New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.1Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.
He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.2And He was saying to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.3"Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.4"Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way.
"When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.'5"Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.'
If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.6"If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.7"Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house.
"When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.8"Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you;
Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'9and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'
But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say,10"But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say,
Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.'11Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.'
I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.12"I say to you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.13"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.14"But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.
And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.15"And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades!
"Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me."16"The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me."
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."17The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name."
He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.18And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.
I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.19"Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.
However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."20"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven."
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.21At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."22"All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."
Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.23Turning to the disciples, He said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see,
For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it."24for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them."
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"25And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"26And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?"
He answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"27And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."28And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE."
But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"29But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.30Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.
A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.31"And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.32"Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.33"But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.34and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'35"On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.'
"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"36"Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?"
The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."37And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.38Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.39She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word.
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"40But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me."
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things,41But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things;
but few things are needed--or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."42but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."
