About this time another large crowd had gathered, and the people ran out of food again. Jesus called his disciples and told them,1During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
“I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat.2"I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way. For some of them have come a long distance.”3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance."
His disciples replied, “How are we supposed to find enough food to feed them out here in the wilderness?”4His disciples answered, "But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?"
Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?” “Seven loaves,” they replied.5"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied.
So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to his disciples, who distributed the bread to the crowd.6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so.
A few small fish were found, too, so Jesus also blessed these and told the disciples to distribute them.7They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.
They ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food.8The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
There were about 4,000 men in the crowd that day, and Jesus sent them home after they had eaten.9About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away,
Immediately after this, he got into a boat with his disciples and crossed over to the region of Dalmanutha. Pharisees Demand a Miraculous Sign10he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came and started to argue with him. Testing him, they demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.11The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.
When he heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why do these people keep demanding a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will not give this generation any such sign.”12He sighed deeply and said, "Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it."
So he got back into the boat and left them, and he crossed to the other side of the lake. Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod13Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
But the disciples had forgotten to bring any food. They had only one loaf of bread with them in the boat.14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.
As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.”15"Be careful," Jesus warned them. "Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod."
At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread.16They discussed this with one another and said, "It is because we have no bread."
Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in?17Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?18Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember?
When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?” “Twelve,” they said.19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?" "Twelve," they replied.
“And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?” “Seven,” they said.20"And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?" They answered, "Seven."
“Don’t you understand yet?” he asked them. Jesus Heals a Blind Man21He said to them, "Do you still not understand?"
When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him.22They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?”23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, "Do you see anything?"
The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.”24He looked up and said, "I see people; they look like trees walking around."
Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
Jesus sent him away, saying, “Don’t go back into the village on your way home.” Peter’s Declaration about Jesus26Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't even go into the village."
Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?"
“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.”28They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets."
Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah. ”29"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Messiah."
But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. Jesus Predicts His Death30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”33But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns."
Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.35For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.
And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?36What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
Is anything worth more than your soul?37Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."
