Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there.1Jesus entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a shriveled hand.
Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.2In order to accuse him, they were watching him closely to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath.
Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone."3He told the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand before us."
Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent.4Then he said to them, "Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they were silent.
He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.5After looking around at them with anger, he was grieved at the hardness of their hearts and told the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.
Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.6Immediately the Pharisees went out and started plotting with the Herodians against him, how they might kill him.
Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.7Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a large crowd followed from Galilee, and a large crowd followed from Judea,
When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.8Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and around Tyre and Sidon. The large crowd came to him because they heard about everything he was doing.
Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him.9Then he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, so that the crowd wouldn't crush him.
For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.10Since he had healed many, all who had diseases were pressing toward him to touch him.
Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God."11Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God!"
But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.12And he would strongly warn them not to make him known.
Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.13Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those he wanted, and they came to him.
He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach14He appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, to send them out to preach,
and to have authority to drive out demons.15and to have authority to drive out demons.
These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),16He appointed the Twelve: To Simon, he gave the name Peter;
James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means "sons of thunder"),17and to James the son of Zebedee, and to his brother John, he gave the name "Boanerges" (that is, "Sons of Thunder");
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot18Andrew; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot,
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.19and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.20Jesus entered a house, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat.
When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind."21When his family heard this, they set out to restrain him, because they said, "He's out of his mind."
And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons."22The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul," and, "He drives out demons by the ruler of the demons."
So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan?23So he summoned them and spoke to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan?
If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come.26And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand but is finished.
In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man's house.27But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house.
Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,28"Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for all sins and whatever blasphemies they utter.
but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin."29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin" --
He said this because they were saying, "He has an impure spirit."30because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."
Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.31His mother and his brothers came, and standing outside, they sent word to him and called him.
A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you."32A crowd was sitting around him and told him, "Look, your mother, your brothers, and your sisters are outside asking for you."
"Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked.33He replied to them, "Who are my mother and my brothers?"
Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!34Looking at those sitting in a circle around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!
Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother."35Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."
