Lamentations 5
ISV Parallel KJV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionKing James Bible
LORD, remember what has happened to us. Pay attention, and look at our shame!1Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, and our homes to foreigners.2Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.
We are now orphans—without fathers— and our mothers are like widows.3We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.
We pay to drink our own water, and our own wood is sold to us at high price.4We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us.
Our pursuers breathe down our necks; we are weary, but there is no rest for us.5Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest.
We made a deal with the Egyptians and the Assyrians for the price of food. 6We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.
Our ancestors sinned and no longer exist yet we continue to bear the consequences of their sin.7Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.
Slaves rule over us, and no one delivers us from their control. 8Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand.
We risk our lives to obtain our food, facing death in the desert.9We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.
Our skin blisters as from an oven, due to ravaging blasts of the famine.10Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine.
They have raped women in Zion, young women in the towns of Judah.11They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah.
Princes they have hung by their hands; elders they have disrespected.12Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured.
Our young men must grind grain with a millstone; our youths stumble under the weight of wood.13They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood.
Our elders have ceased ruling at the gate; our young men have abandoned their music.14The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their musick.
The joy of our hearts has ceased, and our dancing has turned into dirges.15The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.
The crown has fallen from our head— woe to us, because we have sinned!16The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!
This is why our hearts faint, and why our eyes grow dim:17For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.
Because Mount Zion is desolate; foxes roam around it.18Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it.
You, LORD, are forever— your throne endures from generation to generation.19Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation.
So why have you completely forgotten us, forsaking us for so long?20Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time?
Restore us to yourself, LORD, so that we may return. Renew our days as before,21Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.
unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us without limit.22But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very wroth against us.
