Jesus also told them other parables. He said,1Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς πάλιν εἶπεν ἐν παραβολαῖς αὐτοῖς λέγων
“The Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a king who prepared a great wedding feast for his son.2Ὡμοιώθη βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ βασιλεῖ ὅστις ἐποίησεν γάμους τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ
When the banquet was ready, he sent his servants to notify those who were invited. But they all refused to come!3καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ καλέσαι τοὺς κεκλημένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ οὐκ ἤθελον ἐλθεῖν
“So he sent other servants to tell them, ‘The feast has been prepared. The bulls and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the banquet!’4Πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους λέγων Εἴπατε τοῖς κεκλημένοις Ἰδοὺ τὸ ἄριστόν μου ἡτοίμακα οἱ ταῦροί μου καὶ τὰ σιτιστὰ τεθυμένα καὶ πάντα ἕτοιμα δεῦτε εἰς τοὺς γάμους
But the guests he had invited ignored them and went their own way, one to his farm, another to his business.5Οἱ δὲ ἀμελήσαντες ἀπῆλθον ὃς μὲν εἰς τὸν ἴδιον ἀγρόν ὃς δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν ἐμπορίαν αὐτοῦ
Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them.6οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ κρατήσαντες τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὕβρισαν καὶ ἀπέκτειναν
“The king was furious, and he sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn their town.7 δὲ βασιλεὺς ὠργίσθη καὶ πέμψας τὰ στρατεύματα αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεσεν τοὺς φονεῖς ἐκείνους καὶ τὴν πόλιν αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησεν
And he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, and the guests I invited aren’t worthy of the honor.8τότε λέγει τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ μὲν γάμος ἕτοιμός ἐστιν οἱ δὲ κεκλημένοι οὐκ ἦσαν ἄξιοι
Now go out to the street corners and invite everyone you see.’9πορεύεσθε οὖν ἐπὶ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὁδῶν καὶ ὅσους ἐὰν εὕρητε καλέσατε εἰς τοὺς γάμους
So the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests.10Καὶ ἐξελθόντες οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς συνήγαγον πάντας οὓς εὗρον πονηρούς τε καὶ ἀγαθούς καὶ ἐπλήσθη γάμος* ἀνακειμένων
“But when the king came in to meet the guests, he noticed a man who wasn’t wearing the proper clothes for a wedding.11Εἰσελθὼν δὲ βασιλεὺς θεάσασθαι τοὺς ἀνακειμένους εἶδεν ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐνδεδυμένον ἔνδυμα γάμου
‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how is it that you are here without wedding clothes?’ But the man had no reply.12καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἑταῖρε πῶς εἰσῆλθες ὧδε μὴ ἔχων ἔνδυμα γάμου δὲ ἐφιμώθη
Then the king said to his aides, ‘Bind his hands and feet and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’13Τότε βασιλεὺς εἶπεν τοῖς διακόνοις Δήσαντες αὐτοῦ πόδας καὶ χεῖρας ἐκβάλετε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον ἐκεῖ ἔσται κλαυθμὸς καὶ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων
“For many are called, but few are chosen.” Taxes for Caesar14Πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοὶ ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί
Then the Pharisees met together to plot how to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested.15Τότε πορευθέντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον ὅπως αὐτὸν παγιδεύσωσιν ἐν λόγῳ
They sent some of their disciples, along with the supporters of Herod, to meet with him. “Teacher,” they said, “we know how honest you are. You teach the way of God truthfully. You are impartial and don’t play favorites.16καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῶν μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν λέγοντες* Διδάσκαλε οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς εἶ καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ μέλει σοι περὶ οὐδενός οὐ γὰρ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων
Now tell us what you think about this: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”17εἰπὸν οὖν ἡμῖν τί σοι δοκεῖ ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι οὔ
But Jesus knew their evil motives. “You hypocrites!” he said. “Why are you trying to trap me?18Γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πονηρίαν αὐτῶν εἶπεν Τί με πειράζετε ὑποκριταί
Here, show me the coin used for the tax.” When they handed him a Roman coin,19ἐπιδείξατέ μοι τὸ νόμισμα τοῦ κήνσου Οἱ δὲ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δηνάριον
he asked, “Whose picture and title are stamped on it?”20Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τίνος εἰκὼν αὕτη καὶ ἐπιγραφή
“Caesar’s,” they replied. “Well, then,” he said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”21Λέγουσιν ‹αὐτῷ› Καίσαρος Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τῷ Θεῷ
His reply amazed them, and they went away. Discussion about Resurrection22Καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἀπῆλθαν
That same day Jesus was approached by some Sadducees—religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question:23Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Σαδδουκαῖοι λέγοντες μὴ εἶναι ἀνάστασιν καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν
“Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies without children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother’s name.’24λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε Μωϋσῆς εἶπεν Ἐάν τις ἀποθάνῃ μὴ ἔχων τέκνα ἐπιγαμβρεύσει ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναστήσει σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ
Well, suppose there were seven brothers. The oldest one married and then died without children, so his brother married the widow.25ἦσαν δὲ παρ’ ἡμῖν ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοί καὶ πρῶτος γήμας ἐτελεύτησεν καὶ μὴ ἔχων σπέρμα ἀφῆκεν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ
But the second brother also died, and the third brother married her. This continued with all seven of them.26ὁμοίως καὶ δεύτερος καὶ τρίτος ἕως τῶν ἑπτά
Last of all, the woman also died.27ὕστερον δὲ πάντων ἀπέθανεν γυνή
So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection? For all seven were married to her.”28ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει οὖν τίνος τῶν ἑπτὰ ἔσται γυνή πάντες γὰρ ἔσχον αὐτήν
Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.29Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πλανᾶσθε μὴ εἰδότες τὰς γραφὰς μηδὲ τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ Θεοῦ
For when the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. In this respect they will be like the angels in heaven.30ἐν γὰρ τῇ ἀναστάσει οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε γαμίζονται ἀλλ’ ὡς ἄγγελοι ‹θεοῦ› ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ εἰσιν
“But now, as to whether there will be a resurrection of the dead—haven’t you ever read about this in the Scriptures? Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said,31περὶ δὲ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῶν νεκρῶν οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑμῖν ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ λέγοντος
‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ So he is the God of the living, not the dead.”32Ἐγώ εἰμι Θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Θεὸς Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Θεὸς Ἰακώβ οὐκ ἔστιν Θεὸς νεκρῶν ἀλλὰ ζώντων
When the crowds heard him, they were astounded at his teaching. The Most Important Commandment33Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again.34Οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἐφίμωσεν τοὺς Σαδδουκαίους συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό
One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question:35καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν νομικὸς πειράζων αὐτόν
“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”36Διδάσκαλε ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ
Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’37 δὲ ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου
This is the first and greatest commandment.38αὕτη ἐστὶν μεγάλη καὶ πρώτη ἐντολή
A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’39δευτέρα ‹δὲ› ὁμοία αὐτῇ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν
The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Whose Son Is the Messiah?40ἐν ταύταις ταῖς δυσὶν ἐντολαῖς ὅλος νόμος κρέμαται καὶ οἱ προφῆται
Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question:41Συνηγμένων δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς
“What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They replied, “He is the son of David.”42λέγων Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ τίνος υἱός ἐστιν Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Τοῦ Δαυίδ
Jesus responded, “Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah ‘my Lord’? For David said,43Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πῶς οὖν Δαυὶδ ἐν Πνεύματι καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον λέγων
‘The LORD said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’44Εἶπεν Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου Ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου Ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν σου
Since David called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”45Εἰ οὖν Δαυὶδ καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστιν
No one could answer him. And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.46Καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδύνατο ἀποκριθῆναι αὐτῷ λόγον οὐδὲ ἐτόλμησέν τις ἀπ’ ἐκείνης τῆς ἡμέρας ἐπερωτῆσαι αὐτὸν οὐκέτι
