For the music director; according to the tune "Morning Doe;" a psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I groan in prayer, but help seems far away. 1To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up. 2O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
You are holy; you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel. 3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted in you and you rescued them. 4Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
To you they cried out, and they were saved; in you they trusted and they were not disappointed. 5They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
But I am a worm, not a man; people insult me and despise me. 6But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
All who see me taunt me; they mock me and shake their heads. 7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
They say, "Commit yourself to the LORD! Let the LORD rescue him! Let the LORD deliver him, for he delights in him." 8He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
Yes, you are the one who brought me out from the womb and made me feel secure on my mother's breasts. 9But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.
I have been dependent on you since birth; from the time I came out of my mother's womb you have been my God. 10I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
Do not remain far away from me, for trouble is near and I have no one to help me. 11Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
Many bulls surround me; powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in. 12Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
They open their mouths to devour me like a roaring lion that rips its prey. 13They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
My strength drains away like water; all my bones are dislocated; my heart is like wax; it melts away inside me. 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
The roof of my mouth is as dry as a piece of pottery; my tongue sticks to my gums. You set me in the dust of death. 15My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
Yes, wild dogs surround me--a gang of evil men crowd around me; like a lion they pin my hands and feet. 16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones; my enemies are gloating over me in triumph. 17I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
They are dividing up my clothes among themselves; they are rolling dice for my garments. 18They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
But you, O LORD, do not remain far away! You are my source of strength! Hurry and help me! 19But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
Deliver me from the sword! Save my life from the claws of the wild dogs! 20Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
Rescue me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered me! 21Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
I will declare your name to my countrymen! In the middle of the assembly I will praise you! 22I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
You loyal followers of the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him! 23Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
For he did not despise or detest the suffering of the oppressed; he did not ignore him; when he cried out to him, he responded. 24For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
You are the reason I offer praise in the great assembly; I will fulfill my promises before the LORD's loyal followers. 25My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
Let the oppressed eat and be filled! Let those who seek his help praise the LORD! May you live forever! 26The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the LORD and turn to him! Let all the nations worship you! 27All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
For the LORD is king and rules over the nations. 28For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations.
All of the thriving people of the earth will join the celebration and worship; all those who are descending into the grave will bow before him, including those who cannot preserve their lives. 29All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
A whole generation will serve him; they will tell the next generation about the sovereign Lord. 30A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They will come and tell about his saving deeds; they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished. 31They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.
