Come Quickly to Me

A Psalm of David.

David, Israel’s second king, wrote from a life shaped by shepherding, warfare, royal responsibility, sin, repentance, and dependence on God. His psalms gave voice to Israel’s worship and reveal the prayers of a man who sought the Lord amid danger and need.

Psa 3:1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.…
Psa 51:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet…
Psa 63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness…

I call upon You, O LORD;

David appeals to YHWH, the covenant God of Israel, whose name signifies a personal and covenantal relationship with God, trusting Him as the One who hears and helps His people.

Psa 28:1 Of David. To You, O LORD, I call; be not deaf to me, O my Rock.…
Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…

come quickly to me.

Pressed by urgent circumstances, David asks God to act without delay. His request rests on the conviction that the Lord is present and able to deliver.

Psa 22:19 But You, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength,…
Psa 70:1 For the choirmaster. Of David. To bring remembrance.…
Psa 40:13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD…

Hear my voice when I call to You.

David approaches God personally and confidently, asking that his prayer be received. The petition reflects the covenant assurance that the Lord attends to those who seek Him.

Psa 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive…
Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 27:7 Hear, O LORD, my voice when I call; be merciful…

May my prayer be set before You like incense;

Incense was offered morning and evening before the Lord in the tabernacle and later in the temple. Its careful preparation and sacred use reflected reverence in approaching God. The psalmist asks that his prayer rise before God as an acceptable offering, marked by sincerity and devotion.

Rev 8:3-4 Then another angel, who had a golden censer,…
Rev 5:8 When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures…
Exo 30:7-8 And Aaron is to burn fragrant incense on it…

my uplifted hands, like the evening offering.

Raised hands expressed dependence, surrender, and appeal to God. The evening sacrifice was a regular act of Israel’s worship at the close of the day. By joining his prayer to that offering, the psalmist presents personal worship as part of the continual devotion owed to the Lord. The sacrifice also foreshadows Christ’s once-for-all offering for sin.

1Ti 2:8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray…
Num 28:3-8 And tell them that this is the food offering…
Lam 3:41 Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth;

David asks God to restrain words that could bring sin, harm others, or compromise his integrity amid pressure from enemies and evildoers. He recognizes that speech requires more than human resolve; it needs the Lord’s continual oversight.

Psa 39:1 For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.…
Pro 13:3 He who guards his mouth protects his life…
Pro 21:23 He who guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul…

keep watch at the door of my lips.

Like a guarded entrance, the lips should admit only what is true, righteous, and fitting. David seeks protection from rash, deceitful, angry, or corrupt speech, submitting even his words to God’s rule.

Psa 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips…
Pro 10:19 When words are many, sin is unavoidable,…
Ecc 5:2 Do not be quick to speak, and do not be hasty…

Do not let my heart be drawn to any evil thing

David asks God to restrain his inner desires before they become sinful actions. He recognizes that rebellion begins within and seeks the Lord’s help to preserve a heart set against evil.

Pro 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow…
Jas 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires…
Psa 119:36 Turn my heart to Your testimonies and not to covetous gain.

or take part in works of wickedness

He refuses not only sinful desire but also involvement in the deeds of those who practice evil. Righteousness requires rejecting the actions and patterns that oppose God’s commands.

Eph 5:11 Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds…
1Ti 5:22 Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands…
Rom 13:12 The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near.…

with men who do iniquity;

David understands that fellowship with habitual evildoers can draw a person into their ways. He asks to be kept from their influence and their shared guilt.

Pro 4:14-15 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked…
Psa 1:1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel…
Psa 26:4-5 I do not sit with deceitful men, nor keep company…

let me not feast on their delicacies.

The attractive rewards and pleasures connected with wickedness are compared to rich food. David does not want to be enticed by temporary benefits gained through sin, knowing they lead away from faithfulness to God.

Pro 23:1-3 When you sit down to dine with a ruler, consider carefully…
Dan 1:8 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself…
1Co 10:21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons…

Let the righteous man strike me;

The psalmist welcomes correction from a godly person, even when it is painful. Such discipline is not an act of hostility but a necessary restraint that exposes sin and calls him back to faithful obedience.

Pro 27:5-6 Better an open rebuke than love that is concealed.…
Pro 17:10 A rebuke cuts into a man of discernment…
Pro 9:8 Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you;…

let his rebuke be an act of loving devotion.

A righteous rebuke is given for the good of the one corrected. It reflects covenant faithfulness and seeks restoration rather than humiliation.

Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…
Heb 12:5-6 And you have forgotten the exhortation…
Rev 3:19 Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest…

It is oil for my head;

As oil symbolized blessing, healing, and anointing, and was used to honor, refresh, and care for a guest, godly correction is received as a benefit rather than an insult. It strengthens and preserves the one who humbly accepts it.

Psa 133:2 It is like fine oil on the head, running down…
Psa 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.…
Ecc 9:8 Let your garments always be white, and…

let me not refuse it.

The psalmist asks for a willing heart, knowing that rejecting rightful correction leads toward folly and sin.

Pro 15:31-32 He who listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among…
Job 5:17 Blessed indeed is the man whom God corrects; …
Pro 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,…

For my prayer is ever against the deeds of the wicked.

While accepting the correction of the righteous, he remains opposed to the plans and actions of the wicked, bringing their evil before God in prayer.

Psa 140:1-5 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD,…
Psa 58:6-11 O God, shatter their teeth in their mouths;…
Psa 64:1-4 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear, O God,…

When their rulers are thrown down from the cliffs,

The downfall of wicked rulers reveals the certainty of God’s judgment against those who oppress the righteous and reject His ways. Their power, once secure and elevated, ends suddenly and publicly.

Jer 51:25 Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain,…
2Ki 9:33 “Throw her down!” yelled Jehu. So they threw her down…
2Ch 25:12 and the army of Judah also captured 10,000 men alive.…

the people will listen to my words,

With corrupt leadership removed, David’s warnings and counsel will be heard. Those who had followed evil rulers will recognize the truth of the righteous man’s words.

Deu 18:19 And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen…
Act 3:22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up…
Luk 10:16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you…

for they are pleasant.

David’s words are shown to be right, fitting, and beneficial because they agree with God’s justice rather than the violence and deceit of the wicked.

Pro 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul…
Pro 15:26 The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked,…
Psa 19:10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;…

As when one plows and breaks up the soil,

The image is of freshly turned ground, with clods and stones scattered across the field. Such labor prepared the land for sowing, but it also conveyed violent disruption.

Psa 129:3 The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows…
Hos 10:12 Sow for yourselves righteousness and reap the fruit…
Jer 4:3 Break up your unplowed ground, and do not sow among the thorns.…

so our bones have been scattered

David likens the slain and exposed remains of his people to debris thrown aside by a plow. Scattered bones marked defeat, shame, and the denial of proper burial.

Psa 53:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread…
Ezk 6:5 I will lay the corpses of the Israelites before their idols…
Ezk 37:1-2 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out…

at the mouth of Sheol.

The dead lay as though cast at the entrance to the grave, near the realm of the departed. David’s description emphasizes the severity of the danger and his need for God’s deliverance.

Isa 5:14 Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide…
Psa 69:15 Do not let the floods engulf me or the depths swallow me up…
Jon 2:2 “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”…

But my eyes are fixed on You, O GOD the Lord.

Surrounded by hostile people and aware of his own weakness, David directs his attention to the Lord rather than to the threats around him. He recognizes God as both the covenant-keeping God of Israel and the sovereign ruler over all circumstances.

Psa 25:15 My eyes are always on the LORD, for He will…
Psa 123:2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master…
Psa 121:1-2 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills.…

In You I seek refuge;

David does not rely on political strength, military protection, or personal ability. He looks to God as his shelter from those who set traps and seek his ruin.

Psa 31:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. In You, O LORD…
Psa 16:1 A Miktam of David. Preserve me, O God, for in You…
Psa 57:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”…

do not leave my soul defenseless.

The request expresses David’s dependence on God to preserve his life and keep him from being overcome by wickedness. He asks not only for deliverance from enemies but also for protection that will keep him faithful to the Lord.

Psa 142:4 Look to my right and see; no one attends to me.…
Psa 38:21-22 Do not forsake me, O LORD; be not far from me, O my God.…
Psa 27:12 Do not hand me over to the will of my foes,…

Keep me from the snares they have laid for me,

David asks God to guard him from concealed plots devised by those who oppose righteousness. Like traps set by hunters, such schemes are carefully hidden and intended to bring sudden ruin. He recognizes that human wisdom alone cannot expose every danger and depends on the Lord to preserve him from his enemies’ designs.

Psa 119:110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed…
Psa 140:5 The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net…
Psa 31:4 You free me from the net laid out for me…

and from the lures of evildoers.

Wicked people seek not only to harm the innocent but also to draw them into wrongdoing. Their enticements promise advantage or escape while leading toward sin and destruction. David asks for deliverance from both the danger they set before him and the temptation to respond according to their evil ways.

Pro 1:10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not yield to them.
Pro 16:29 A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him…
Pro 7:21 With her great persuasion she entices him;…

Let the wicked fall into their own nets,

The wicked set traps through deceit, violence, and false accusations, yet God’s justice often turns their own devices against them. Their schemes do not escape His notice, and the harm they intend for others becomes the means of their downfall.

Psa 35:8 May ruin befall them by surprise; may the net they hid…
Psa 57:6 They spread a net for my feet; my soul was despondent.…
Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone…

while I pass by in safety.

David trusts God to preserve him as he moves beyond the danger prepared for him. The contrast is clear: the wicked are caught in their own treachery, while the faithful servant is delivered under God’s protection.

Pro 3:23-26 Then you will go on your way in safety,…
Psa 121:7-8 The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve…
Pro 1:33 But whoever listens to me will dwell in safety,…
