Psalm 88
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.1O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you.
Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.2Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry!
For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.3For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.4I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength,
They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.5like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand.
You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.6You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep.
Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude7Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah
You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.8You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy.9my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you.
Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude10Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?11Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?12Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.13But I, O LORD, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?14O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me?
I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.15Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.16Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me.
They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.17They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together.
You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.18You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness.
