New International VersionInternational Standard Version
Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there.1Jesus went into the synagogue again, and a man with a paralyzed hand was there.
Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.2The people watched Jesus closely to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, intending to accuse him of doing something wrong.
Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone."3He told the man with the paralyzed hand, "Come forward."
Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent.4Then he asked them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do evil on Sabbath days, to save a life or to destroy it?" But they remained silent.
He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.5Jesus looked around at them in anger, deeply hurt because of their hard hearts. Then he told the man, "Hold out your hand." The man held it out, and his hand was restored to health.
Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.6Immediately the Pharisees and Herodians went out and began to plot how to kill him.
Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.7So Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea. A large crowd from Galilee, Judea,
When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.8Jerusalem, Idumea, from across the Jordan, and from the region around Tyre and Sidon followed him. They came to him because they kept hearing about everything he was doing.
Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him.9Jesus told his disciples to have a boat ready for him so that the crowd wouldn't crush him,
For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.10because he had healed so many people that everyone who had diseases kept crowding up against him in order to touch him.
Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God."11Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they would fall down in front of him and scream, "You are the Son of God!"
But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.12But he sternly ordered them again and again not to tell people who he was.
Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.13Then Jesus went up on a hillside and called to himself those whom he had decided on, and they approached him.
He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach14He appointed the Twelve, whom he called apostles, to accompany him, to be sent out to preach,
and to have authority to drive out demons.15and to have the authority to drive out demons.
These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),16He appointed the Twelve: Simon (whom he named Peter),
James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means "sons of thunder"),17Zebedee's sons James and his brother John (whom he named Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder),
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddeus, Simon the Cananaean,
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.19and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.20Then he went home. Such a large crowd gathered again that Jesus and his disciples couldn't even eat.
When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind."21When his family heard about it, they went to restrain him, because they kept saying, "He's out of his mind!"
And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons."22The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem kept repeating, "He has Beelzebul," and, "He drives out demons by the ruler of demons."
So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan?23So Jesus called them together and began to speak to them in parables. "How can Satan drive out Satan?
If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.25And if a household is divided against itself, that household won't stand.
And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come.26So if Satan rebels against himself and is divided, he cannot stand. Indeed, his end has come.
In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man's house.27No one can go into a strong man's house and carry off his possessions without first tying up the strong man. Then he can ransack his house.
Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,28I tell all of you with certainty, people will be forgiven their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter.
but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin."29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never be forgiven, but is guilty of eternal sin."
He said this because they were saying, "He has an impure spirit."30…because they had been saying, "He has an unclean spirit."
Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.31Then his mother and his brothers arrived. Milling around outside, they sent for him, continuously summoning him.
A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you."32A crowd was sitting around him. They told him, "Look! Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you."
"Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked.33He answered them, "Who are my mother and my brothers?"
Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!34Then looking at the people sitting around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!
Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother."35Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."
