Psalm 88
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.1LORD, God of my salvation, by day and by night I cry out before you.
Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.2Let my prayer come before you; listen to my cry.
For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.3For my life is filled with troubles as I approach Sheol.
I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.4I am considered as one of those descending into the Pit, like a mighty man without strength,
They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.5released to remain with the dead, lying in a grave like a corpse, remembered no longer, and cut off from your power.
You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.6You have assigned me to the lowest part of the Pit, to the darkest depths.
Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude7Your anger lies heavily upon me; you pound me with all your waves. Interlude
You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.8You caused my acquaintances to shun me; you make me extremely abhorrent to them. Restrained, I am unable to go out.
My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy.9My eyes languish on account of my affliction; all day long I call out to you, LORD, I spread out my hands to you.
Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude10Can you perform wonders for the dead? Can departed spirits stand up to praise you? Interlude
Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?11Can your gracious love be declared in the grave or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?12Can your awesome deeds be known in darkness or your righteousness in the land of oblivion?
O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.13As for me, I cry out to you LORD, and in the morning my prayer greets you.
O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?14Why, LORD, have you rejected me? Why have you hidden your face from me?
I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.15Since my youth I have been oppressed and in danger of death. I bear your dread and am overwhelmed.
Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.16Your burning anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me.
They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.17Like waters, they engulf me all day long; they surround me on all sides.
You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.18You caused my friend and neighbor to shun me; and my acquaintances are confused.
