dirges.15Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.
The crown has fallen from our head— woe to us, because we have sinned!16The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned.
This is why our hearts faint, and why our eyes grow dim:17Because of this, our heart is sick; because of these, our eyes grow dim:
Because Mount Zion is desolate; foxes roam around it.18because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate and has jackals prowling in it.
You, LORD, are forever— your throne endures from generation to generation.19You, LORD, are enthroned forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation.
So why have you completely forgotten us, forsaking us for so long?20Why have You forgotten us forever, abandoned us for our entire lives?
Restore us to yourself, LORD, so that we may return. Renew our days as before,21 LORD, restore us to Yourself, so we may return; renew our days as in former times,
unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us without limit.22unless You have completely rejected us and are intensely angry with us.
