Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town.1He entered Jericho and was passing through.
There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich.2There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd.3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.4So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since he was about to pass that way.
When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today it is necessary for me to stay at your house.”
Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy.6So he quickly came down and welcomed him joyfully.
But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.7All who saw it began to complain, “He’s gone to stay with a sinful man.”
Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”8But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord. And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much.”
Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham.9“Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Parable of the Ten Servants10For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.11As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem, and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away.
He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return.12Therefore he said: “A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then to return.
Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’13He called ten of his servants, gave them ten minas, and told them, ‘Engage in business until I come back.’
But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’14“But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We don’t want this man to rule over us.’
“After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were.15“At his return, having received the authority to be king, he summoned those servants he had given the money to, so that he could find out how much they had made in business.
The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’16The first came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten more minas.’
“‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’17“ ‘Well done, good servant! ’ he told him. ‘Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, have authority over ten towns.’
“The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’18“The second came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’
“‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’19“So he said to him, ‘You will be over five towns.’
“But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.20“And another came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina. I have kept it safe in a cloth
I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’21because I was afraid of you since you’re a harsh man: you collect what you didn’t deposit and reap what you didn’t sow.’
“‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant,22“He told him, ‘I will condemn you by what you have said, you evil servant! If you knew I was a harsh man, collecting what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow,
why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’23why, then, didn’t you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have collected it with interest.’
“Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’24So he said to those standing there, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
“‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’25“But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’
“‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.26“ ‘I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away.
And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’” Jesus’ Triumphant Entry27But bring here these enemies of mine, who did not want me to rule over them, and slaughter them in my presence.’ ”
After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples.28When he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead.29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples
“Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.30and said, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.
If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it? ’ say this: ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”
So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said.32So those who were sent left and found it just as he had told them.
And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”33As they were untying the young donkey, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the donkey? ”
And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.”34“The Lord needs it,” they said.
So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on.35Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their clothes on the donkey, they helped Jesus get on it.
As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him.36As he was going along, they were spreading their clothes on the road.
When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.37Now he came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:
“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”38Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven!
But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”39Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem40He answered, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”
But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.41As he approached and saw the city, he wept for it,
“How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.42saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace --but now it is hidden from your eyes.
Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side.43For the days will come on you when your enemies will build a barricade around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.
They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you. ” Jesus Clears the Temple44They will crush you and your children among you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in your midst, because you did not recognize the time when God visited you.”
Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices.45He went into the temple and began to throw out those who were selling,
He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”46and he said, “It is written, my house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves! ”
After that, he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him.47Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to kill him,
But they could think of nothing, because all the people hung on every word he said.48but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard.
