Psalm 88
NLT Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNew International Version
O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.1A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. LORD, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you.
Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.2May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.
For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.3I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death.
I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.4I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.
They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.5I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care.
You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.6You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.
Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude7Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.
You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.8You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;
My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy.9my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.
Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude10Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?11Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction?
Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?12Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.13But I cry to you for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?14Why, LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me?
I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.15From my youth I have suffered and been close to death; I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.16Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.
They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.17All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me.
You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.18You have taken from me friend and neighbor-- darkness is my closest friend.
