Ezekiel 6
1. The judgment of Israel for their idolatry
8. A remnant shall be blessed
11. The faithful are exhorted to lament their abominations and calamities

I will lay the corpses of the Israelites before their idols

God’s judgment would expose the helplessness of the gods Israel had chosen to serve. Many Israelites had adopted the worship practices of surrounding nations, placing idols and altars on high places throughout the land. Those idols could neither protect their worshipers nor prevent the destruction of the places devoted to them. Death before the images they trusted would reveal the ruin brought by covenant unfaithfulness.

Lev 26:30 I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense…
Jer 8:1-2 “At that time,” declares the LORD, “the bones of the kings…

and scatter your bones around your altars.

The destruction would extend to the altars themselves. Scattered bones represented disgrace and defilement, making these centers of idolatry unclean. Israel’s false worship had corrupted the land, and God would bring judgment upon both the worshipers and the objects of their rebellion.

2Ki 23:20 On the altars he slaughtered the priests of the high places…
1Ki 13:2 And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD,…
2Ki 23:16 And as Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there…
