John 18

The Betrayal of Jesus
(Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–52; Luke 22:47–53)

1  Ταῦτα (These things) εἰπὼν (having said) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) χειμάρρου (Brook) τοῦ (-) Κέδρων (of Kidron), ὅπου (where) ἦν (there was) κῆπος (a garden), εἰς (into) ὃν (which) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) αὐτὸς (He) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 2  ᾔδει (Knew) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) Ἰούδας (Judas) (who) παραδιδοὺς (is delivering up) αὐτὸν (Him) τὸν (the) τόπον (place), ὅτι (because) πολλάκις (often) συνήχθη (gathered together) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐκεῖ (there) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 3  (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰούδας (Judas) λαβὼν (having procured) τὴν (the) σπεῖραν (cohort) καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ὑπηρέτας (officers) ἔρχεται (comes) ἐκεῖ (there) μετὰ (with) φανῶν (lanterns) καὶ (and) λαμπάδων (torches) καὶ (and) ὅπλων (weapons).

4  Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) εἰδὼς (knowing) πάντα (all things) τὰ (that) ἐρχόμενα (are coming) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐξῆλθεν (having gone out) καὶ (also) λέγει (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Τίνα (Whom) ζητεῖτε (do you⁺ seek)?

5  Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) αὐτῷ (Him)· Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (of) Ναζωραῖον (Nazareth).

Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He).

Εἱστήκει (Had been standing) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) Ἰούδας (Judas) (who) παραδιδοὺς (is delivering up) αὐτὸν (Him) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them). 6  ὡς (When) οὖν (therefore) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), ἀπῆλθον (they drew) εἰς (toward) τὰ (the) ὀπίσω (back) καὶ (and) ἔπεσαν (fell) χαμαί (to the ground).

7  Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) ἐπηρώτησεν (He questioned) αὐτούς (them)· Τίνα (Whom) ζητεῖτε (do you⁺ seek)?

Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said)· Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (of) Ναζωραῖον (Nazareth).

8  Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Εἶπον (I said) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He)· εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐμὲ (Me) ζητεῖτε (you⁺ seek), ἄφετε (Allow) τούτους (these) ὑπάγειν (to go away)· 9  ἵνα (so that) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) (the) λόγος (word) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (He had spoken), ὅτι (-) Οὓς (Those whom) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), οὐκ (not) ἀπώλεσα (I lost) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) οὐδένα (not one).

10  Σίμων (Simon) οὖν (then) Πέτρος (Peter) ἔχων (having) μάχαιραν (a sword) εἵλκυσεν (drew) αὐτὴν (it) καὶ (and) ἔπαισεν (struck) τὸν (the) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest) δοῦλον (servant) καὶ (and) ἀπέκοψεν (cut off) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὸ (the) ὠτάριον (ear) τὸ (-) δεξιόν (right). ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὄνομα (the name) τῷ (of the) δούλῳ (servant) Μάλχος (Malchus).

11  εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter)· Βάλε (Put) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θήκην (sheath)· τὸ (The) ποτήριον (cup) (that) δέδωκέν (has given) μοι (Me) (the) Πατήρ (Father), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πίω (shall I drink) αὐτό (it)?

12  (-) οὖν (Then) σπεῖρα (the cohort) καὶ (and) (the) χιλίαρχος (commander) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) συνέλαβον (took hold of) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔδησαν (bound) αὐτὸν (Him), 13  καὶ (and) ἤγαγον (they led Him away) πρὸς (to) Ἅνναν (Annas) πρῶτον (first)· ἦν (he was) γὰρ (for) πενθερὸς (father-in-law) τοῦ (-) Καϊάφα (of Caiaphas), ὃς (who) ἦν (was) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) τοῦ (the) ἐνιαυτοῦ (year) ἐκείνου (same)· 14  ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) Καϊάφας (Caiaphas) (the one) συμβουλεύσας (having given counsel) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) ὅτι (that) συμφέρει (it is profitable) ἕνα (for one) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἀποθανεῖν (to perish) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people).

Peter’s First Denial
(Matthew 26:69–70; Mark 14:66–68; Luke 22:54–57)

15  Ἠκολούθει (Were following) δὲ (now) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) ἄλλος (another) μαθητής (disciple). (Since) δὲ (now) μαθητὴς (disciple) ἐκεῖνος (that) ἦν (was) γνωστὸς (known) τῷ (to the) ἀρχιερεῖ (high priest), καὶ (also) συνεισῆλθεν (he entered with) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αὐλὴν (court) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest), 16  (-) δὲ (But) Πέτρος (Peter) εἱστήκει (stood) πρὸς (at) τῇ (the) θύρᾳ (door) ἔξω (outside). ἐξῆλθεν (Went out) οὖν (therefore) (the) μαθητὴς (disciple) (-) ἄλλος (other) (who was) γνωστὸς (known) τοῦ (to the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (spoke) τῇ (to the) θυρωρῷ (doorkeeper), καὶ (and) εἰσήγαγεν (brought in) τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter).

17  Λέγει (Says) οὖν (therefore) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter) (the) παιδίσκη (servant girl) (the) θυρωρός (doorkeeper)· Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) εἶ (are) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τούτου (this)?

Λέγει (Says) ἐκεῖνος (he)· Οὐκ (Not) εἰμί (I am).

18  Εἱστήκεισαν (Were standing) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) δοῦλοι (servants) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers) ἀνθρακιὰν (a fire of coals) πεποιηκότες (having made), ὅτι (for) ψῦχος (cold) ἦν (it was), καὶ (and) ἐθερμαίνοντο (they were warming themselves)· ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) (-) Πέτρος (Peter) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them) ἑστὼς (standing) καὶ (and) θερμαινόμενος (warming himself).

Jesus before the High Priest

19  (-) οὖν (Then) ἀρχιερεὺς (the high priest) ἠρώτησεν (questioned) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) περὶ (concerning) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) διδαχῆς (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

20  Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (him) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἐγὼ (I) παρρησίᾳ (openly) λελάληκα (have spoken) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world)· ἐγὼ (I) πάντοτε (always) ἐδίδαξα (taught) ἐν (in) συναγωγῇ (the synagogue) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), ὅπου (where) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) συνέρχονται (come together), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) κρυπτῷ (secret) ἐλάλησα (I spoke) οὐδέν (nothing). 21  τί (Why) με (Me) ἐρωτᾷς (do you question)? ἐρώτησον (Question) τοὺς (those) ἀκηκοότας (having heard) τί (what) ἐλάλησα (I spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them)· ἴδε (behold) οὗτοι (they) οἴδασιν (know) (what) εἶπον (said) ἐγώ (I).

22  Ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (on His) εἰπόντος (having said) εἷς (one) παρεστηκὼς (standing by) τῶν (of the) ὑπηρετῶν (officers) ἔδωκεν (gave) ῥάπισμα (a slap) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) εἰπών (having said)· Οὕτως (Thus) ἀποκρίνῃ (do You answer) τῷ (the) ἀρχιερεῖ (high priest)?

23  Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (him) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Εἰ (If) κακῶς (evil) ἐλάλησα (I spoke), μαρτύρησον (testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) κακοῦ (evil)· εἰ (if) δὲ (however) καλῶς (rightly), τί (why) με (Me) δέρεις (do you strike)?

24  Ἀπέστειλεν (Sent) οὖν (then) αὐτὸν (Him) (-) Ἅννας (Annas) δεδεμένον (bound) πρὸς (to) Καϊάφαν (Caiaphas) τὸν (the) ἀρχιερέα (high priest).

Peter’s Second and Third Denials

25  Ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter) ἑστὼς (standing) καὶ (and) θερμαινόμενος (warming himself). εἶπον (They said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to him)· Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἶ (are)?

Ἠρνήσατο (Denied) ἐκεῖνος (he) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said)· Οὐκ (Not) εἰμί (I am).

26  Λέγει (Says) εἷς (one) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) δούλων (servants) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest), συγγενὴς (kinsman) ὢν (being of him) οὗ (of whom) ἀπέκοψεν (had cut off) Πέτρος (Peter) τὸ (the) ὠτίον (ear)· Οὐκ (Not) ἐγώ (I) σε (you) εἶδον (saw) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κήπῳ (garden) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him)?

27  Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (then) ἠρνήσατο (denied it) Πέτρος (Peter), καὶ (and) εὐθέως (immediately) ἀλέκτωρ (a rooster) ἐφώνησεν (crowed).

Jesus before Pilate

28  Ἄγουσιν (They are leading) οὖν (then) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium)· ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) πρωΐ (early)· καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐκ (not) εἰσῆλθον (entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) μιανθῶσιν (they should be defiled) ἀλλὰ (but) φάγωσιν (might eat) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover).

29  Ἐξῆλθεν (Went forth) οὖν (therefore) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἔξω (out) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) φησίν (said)· Τίνα (What) κατηγορίαν (accusation) φέρετε (do you⁺ bring) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τούτου (this)?

30  Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦν (were) οὗτος (He) κακὸν (evil) ποιῶν (doing), οὐκ (not) ἄν (-) σοι (to you) παρεδώκαμεν (we would have delivered up) αὐτόν (Him).

31  Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate)· Λάβετε (Take) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑμεῖς (yourselves), καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) κρίνατε (judge) αὐτόν (Him).

Εἶπον (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews)· Ἡμῖν (To us) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (it is permitted) ἀποκτεῖναι (to put to death) οὐδένα (no one)· 32  ἵνα (that) (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ὃν (which) εἶπεν (He said) σημαίνων (signifying) ποίῳ (what) θανάτῳ (death) ἤμελλεν (He was about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die).

33  Εἰσῆλθεν (Entered) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) καὶ (and) ἐφώνησεν (he called) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?

34  Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἀπὸ (Of) σεαυτοῦ (yourself) σὺ (you) τοῦτο (this) λέγεις (say), (or) ἄλλοι (others) εἶπόν (said it) σοι (to you) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me)?

35  Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate)· Μήτι (Not) ἐγὼ (I) Ἰουδαῖός (a Jew) εἰμι (am)? τὸ (The) ἔθνος (nation) τὸ (-) σὸν (of You) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) παρέδωκάν (delivered up) σε (You) ἐμοί (to me)· τί (What) ἐποίησας (did You do)?

37  Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate)· Οὐκοῦν (Then) βασιλεὺς (a king) εἶ (are) σύ (You)?

Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Σὺ (You) λέγεις (say) ὅτι (that) βασιλεύς (a king) εἰμι (I am). ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) γεγέννημαι (have been born) καὶ (and) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) ἐλήλυθα (I have come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἵνα (so that) μαρτυρήσω (I may testify) τῇ (to the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth)· πᾶς (Everyone) (-) ὢν (being) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἀκούει (hears) μου (of Me) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice).

38  Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate)· Τί (What) ἐστιν (is) ἀλήθεια (truth)?

Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) εἰπὼν (having said) πάλιν (again) ἐξῆλθεν (he went out) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἐγὼ (I) οὐδεμίαν (no) εὑρίσκω (find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) αἰτίαν (guilt). 39  ἔστιν (It is) δὲ (however) συνήθεια (custom) ὑμῖν (your⁺) ἵνα (that) ἕνα (one) ἀπολύσω (I should release) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) πάσχα (Passover)· βούλεσθε (do you⁺ wish that) οὖν (therefore) ἀπολύσω (I should release) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) τὸν (the) Βασιλέα (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?

40  Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (then) πάλιν (again) λέγοντες (saying)· Μὴ (Not) τοῦτον (this one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas). ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) (-) Βαραββᾶς (Barabbas) λῃστής (a robber).
