"The kingdom from heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 1Ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ
After agreeing to pay the workers one denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing in the marketplace without work.
He told them, 'You go into the vineyard, too, and I will pay you whatever is right.' 4καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ ἐὰν δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν
So off they went. He went out again about noon and about three o'clock and did the same thing.
About five o'clock he went out and found some others standing around. He asked them, 'Why are you standing here all day long without work?' 6Περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί
They told him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He told them, 'You go into the vineyard as well.'7Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ⧼καὶ ἐὰν δίκαιον λήψεσθε⧽
"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his manager, 'Call the workers and give them their wages, beginning with the last and ending with the first.' 8Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ Κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος ‹αὐτοῖς› τὸν μισθόν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων
Those who were hired at five o'clock came, and each received a denarius.9Καὶ* ἐλθόντες οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον
"When the first came, they thought they would receive more, but each received a denarius as well. 10καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖον λήμψονται καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ ἀνὰ δηνάριον καὶ αὐτοί
When they received it, they began to complain to the landowner,
These last fellows worked only one hour, but you paid them the same as us, and we've been working all day, enduring the scorching heat!'12λέγοντες Οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν καὶ ἴσους αὐτοὺς ἡμῖν ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα
"But he told one of them, 'Friend, I'm not treating you unfairly. You did agree with me for a denarius, didn't you? 13 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἑταῖρε οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι
Take what is yours and go. I want to give this last man as much as I gave you.14ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί
I am allowed to do what I want with my own money, am I not? Or are you envious because I'm generous?'15[ἢ] οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι θέλω ποιῆσαι ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι
"In the same way, the last will be first, and the first will be last, because many are called, but few are chosen." 16Οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι ⧼πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοί ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί⧽
When Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and told them as they were walking along, 17‹Καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα ‹μαθητὰς› κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς
"See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the high priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death. 18Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν 〈εἰς〉 θανάτῳ*
Then they will hand him over to unbelievers to be mocked, whipped, and crucified, but on the third day he will be raised."19καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται
Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons. She bowed down in front of him to ask him for a favor.
He asked her, "What do you want?" She told him, "Promise that in your kingdom these two sons of mine will sit on your right and on your left."21 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Τί θέλεις Λέγει αὐτῷ Εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν ‹σου› καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου
Jesus replied, "You don't realize what you're asking. Can you drink from the cup that I'm going to drink from?" They told him, "We can."22Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν ⧼ἢ τὸ βάπτισμα ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθῆναι⧽ Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Δυνάμεθα
He told them, "You will indeed drink from my cup. But it's not up to me to grant you a seat at my right hand or at my left. These positions have already been prepared for others by my Father."23Λέγει αὐτοῖς Τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε ⧼βάπτισμα ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθήσεσθε⧽ τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν τοῦτο δοῦναι ἀλλ’ οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρός μου
When the ten heard this, they became furious with the two brothers.
But Jesus called the disciples and said, "You know that the rulers of the unbelievers lord it over them and their superiors act like tyrants over them. 25 δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν
That's not the way it should be among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, 26οὐχ οὕτως ἔσται* ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος
and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave.
That's the way it is with the Son of Man. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people."28ὥσπερ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν
As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Jesus.29Καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς
When two blind men who were sitting by the roadside heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!" 30καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ
When the crowd told them harshly to be silent, they shouted even louder, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!"31 δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ
Jesus stopped and called them, saying, "What do you want me to do for you?"32Καὶ στὰς Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν Τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν
They told him, "Lord, we want to be able to see!"33Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἵνα ἀνοιγῶσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν
Then Jesus, deeply moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and at once they could see again. So they followed him.34Σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀμμάτων αὐτῶν καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ
