1 At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Now a certain <i>man</i> was sick, <i>named</i> Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 ( Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was to anoint the Lord with perfume and wipe His feet with her hair.) It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. (It was <i>that</i> Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) And it was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)
3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. So the sisters sent <i>word</i> to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”
4 When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” When Jesus heard <i>that</i>, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. But when Jesus heard <i>this,</i> He said, “This sickness is not meant for death, but <i>is</i> for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”
5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. (Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.) Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6 So on hearing that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two days, So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days <i>longer</i> in the place where He was. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days,
7 and then He said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea. Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” Then after that saith he to <i>his</i> disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea again.” and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
8 “Rabbi, they replied, “the Jews just tried to stone You, and You are going back there? The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” <i>His</i> disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and <i>yet</i> You are going there again?” “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world. Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. Jesus replied, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.
10 But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up. After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. This He said, and after this He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.” After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better. The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will come out of it.” His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.”
13 They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about actual sleep. Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
14 So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus died, So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,

16 Then Thomas called Didymus said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him. So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. Therefore Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to <i>his</i> fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, so that we may die with Him!” Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
17 When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb. Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had <i>lain</i> in the grave four days already. So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away, Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away; Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,

23 “Your brother will rise again, Jesus told her. Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise <i>from the dead.</i>” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. 26 And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this? and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord, she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, <i>and</i> He who comes into the world.” “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
28 After Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you. When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. When she had said this, she left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.”
29 And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him. And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. As soon as she heard <i>that</i>, she arose quickly, and came unto him. And when she heard <i>this,</i> she got up quickly and came to Him. When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were in the house consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. 32 When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. So when Mary came <i>to the place</i> where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him! So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!” Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
37 But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept Lazarus from dying? But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? But some of them said, “Could this man, who opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also kept this man from dying?” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”
38 Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.
39 “Take away the stone, Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks, said Martha, the sister of the dead man. “ It has already been four days. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been <i>dead</i> four days. Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been <i>dead</i> four days.” “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”
40 Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. Then they took away the stone <i>from the place</i> where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up <i>his</i> eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. So they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
42 I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said <i>it</i>, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, because of the people standing around I said <i>it,</i> so that they may believe that You sent Me.” I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”
43 After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out! When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face wrapped in a cloth. “Unwrap him and let him go, Jesus told them. The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Out came the man who had died, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him. Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him. Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council meeting, and they were saying, “What are we doing in regard to the fact that this man is performing many signs? Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.
48 If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” If we let him thus alone, all <i>men</i> will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. If we let Him <i>go on</i> like this, all <i>the people</i> will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our place and our nation.” If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. nor are you taking into account that it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish <i>instead.</i>” You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
51 Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation, He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; Now he did not say this on his own, but as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,
52 and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one. and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.
53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him. So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. So from that day on they planned together to kill Him. So from that day on they plotted to take his life.
54 As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim in an area near the wilderness. And He stayed there with the disciples. Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. Therefore Jesus no longer <i>continued to</i> walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples. Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover. Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. 56 They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? Will He come to the feast at all? They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? So they were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple <i>area,</i> “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?”
57 But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him. Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him. Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew <i>it</i>, that they might take him. Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.
