A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.1A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart!
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.2But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling, My steps had almost slipped.
For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.3For I was envious of the arrogant As I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.4For there are no pains in their death, And their body is fat.
They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.5They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like mankind.
Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.6Therefore pride is their necklace; The garment of violence covers them.
From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.7Their eye bulges from fatness; The imaginations of their heart run riot.
They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.8They mock and wickedly speak of oppression; They speak from on high.
Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.9They have set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue parades through the earth.
Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.10Therefore his people return to this place, And waters of abundance are drunk by them.
They say, "How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?"11They say, "How does God know? And is there knowledge with the Most High?"
This is what the wicked are like-- always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.12Behold, these are the wicked; And always at ease, they have increased in wealth.
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.13Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure And washed my hands in innocence;
All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.14For I have been stricken all day long And chastened every morning.
If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.15If I had said, "I will speak thus," Behold, I would have betrayed the generation of Your children.
When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply16When I pondered to understand this, It was troublesome in my sight
till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.17Until I came into the sanctuary of God; Then I perceived their end.
Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.18Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction.
How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!19How they are destroyed in a moment! They are utterly swept away by sudden terrors!
They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.20Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when aroused, You will despise their form.
When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,21When my heart was embittered And I was pierced within,
I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.22Then I was senseless and ignorant; I was like a beast before You.
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.23Nevertheless I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.24With Your counsel You will guide me, And afterward receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.25Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.26My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.27For, behold, those who are far from You will perish; You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You.
But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.28But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, That I may tell of all Your works.
