Deuteronomy 29
NET Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
These are the words of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb. 1These are the words of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant that he had made with them at Horeb.
Moses proclaimed to all Israel as follows: "You have seen all that the LORD did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, all his servants, and his land.2And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land,
Your eyes have seen the great judgments, those signs and mighty wonders.3the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders.
But to this very day the LORD has not given you an understanding mind, perceptive eyes, or discerning ears!4But to this day the LORD has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.
I have led you through the desert for forty years. Your clothing has not worn out nor have your sandals deteriorated.5I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn off your feet.
You have eaten no bread and drunk no wine or beer--all so that you might know that I am the LORD your God!6You have not eaten bread, and you have not drunk wine or strong drink, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.
When you came to this place King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out to make war and we defeated them.7And when you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out against us to battle, but we defeated them.
Then we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh. 8We took their land and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites.
"Therefore, keep the terms of this covenant and obey them so that you may be successful in everything you do.9Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.
You are standing today, all of you, before the LORD your God--the heads of your tribes, your elders, your officials, every Israelite man,10“You are standing today, all of you, before the LORD your God: the heads of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, all the men of Israel,
your infants, your wives, and the foreigners living in your encampment, those who chop wood and those who carry water--11your little ones, your wives, and the sojourner who is in your camp, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water,
so that you may enter by oath into the covenant the LORD your God is making with you today.12so that you may enter into the sworn covenant of the LORD your God, which the LORD your God is making with you today,
Today he will affirm that you are his people and that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore by oath to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.13that he may establish you today as his people, and that he may be your God, as he promised you, and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
It is not with you alone that I am making this covenant by oath,14It is not with you alone that I am making this sworn covenant,
but with whoever stands with us here today before the LORD our God as well as those not with us here today. 15but with whoever is standing here with us today before the LORD our God, and with whoever is not here with us today.
"(For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we crossed through the nations as we traveled.16“You know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed.
You have seen their detestable things and idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold.)17And you have seen their detestable things, their idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold, which were among them.
Beware that the heart of no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you turns away from the LORD our God today to pursue and serve the gods of those nations; beware that there is among you no root producing poisonous and bitter fruit.18Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit,
When such a person hears the words of this oath he secretly blesses himself and says, "I will have peace though I continue to walk with a stubborn spirit." This will destroy the watered ground with the parched.19one who, when he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.’ This will lead to the sweeping away of moist and dry alike.
The LORD will be unwilling to forgive him, and his intense anger will rage against that man; all the curses written in this scroll will fall upon him and the LORD will obliterate his name from memory.20The LORD will not be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and the curses written in this book will settle upon him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven.
The LORD will single him out for judgment from all the tribes of Israel according to all the curses of the covenant written in this scroll of the law.21And the LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for calamity, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.
The generation to come--your descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigner who will come from distant places--will see the afflictions of that land and the illnesses that the LORD has brought on it.22And the next generation, your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, will say, when they see the afflictions of that land and the sicknesses with which the LORD has made it sick—
The whole land will be covered with brimstone, salt, and burning debris; it will not be planted nor will it sprout or produce grass. It will resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his intense anger.23the whole land burned out with brimstone and salt, nothing sown and nothing growing, where no plant can sprout, an overthrow like that of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and wrath—
Then all the nations will ask, "Why has the LORD done all this to this land? What is this fierce, heated display of anger all about?"24all the nations will say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land? What caused the heat of this great anger?’
Then people will say, "Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.25Then people will say, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,
They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they did not know and that he did not permit them to worship.26and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not known and whom he had not allotted to them.
That is why the LORD's anger erupted against this land, bringing on it all the curses written in this scroll.27Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, bringing upon it all the curses written in this book,
So the LORD has uprooted them from their land in anger, wrath, and great rage and has deported them to another land, as is clear today."28and the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and fury and great wrath, and cast them into another land, as they are this day.’
Secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those that are revealed belong to us and our descendants forever, so that we might obey all the words of this law. 29“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
