Concerning Moab: This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Woe to Nebo, for it will be ruined. Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured; the stronghold will be disgraced and shattered.1Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Woe to Nebo, for it will be devastated. Kiriathaim will be captured and disgraced; the fortress will be shattered and dismantled.
Moab will be praised no more; in Heshbon people will plot her downfall: 'Come, let us put an end to that nation.' You, the people of Madmen, will also be silenced; the sword will pursue you.2There is no longer praise for Moab; in Heshbon they devise evil against her: ‘Come, let us cut her off from nationhood.’ You too, O people of Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you.
Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim, cries of great havoc and destruction.3A voice cries out from Horonaim: ‘Devastation and great destruction!’
Moab will be broken; her little ones will cry out.4Moab will be shattered; her little ones will cry out.
They go up the hill to Luhith, weeping bitterly as they go; on the road down to Horonaim anguished cries over the destruction are heard.5For on the ascent to Luhith they weep bitterly as they go, and on the descent to Horonaim cries of distress resound over the destruction:
Flee! Run for your lives; become like a bush in the desert.6‘Flee! Run for your lives! Become like a juniper in the desert.’
Since you trust in your deeds and riches, you too will be taken captive, and Chemosh will go into exile, together with his priests and officials.7Because you trust in your works and treasures, you too will be captured, and Chemosh will go into exile with his priests and officials.
The destroyer will come against every town, and not a town will escape. The valley will be ruined and the plateau destroyed, because the LORD has spoken.8The destroyer will move against every city, and not one town will escape. The valley will also be ruined, and the high plain will be destroyed, as the LORD has said.
Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste; her towns will become desolate, with no one to live in them.9Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste; her cities will become desolate, with no one to dwell in them.
"A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the LORD's work! A curse on anyone who keeps their sword from bloodshed!10Cursed is the one who is remiss in doing the work of the LORD, and cursed is he who withholds his sword from bloodshed.
"Moab has been at rest from youth, like wine left on its dregs, not poured from one jar to another-- she has not gone into exile. So she tastes as she did, and her aroma is unchanged.11Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like wine on its dregs; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his flavor has remained the same, and his aroma is unchanged.
But days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will send men who pour from pitchers, and they will pour her out; they will empty her pitchers and smash her jars.12Therefore behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will send to him wanderers, who will pour him out. They will empty his vessels and shatter his jars.
Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, as Israel was ashamed when they trusted in Bethel.13Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was ashamed when they trusted in Bethel.
"How can you say, 'We are warriors, men valiant in battle'?14How can you say, ‘We are warriors, mighty men ready for battle’?
Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded; her finest young men will go down in the slaughter," declares the King, whose name is the LORD Almighty.15Moab has been destroyed and its towns have been invaded; the best of its young men have gone down in the slaughter, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts.
"The fall of Moab is at hand; her calamity will come quickly.16Moab’s calamity is at hand, and his affliction is rushing swiftly.
Mourn for her, all who live around her, all who know her fame; say, 'How broken is the mighty scepter, how broken the glorious staff!'17Mourn for him, all you who surround him, everyone who knows his name; tell how the mighty scepter is shattered—the glorious staff!
"Come down from your glory and sit on the parched ground, you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon, for the one who destroys Moab will come up against you and ruin your fortified cities.18Come down from your glory; sit on parched ground, O daughter dwelling in Dibon, for the destroyer of Moab has come against you; he has destroyed your fortresses.
Stand by the road and watch, you who live in Aroer. Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping, ask them, 'What has happened?'19Stand by the road and watch, O dweller of Aroer! Ask the man fleeing or the woman escaping, ‘What has happened?’
Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered. Wail and cry out! Announce by the Arnon that Moab is destroyed.20Moab is put to shame, for it has been shattered. Wail and cry out! Declare by the Arnon that Moab is destroyed.
Judgment has come to the plateau-- to Holon, Jahzah and Mephaath,21Judgment has come upon the high plain—upon Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath,
to Dibon, Nebo and Beth Diblathaim,22upon Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim,
to Kiriathaim, Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,23upon Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, and Beth-meon,
to Kerioth and Bozrah-- to all the towns of Moab, far and near.24upon Kerioth, Bozrah, and all the towns of Moab, those far and near.
Moab's horn is cut off; her arm is broken," declares the LORD.25The horn of Moab has been cut off, and his arm is broken,” declares the LORD.
"Make her drunk, for she has defied the LORD. Let Moab wallow in her vomit; let her be an object of ridicule.26“Make him drunk, because he has magnified himself against the LORD; so Moab will wallow in his own vomit, and he will also become a laughingstock.
Was not Israel the object of your ridicule? Was she caught among thieves, that you shake your head in scorn whenever you speak of her?27Was not Israel your object of ridicule? Was he ever found among thieves? For whenever you speak of him you shake your head.
Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks, you who live in Moab. Be like a dove that makes its nest at the mouth of a cave.28Abandon the towns and settle among the rocks, O dwellers of Moab! Be like a dove that nests at the mouth of a cave.
"We have heard of Moab's pride-- how great is her arrogance!-- of her insolence, her pride, her conceit and the haughtiness of her heart.29We have heard of Moab’s pomposity, his exceeding pride and conceit, his proud arrogance and haughtiness of heart.
I know her insolence but it is futile," declares the LORD, "and her boasts accomplish nothing.30I know his insolence,” declares the LORD, “but it is futile. His boasting is as empty as his deeds.
Therefore I wail over Moab, for all Moab I cry out, I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.31Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out for all of Moab; I will moan for the men of Kir-heres.
I weep for you, as Jazer weeps, you vines of Sibmah. Your branches spread as far as the sea; they reached as far as Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your ripened fruit and grapes.32I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah, more than I weep for Jazer. Your tendrils have extended to the sea; they reach even to Jazer. The destroyer has descended on your summer fruit and grape harvest.
Joy and gladness are gone from the orchards and fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy. Although there are shouts, they are not shouts of joy.33Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard and from the fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; their shouts are not for joy.
"The sound of their cry rises from Heshbon to Elealeh and Jahaz, from Zoar as far as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.34There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; they raise their voices to Jahaz, from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim have dried up.
In Moab I will put an end to those who make offerings on the high places and burn incense to their gods," declares the LORD.35In Moab, declares the LORD, I will bring an end to those who make offerings on the high places and burn incense to their gods.
"So my heart laments for Moab like the music of a pipe; it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth. The wealth they acquired is gone.36Therefore My heart laments like a flute for Moab; it laments like a flute for the men of Kir-heres, because the wealth they acquired has perished.
Every head is shaved and every beard cut off; every hand is slashed and every waist is covered with sackcloth.37For every head is shaved and every beard is clipped; on every hand is a gash, and around every waist is sackcloth.
On all the roofs in Moab and in the public squares there is nothing but mourning, for I have broken Moab like a jar that no one wants," declares the LORD.38On all the rooftops of Moab and in the public squares, everyone is mourning; for I have shattered Moab like an unwanted jar,” declares the LORD.
"How shattered she is! How they wail! How Moab turns her back in shame! Moab has become an object of ridicule, an object of horror to all those around her."39“How shattered it is! How they wail! How Moab has turned his back in shame! Moab has become an object of ridicule and horror to all those around him.”
This is what the LORD says: "Look! An eagle is swooping down, spreading its wings over Moab.40For this is what the LORD says: “Behold, an eagle swoops down and spreads his wings against Moab.
Kerioth will be captured and the strongholds taken. In that day the hearts of Moab's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.41Kirioth has been taken, and the strongholds seized. In that day the heart of Moab’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Moab will be destroyed as a nation because she defied the LORD.42Moab will be destroyed as a nation because he vaunted himself against the LORD.
Terror and pit and snare await you, you people of Moab," declares the LORD.43Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of Moab,” declares the LORD.
"Whoever flees from the terror will fall into a pit, whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare; for I will bring on Moab the year of her punishment," declares the LORD.44“Whoever flees the panic will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare. For I will bring upon Moab the year of their punishment,” declares the LORD.
"In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives stand helpless, for a fire has gone out from Heshbon, a blaze from the midst of Sihon; it burns the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of the noisy boasters.45“Those who flee will stand helpless in Heshbon’s shadow, because fire has gone forth from Heshbon and a flame from within Sihon. It devours the foreheads of Moab and the skulls of the sons of tumult.
Woe to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh are destroyed; your sons are taken into exile and your daughters into captivity.46Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh have perished; for your sons have been taken into exile and your daughters have gone into captivity.
"Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in days to come," declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.47Yet in the latter days I will restore Moab from captivity,” declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.
