Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.1And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.2And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd.3And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.4And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today."5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.6And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner."7And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."8And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.9And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.11And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return.12He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.'13And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
"But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.'14But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
"He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.15And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
"The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.'16Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
"'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.'17And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
"The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.'18And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
"His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.'19And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
"Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.20And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.'21For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
"His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?22And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'23Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.'24And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
"'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!'25(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
"He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.26For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me.'"27But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,29And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
"Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.30Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' say, 'The Lord needs it.'"31And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.32And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"33And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
They replied, "The Lord needs it."34And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.35And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.36And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:37And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"38Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!"39And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
"I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out."40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it41And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes.42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.43For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you."44And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling.45And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;
"It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be a house of prayer'; but you have made it 'a den of robbers.'"46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.47And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.48And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
