"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.1Ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ
He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.2συμφωνήσας δὲ μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν ἐκ δηναρίου τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ
"About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.3Καὶ ἐξελθὼν περὶ τρίτην ὥραν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς
He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.'4καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ ἐὰν δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν
So they went. "He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.5οἱ δὲ ἀπῆλθον Πάλιν δὲ ἐξελθὼν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐνάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως
About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?'6Περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί
"'Because no one has hired us,' they answered. "He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.'7Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ⧼καὶ ἐὰν δίκαιον λήψεσθε⧽
"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.'8Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ Κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος ‹αὐτοῖς› τὸν μισθόν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων
"The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.9Καὶ* ἐλθόντες οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον
So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.10καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖον λήμψονται καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ ἀνὰ δηνάριον καὶ αὐτοί
When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.11Λαβόντες δὲ ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου
These who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'12λέγοντες Οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν καὶ ἴσους αὐτοὺς ἡμῖν ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα
"But he answered one of them, 'I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?13 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἑταῖρε οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι
Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.14ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί
Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'15[ἢ] οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι θέλω ποιῆσαι ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι
"So the last will be first, and the first will be last."16Οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι ⧼πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοί ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί⧽
Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them,17‹Καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα ‹μαθητὰς› κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς
"We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death18Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν 〈εἰς〉 θανάτῳ*
and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!"19καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται
Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.20Τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ
"What is it you want?" he asked. She said, "Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom."21 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Τί θέλεις Λέγει αὐτῷ Εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν ‹σου› καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου
"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said to them. "Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?" "We can," they answered.22Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν ⧼ἢ τὸ βάπτισμα ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθῆναι⧽ Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Δυνάμεθα
Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father."23Λέγει αὐτοῖς Τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε ⧼βάπτισμα ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθήσεσθε⧽ τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν τοῦτο δοῦναι ἀλλ’ οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρός μου
When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.24Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἠγανάκτησαν περὶ τῶν δύο ἀδελφῶν
Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.25 δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,26οὐχ οὕτως ἔσται* ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος
and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--27καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔσται ὑμῶν δοῦλος
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."28ὥσπερ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν
As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.29Καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς
Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"30καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ
The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"31 δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραξαν λέγοντες Κύριε «ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς» υἱὸς Δαυίδ
Jesus stopped and called them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.32Καὶ στὰς Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν Τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν
"Lord," they answered, "we want our sight."33Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἵνα ἀνοιγῶσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν
Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.34Σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀμμάτων αὐτῶν καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ
