King James BibleEnglish Standard Version
And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.1He entered Jericho and was passing through.
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.2And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.
And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.3And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.
And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.6So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.
And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.7And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.8And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.11As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.12He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.13Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.15When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business.
Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.16The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’
And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.18And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’
And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.19And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:20Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief;
For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.21for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:22He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’
And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.24And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’
(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)25And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’
For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.26‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.27But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”
And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.28And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,29When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples,
Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.30saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.
And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.32So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them.
And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?33And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
And they said, The Lord hath need of him.34And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.35And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.36And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;37As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.38saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.39And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.40He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,41And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,
Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.42saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side
And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,
Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”
And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,47And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him,
And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.48but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.
