Psalm 109

NET BibleInternational Standard Version
For the music director, a psalm of David. O God whom I praise, do not ignore me! 1God, whom I praise, do not be silent,
For they say cruel and deceptive things to me; they lie to me. 2for the mouths of wicked and deceitful people are opened against me; they speak against me with lying tongues.
They surround me and say hateful things; they attack me for no reason. 3They surround me with hate-filled words, attacking me for no reason.
They repay my love with accusations, but I continue to pray. 4Instead of receiving my love, they accuse me, though I continue in prayer.
They repay me evil for good, and hate for love. 5They devise evil against me instead of good, and hatred in place of my love.
Appoint an evil man to testify against him! May an accuser stand at his right side! 6Appoint an evil person over him; may an accuser stand at his right side.
When he is judged, he will be found guilty! Then his prayer will be regarded as sinful. 7When he is judged, may he be found guilty; may his prayer be regarded as sin.
May his days be few! May another take his job! 8May his days be few; may another take over his position.
May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow! 9May his children become fatherless, and his wife a widow.
May his children roam around begging, asking for handouts as they leave their ruined home! 10May his children roam around begging, seeking food while driven far from their ruined homes.
May the creditor seize all he owns! May strangers loot his property! 11May creditors seize all his possessions, and may foreigners loot the property he has acquired.
May no one show him kindness! May no one have compassion on his fatherless children! 12May no one extend gracious love to him, or show favor to his fatherless children.
May his descendants be cut off! May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives! 13May his descendants be eliminated, and their memory be erased from the next generation.
May his ancestors' sins be remembered by the LORD! May his mother's sin not be forgotten! 14May his ancestors' guilt be remembered in the LORD's presence, and may his mother's guilt not be erased.
May the LORD be constantly aware of them, and cut off the memory of his children from the earth! 15May what they have done be continually in the LORD's presence; and may their memory be excised from the earth.
For he never bothered to show kindness; he harassed the oppressed and needy, and killed the disheartened. 16For he didn't think to extend gracious love; he harassed to death the poor, the needy, and the broken hearted.
He loved to curse others, so those curses have come upon him. He had no desire to bless anyone, so he has experienced no blessings. 17He loved to curse—may his curses return upon him! He took no delight in blessing others — so may blessings be far from him.
He made cursing a way of life, so curses poured into his stomach like water and seeped into his bones like oil. 18He wore curses like a garment— may they enter his inner being like water and his bones like oil.
May a curse attach itself to him, like a garment one puts on, or a belt one wears continually! 19May those curses wrap around him like a garment, or like a belt that one always wears.
May the LORD repay my accusers in this way, those who say evil things about me! 20May this be the way the LORD repays my accuser, those who speak evil against me.
O sovereign LORD, intervene on my behalf for the sake of your reputation! Because your loyal love is good, deliver me! 21Now you, LORD my God, defend me for your name's sake; because your gracious love is good, deliver me!
For I am oppressed and needy, and my heart beats violently within me. 22Indeed, I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
I am fading away like a shadow at the end of the day; I am shaken off like a locust. 23I am fading away like a shadow late in the day; I am shaken off like a locust.
I am so starved my knees shake; I have turned into skin and bones. 24My knees give way from fasting, and my skin is lean, deprived of oil.
I am disdained by them. When they see me, they shake their heads. 25I have become an object of derision to them— they shake their heads whenever they see me.
Help me, O LORD my God! Because you are faithful to me, deliver me! 26Help me, LORD my God! Deliver me in accord with your gracious love!
Then they will realize this is your work, and that you, LORD, have accomplished it. 27Then they will realize that your hand is in this— that you, LORD, have accomplished it.
They curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, but your servant will rejoice. 28They will curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, while your servant rejoices.
My accusers will be covered with shame, and draped in humiliation as if it were a robe. 29May my accusers be clothed with shame and wrapped in their humiliation as with a robe.
I will thank the LORD profusely, in the middle of a crowd I will praise him, 30I will give many thanks to the LORD with my mouth, praising him publicly,
because he stands at the right hand of the needy, to deliver him from those who threaten his life. 31for he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to deliver him from his accusers.
