After the time of Abimelek, a man of Issachar named Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.1After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo became judge and began to deliver Israel. He was from Issachar and lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.
He led Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.2Tola judged Israel twenty-three years and when he died, was buried in Shamir.
He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years.3After him came Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years.
He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.4He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys. They had thirty towns in Gilead, which are still called Jair's Villages today.
When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.5When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.
Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him,6Then the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They worshiped the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines. They abandoned the LORD and did not worship him.
he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,7So the LORD's anger burned against Israel, and he sold them to the Philistines and the Ammonites.
who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.8They shattered and crushed the Israelites that year, and for eighteen years they did the same to all the Israelites who were on the other side of the Jordan in the land of the Amorites in Gilead.
The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim; Israel was in great distress.9The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim. Israel was greatly oppressed,
Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."10so they cried out to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against you. We have abandoned our God and worshiped the Baals."
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,11The LORD said to the Israelites, "When the Egyptians, Amorites, Ammonites, Philistines,
the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?12Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to me, did I not deliver you from them?
But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.13But you have abandoned me and worshiped other gods. Therefore, I will not deliver you again.
Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!"14Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them deliver you whenever you are oppressed."
But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now."15But the Israelites said, "We have sinned. Deal with us as you see fit; only rescue us today!"
Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel's misery no longer.16So they got rid of the foreign gods among them and worshiped the LORD, and he became weary of Israel's misery.
When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.17The Ammonites were called together, and they camped in Gilead. So the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead."18The rulers of Gilead said to one another, "Which man will begin the fight against the Ammonites? He will be the leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead."
