| 1And the LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai: " |
| 2“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to the LORD. | 2Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you enter the land I am giving you, the land will observe a Sabbath to the LORD. |
| 3Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit; | 3You may sow your field for six years, and you may prune your vineyard and gather its produce for six years. |
| 4but in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath to the LORD. You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. | 4But there will be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land in the seventh year, a Sabbath to the LORD: you are not to sow your field or prune your vineyard. |
| 5What grows of its own accord of your harvest you shall not reap, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine, for it is a year of rest for the land. | 5You are not to reap what grows by itself from your crop, or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. It must be a year of complete rest for the land. |
| 6And the sabbath produce of the land shall be food for you: for you, your male and female servants, your hired man, and the stranger who dwells with you, | 6Whatever the land produces during the Sabbath year can be food for you--for yourself, your male or female slave, and the hired hand or foreigner who stays with you. |
| 7for your livestock and the beasts that are in your land—all its produce shall be for food. | 7All of its growth may serve as food for your livestock and the wild animals in your land." |
| 8‘And you shall count seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years; and the time of the seven sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years. | 8You are to count seven sabbatical years, seven times seven years, so that the time period of the seven sabbatical years amounts to 49. |
| 9Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land. | 9Then you are to sound a trumpet loudly in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month; you will sound it throughout your land on the Day of Atonement. |
| 10And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family. | 10You are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom in the land for all its inhabitants. It will be your Jubilee, when each of you is to return to his property and each of you to his clan. |
| 11That fiftieth year shall be a Jubilee to you; in it you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of its own accord, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine. | 11The fiftieth year will be your Jubilee; you are not to sow, reap what grows by itself, or harvest its untended vines. |

| 13‘In this Year of Jubilee, each of you shall return to his possession. | 13In this Year of Jubilee, each of you will return to his property. |
| 14And if you sell anything to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor’s hand, you shall not oppress one another. | 14If you make a sale to your neighbor or a purchase from him, do not cheat one another. |
| 15According to the number of years after the Jubilee you shall buy from your neighbor, and according to the number of years of crops he shall sell to you. | 15You are to make the purchase from your neighbor based on the number of years since the last Jubilee. He is to sell to you based on the number of remaining harvest years. |
| 16According to the multitude of years you shall increase its price, and according to the fewer number of years you shall diminish its price; for he sells to you according to the number of the years of the crops. | 16You are to increase its price in proportion to a greater amount of years, and decrease its price in proportion to a lesser amount of years, because what he is selling to you is a number of harvests. |
| 17Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God. | 17You are not to cheat one another, but fear your God, for I am Yahweh your God." |
| 18‘So you shall observe My statutes and keep My judgments, and perform them; and you will dwell in the land in safety. | 18You are to keep My statutes and ordinances and carefully observe them, so that you may live securely in the land. |
| 19Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill, and dwell there in safety. | 19Then the land will yield its fruit, so that you can eat, be satisfied, and live securely in the land. |
| 20‘And if you say, “What shall we eat in the seventh year, since we shall not sow nor gather in our produce?” | 20If you wonder: 'What will we eat in the seventh year if we don't sow or gather our produce?' |
| 21Then I will command My blessing on you in the sixth year, and it will bring forth produce enough for three years. | 21I will appoint My blessing for you in the sixth year, so that it will produce a crop sufficient for three years. |
| 22And you shall sow in the eighth year, and eat old produce until the ninth year; until its produce comes in, you shall eat of the old harvest. | 22When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating from the previous harvest. You will be eating this until the ninth year when its harvest comes in." |
| 23‘The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with Me. | 23The land is not to be permanently sold because it is Mine, and you are only foreigners and temporary residents on My land. |
| 24And in all the land of your possession you shall grant redemption of the land. | 24You are to allow the redemption of any land you occupy. |
| 25‘If one of your brethren becomes poor, and has sold some of his possession, and if his redeeming relative comes to redeem it, then he may redeem what his brother sold. | 25If your brother becomes destitute and sells part of his property, his nearest relative may come and redeem what his brother has sold. |
| 26Or if the man has no one to redeem it, but he himself becomes able to redeem it, | 26If a man has no family redeemer, but he prospers and obtains enough to redeem his land, |
| 27then let him count the years since its sale, and restore the remainder to the man to whom he sold it, that he may return to his possession. | 27he may calculate the years since its sale, repay the balance to the man he sold it to, and return to his property. |
| 28But if he is not able to have it restored to himself, then what was sold shall remain in the hand of him who bought it until the Year of Jubilee; and in the Jubilee it shall be released, and he shall return to his possession. | 28But if he cannot obtain enough to repay him, what he sold will remain in the possession of its purchaser until the Year of Jubilee. It is to be released at the Jubilee, so that he may return to his property." |
| 29‘If a man sells a house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year he may redeem it. | 29If a man sells a residence in a walled city, his right of redemption will last until a year has passed after its sale; his right of redemption will last a year. |
| 30But if it is not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to him who bought it, throughout his generations. It shall not be released in the Jubilee. | 30If it is not redeemed by the end of a full year, then the house in the walled city is permanently transferred to its purchaser throughout his generations. It is not to be released on the Jubilee. |
| 31However the houses of villages which have no wall around them shall be counted as the fields of the country. They may be redeemed, and they shall be released in the Jubilee. | 31But houses in villages that have no walls around them are to be classified as open fields. The right to redeem such houses stays in effect, and they are to be released at the Jubilee." |
| 32Nevertheless the cities of the Levites, and the houses in the cities of their possession, the Levites may redeem at any time. | 32Concerning the Levitical cities, the Levites always have the right to redeem houses in the cities they possess. |
| 33And if a man purchases a house from the Levites, then the house that was sold in the city of his possession shall be released in the Jubilee; for the houses in the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel. | 33Whatever property one of the Levites can redeem--a house sold in a city they possess--must be released at the Jubilee, because the houses in the Levitical cities are their possession among the Israelites. |
| 34But the field of the common-land of their cities may not be sold, for it is their perpetual possession. | 34The open pastureland around their cities may not be sold, for it is their permanent possession." |
| 35‘If one of your brethren becomes poor, and falls into poverty among you, then you shall help him, like a stranger or a sojourner, that he may live with you. | 35If your brother becomes destitute and cannot sustain himself among you, you are to support him as a foreigner or temporary resident, so that he can continue to live among you. |
| 36Take no usury or interest from him; but fear your God, that your brother may live with you. | 36Do not profit or take interest from him, but fear your God and let your brother live among you. |
| 37You shall not lend him your money for usury, nor lend him your food at a profit. | 37You are not to lend him your silver with interest or sell him your food for profit. |
| 38I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God. | 38I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God." |
| 39‘And if one of your brethren who dwells by you becomes poor, and sells himself to you, you shall not compel him to serve as a slave. | 39If your brother among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, you must not force him to do slave labor. |
| 40As a hired servant and a sojourner he shall be with you, and shall serve you until the Year of Jubilee. | 40Let him stay with you as a hired hand or temporary resident; he may work for you until the Year of Jubilee. |
| 41And then he shall depart from you—he and his children with him—and shall return to his own family. He shall return to the possession of his fathers. | 41Then he and his children are to be released from you, and he may return to his clan and his ancestral property. |
| 42For they are My servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves. | 42They are not to be sold as slaves, because they are My slaves that I brought out of the land of Egypt. |
| 43You shall not rule over him with rigor, but you shall fear your God. | 43You are not to rule over them harshly but fear your God. |
| 44And as for your male and female slaves whom you may have—from the nations that are around you, from them you may buy male and female slaves. | 44Your male and female slaves are to be from the nations around you; you may purchase male and female slaves. |
| 45Moreover you may buy the children of the strangers who dwell among you, and their families who are with you, which they beget in your land; and they shall become your property. | 45You may also purchase them from the foreigners staying with you, or from their families living among you--those born in your land. These may become your property. |
| 46And you may take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them as a possession; they shall be your permanent slaves. But regarding your brethren, the children of Israel, you shall not rule over one another with rigor. | 46You may leave them to your sons after you to inherit as property; you can make them slaves for life. But concerning your brothers, the Israelites, you must not rule over one another harshly." |
| 47‘Now if a sojourner or stranger close to you becomes rich, and one of your brethren who dwells by him becomes poor, and sells himself to the stranger or sojourner close to you, or to a member of the stranger’s family, | 47If a foreigner or temporary resident living among you prospers, but your brother living near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the foreigner living among you, or to a member of the foreigner's clan, |
| 48after he is sold he may be redeemed again. One of his brothers may redeem him; | 48he has the right of redemption after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him. |
| 49or his uncle or his uncle’s son may redeem him; or anyone who is near of kin to him in his family may redeem him; or if he is able he may redeem himself. | 49His uncle or cousin may redeem him, or any of his close relatives from his clan may redeem him. If he prospers, he may redeem himself. |
| 50Thus he shall reckon with him who bought him: The price of his release shall be according to the number of years, from the year that he was sold to him until the Year of Jubilee; it shall be according to the time of a hired servant for him. | 50The one who purchased him is to calculate the time from the year he sold himself to him until the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale will be determined by the number of years. It will be set for him like the daily wages of a hired hand. |
| 51If there are still many years remaining, according to them he shall repay the price of his redemption from the money with which he was bought. | 51If many years are still left, he must pay his redemption price in proportion to them based on his purchase price. |
| 52And if there remain but a few years until the Year of Jubilee, then he shall reckon with him, and according to his years he shall repay him the price of his redemption. | 52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, he will calculate and pay the price of his redemption in proportion to his remaining years. |
| 53He shall be with him as a yearly hired servant, and he shall not rule with rigor over him in your sight. | 53He will stay with him like a man hired year by year. A foreign owner is not to rule over him harshly in your sight. |
| 54And if he is not redeemed in these years, then he shall be released in the Year of Jubilee—he and his children with him. | 54If he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children are to be released at the Year of Jubilee. |
| 55For the children of Israel are servants to Me; they are My servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. | 55For the Israelites are My slaves. They are My slaves that I brought out of the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh your God." |
