New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
After the time of Abimelek, a man of Issachar named Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.1Now after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.
He led Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.2He judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years.3After him, Jair the Gileadite arose and judged Israel twenty-two years.
He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.4He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities in the land of Gilead that are called Havvoth-jair to this day.
When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.5And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.
Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him,6Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; thus they forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.
he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,7The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.
who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.8They afflicted and crushed the sons of Israel that year; for eighteen years they afflicted all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in Gilead in the land of the Amorites.
The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim; Israel was in great distress.9The sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was greatly distressed.
Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."10Then the sons of Israel cried out to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have forsaken our God and served the Baals."
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,11The LORD said to the sons of Israel, "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines?
the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?12"Also when the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, you cried out to Me, and I delivered you from their hands.
But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.13"Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore I will no longer deliver you.
Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!"14"Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress."
But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now."15The sons of Israel said to the LORD, "We have sinned, do to us whatever seems good to You; only please deliver us this day."
Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel's misery no longer.16So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD; and He could bear the misery of Israel no longer.
When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.17Then the sons of Ammon were summoned and they camped in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together and camped in Mizpah.
The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead."18The people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another, "Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."
