These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.1These are the words of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.
Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land.2Moses proclaimed to all Israel as follows: "You have seen all that the LORD did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, all his servants, and his land.
With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders.3Your eyes have seen the great judgments, those signs and mighty wonders.
But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear.4But to this very day the LORD has not given you an understanding mind, perceptive eyes, or discerning ears!
Yet the LORD says, "During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.5I have led you through the desert for forty years. Your clothing has not worn out nor have your sandals deteriorated.
You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the LORD your God."6You have eaten no bread and drunk no wine or beer--all so that you might know that I am the LORD your God!
When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them.7When you came to this place King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out to make war and we defeated them.
We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.8Then we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh.
Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.9"Therefore, keep the terms of this covenant and obey them so that you may be successful in everything you do.
All of you are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God--your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel,10You are standing today, all of you, before the LORD your God--the heads of your tribes, your elders, your officials, every Israelite man,
together with your children and your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water.11your infants, your wives, and the foreigners living in your encampment, those who chop wood and those who carry water--
You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God, a covenant the LORD is making with you this day and sealing with an oath,12so that you may enter by oath into the covenant the LORD your God is making with you today.
to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.13Today he will affirm that you are his people and that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore by oath to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you14It is not with you alone that I am making this covenant by oath,
who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today.15but with whoever stands with us here today before the LORD our God as well as those not with us here today.
You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here.16"(For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we crossed through the nations as we traveled.
You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold.17You have seen their detestable things and idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold.)
Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.18Beware that the heart of no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you turns away from the LORD our God today to pursue and serve the gods of those nations; beware that there is among you no root producing poisonous and bitter fruit.
When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing on themselves, thinking, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way," they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.19When such a person hears the words of this oath he secretly blesses himself and says, "I will have peace though I continue to walk with a stubborn spirit." This will destroy the watered ground with the parched.
The LORD will never be willing to forgive them; his wrath and zeal will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the LORD will blot out their names from under heaven.20The LORD will be unwilling to forgive him, and his intense anger will rage against that man; all the curses written in this scroll will fall upon him and the LORD will obliterate his name from memory.
The LORD will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.21The LORD will single him out for judgment from all the tribes of Israel according to all the curses of the covenant written in this scroll of the law.
Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it.22The generation to come--your descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigner who will come from distant places--will see the afflictions of that land and the illnesses that the LORD has brought on it.
The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur--nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger.23The whole land will be covered with brimstone, salt, and burning debris; it will not be planted nor will it sprout or produce grass. It will resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his intense anger.
All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?"24Then all the nations will ask, "Why has the LORD done all this to this land? What is this fierce, heated display of anger all about?"
And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.25Then people will say, "Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them.26They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they did not know and that he did not permit them to worship.
Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.27That is why the LORD's anger erupted against this land, bringing on it all the curses written in this scroll.
In furious anger and in great wrath the LORD uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now."28So the LORD has uprooted them from their land in anger, wrath, and great rage and has deported them to another land, as is clear today."
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.29Secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those that are revealed belong to us and our descendants forever, so that we might obey all the words of this law.
