The word of the LORD came to me:1The word of the LORD came to me:
"As for you, son of man, are you willing to pronounce judgment, are you willing to pronounce judgment on the bloody city? Then confront her with all her abominable deeds!2"Son of man, will you judge her? Will you judge this city of bloodshed? Then confront her with all her detestable practices
Then say, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says: O city, who spills blood within herself (which brings on her doom), and who makes herself idols (which results in impurity),3and say: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: You city that brings on herself doom by shedding blood in her midst and defiles herself by making idols,
you are guilty because of the blood you shed and defiled by the idols you made. You have hastened the day of your doom; the end of your years has come. Therefore I will make you an object of scorn to the nations, an object to be mocked by all lands.4you have become guilty because of the blood you have shed and have become defiled by the idols you have made. You have brought your days to a close, and the end of your years has come. Therefore I will make you an object of scorn to the nations and a laughingstock to all the countries.
Those both near and far from you will mock you, you with your bad reputation, full of turmoil. 5Those who are near and those who are far away will mock you, you infamous city, full of turmoil.
"'See how each of the princes of Israel living within you has used his authority to shed blood.6"'See how each of the princes of Israel who are in you uses his power to shed blood.
They have treated father and mother with contempt within you; they have oppressed the foreigner among you; they have wronged the orphan and the widow within you.7In you they have treated father and mother with contempt; in you they have oppressed the foreigner and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.
You have despised my holy things and desecrated my Sabbaths!8You have despised my holy things and desecrated my Sabbaths.
Slanderous men shed blood within you. Those who live within you eat pagan sacrifices on the mountains; they commit obscene acts among you.9In you are slanderers who are bent on shedding blood; in you are those who eat at the mountain shrines and commit lewd acts.
They have sex with their father's wife within you; they violate women during their menstrual period within you.10In you are those who dishonor their father's bed; in you are those who violate women during their period, when they are ceremonially unclean.
One commits an abominable act with his neighbor's wife; another obscenely defiles his daughter-in-law; another violates his sister--his father's daughter--within you.11In you one man commits a detestable offense with his neighbor's wife, another shamefully defiles his daughter-in-law, and another violates his sister, his own father's daughter.
They take bribes within you to shed blood. You engage in usury and charge interest; you extort money from your neighbors. You have forgotten me, declares the sovereign LORD. 12In you are people who accept bribes to shed blood; you take interest and make a profit from the poor. You extort unjust gain from your neighbors. And you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign LORD.
"'See, I strike my hands together at the dishonest profit you have made, and at the bloodshed they have done among you.13"'I will surely strike my hands together at the unjust gain you have made and at the blood you have shed in your midst.
Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong when I deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it!14Will your courage endure or your hands be strong in the day I deal with you? I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.
I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you among various countries; I will remove your impurity from you.15I will disperse you among the nations and scatter you through the countries; and I will put an end to your uncleanness.
You will be profaned within yourself in the sight of the nations; then you will know that I am the LORD.'" 16When you have been defiled in the eyes of the nations, you will know that I am the LORD.'"
The word of the LORD came to me:17Then the word of the LORD came to me:
"Son of man, the house of Israel has become slag to me. All of them are like bronze, tin, iron, and lead in the furnace; they are the worthless slag of silver.18"Son of man, the people of Israel have become dross to me; all of them are the copper, tin, iron and lead left inside a furnace. They are but the dross of silver.
Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: 'Because all of you have become slag, look out!--I am about to gather you in the middle of Jerusalem.19Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'Because you have all become dross, I will gather you into Jerusalem.
As silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin are gathered in a furnace so that the fire can melt them, so I will gather you in my anger and in my rage. I will deposit you there and melt you.20As silver, copper, iron, lead and tin are gathered into a furnace to be melted with a fiery blast, so will I gather you in my anger and my wrath and put you inside the city and melt you.
I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of my fury, and you will be melted in it.21I will gather you and I will blow on you with my fiery wrath, and you will be melted inside her.
As silver is melted in a furnace, so you will be melted in it, and you will know that I, the LORD, have poured out my anger on you.'" 22As silver is melted in a furnace, so you will be melted inside her, and you will know that I the LORD have poured out my wrath on you.'"
The word of the LORD came to me:23Again the word of the LORD came to me:
"Son of man, say to her: 'You are a land that receives no rain or showers in the day of my anger.'24"Son of man, say to the land, 'You are a land that has not been cleansed or rained on in the day of wrath.'
Her princes within her are like a roaring lion tearing its prey; they have devoured lives. They take away riches and valuable things; they have made many women widows within it.25There is a conspiracy of her princes within her like a roaring lion tearing its prey; they devour people, take treasures and precious things and make many widows within her.
Her priests abuse my law and have desecrated my holy things. They do not distinguish between the holy and the profane, or recognize any distinction between the unclean and the clean. They ignore my Sabbaths and I am profaned in their midst.26Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean; and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.
Her officials are like wolves in her midst rending their prey--shedding blood and destroying lives--so they can get dishonest profit.27Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain.
Her prophets coat their messages with whitewash. They see false visions and announce lying omens for them, saying, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says,' when the LORD has not spoken.28Her prophets whitewash these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations. They say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says'--when the LORD has not spoken.
The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have wronged the poor and needy; they have oppressed the foreigner who lives among them and denied them justice. 29The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the foreigner, denying them justice.
"I looked for a man from among them who would repair the wall and stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land, so that I would not destroy it, but I found no one.30"I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.
So I have poured my anger on them, and destroyed them with the fire of my fury. I hereby repay them for what they have done, declares the sovereign LORD." 31So I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done, declares the Sovereign LORD."
