Luke 23

Jesus before Pilate
(Matthew 27:11–14; John 18:28–40)

1  Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰν (having risen up) ἅπαν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) αὐτῶν (of them) ἤγαγον (led) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate). 2  ἤρξαντο (They began) δὲ (then) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him) λέγοντες (saying)· Τοῦτον (This man) εὕραμεν (we found) διαστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) κωλύοντα (forbidding) φόρους (taxes) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) διδόναι (to be given), καὶ (and) λέγοντα (declaring) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) Χριστὸν (Christ) βασιλέα (a King) εἶναι (to be).

3  (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἠρώτησεν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) λέγων (saying)· Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?

(-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτῷ (him) ἔφη (He was saying)· Σὺ (You) λέγεις (say).

4  (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds)· Οὐδὲν (Not) εὑρίσκω (I find) αἴτιον (guilt) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this).

5  Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπίσχυον (they kept insisting) λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-) Ἀνασείει (He stirs up) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people), διδάσκων (teaching) καθ’ (throughout) ὅλης (all) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), καὶ (and) ἀρξάμενος (He has begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) ἕως (even to) ὧδε (here).

Jesus before Herod

6  Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) δὲ (now) ἀκούσας (having heard) ἐπηρώτησεν (asked) εἰ (whether) (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) Γαλιλαῖός (a Galilean) ἐστιν (is), 7  καὶ (And) ἐπιγνοὺς (having learned) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ἐξουσίας (jurisdiction) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod) ἐστὶν (He is), ἀνέπεμψεν (he sent up) αὐτὸν (Him) πρὸς (to) Ἡρῴδην (Herod), ὄντα (being) καὶ (also) αὐτὸν (he himself) ἐν (in) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem) ἐν (in) ταύταις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days).

8  (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ἰδὼν (having seen) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐχάρη (was glad) λίαν (exceedingly)· ἦν (he was) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (of) ἱκανῶν (a long) χρόνων (time) θέλων (wishing) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτὸν (Him) διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) ἀκούειν (hearing) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) ἤλπιζέν (he was hoping) τι (some) σημεῖον (sign) ἰδεῖν (to see) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) γινόμενον (done). 9  ἐπηρώτα (he kept questioning) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) λόγοις (words) ἱκανοῖς (many)· αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίνατο (answered) αὐτῷ (him).

10  Εἱστήκεισαν (Had been standing by) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) εὐτόνως (vehemently) κατηγοροῦντες (accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him). 11  ἐξουθενήσας (having treated with contempt) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (also) (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) στρατεύμασιν (troops) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἐμπαίξας (having mocked Him), περιβαλὼν (having put on Him) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) λαμπρὰν (splendid) ἀνέπεμψεν (sent back) αὐτὸν (Him) τῷ (to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate).

12  Ἐγένοντο (Became) δὲ (then) φίλοι (friends) (-) τε (both) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) καὶ (and) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) μετ’ (with) ἀλλήλων (one another)· προϋπῆρχον (previously it had been that) γὰρ (for) ἐν (at) ἔχθρᾳ (enmity) ὄντες (they were) πρὸς (between) αὑτούς (themselves).

13  Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) δὲ (then) συνκαλεσάμενος (having called together) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἄρχοντας (rulers) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) 14  εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· Προσηνέγκατέ (You⁺ brought) μοι (to me) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) τοῦτον (this) ὡς (as one) ἀποστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸν (the) λαόν (people), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold) ἐγὼ (I) ἐνώπιον (before) ὑμῶν (you⁺) ἀνακρίνας (having examined Him) οὐθὲν (nothing) εὗρον (found) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this) αἴτιον (guilty) ὧν (of that) κατηγορεῖτε (accusation you⁺ are bringing) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him). 15  ἀλλ’ (no) οὐδὲ (nor even) Ἡρῴδης (Herod)· ἀνέπεμψεν (he sent back) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸν (Him) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us)· καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) ἐστὶν (is) πεπραγμένον (done) αὐτῷ (by Him)· 16  παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).

18  Ἀνέκραγον (They cried out) δὲ (however) παμπληθεὶ (all together) λέγοντες (saying)· Αἶρε (Away with) τοῦτον (this man), ἀπόλυσον (release) δὲ (now) ἡμῖν (to us) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas)· 19  ὅστις (who) ἦν (was) διὰ (on account of) στάσιν (insurrection) τινὰ (a certain) γενομένην (having been made) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) καὶ (and) φόνον (murder) βληθεὶς (one having been cast) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison).

20  Πάλιν (Again) δὲ (therefore) (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) προσεφώνησεν (called) αὐτοῖς (to them), θέλων (wanting) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). 21  οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπεφώνουν (they were crying out) λέγοντες (saying)· Σταύρου (Crucify) σταύρου (crucify) αὐτόν (Him).

22  (-) δὲ (And) τρίτον (a third time) εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (committed) οὗτος (this man)? οὐδὲν (No) αἴτιον (cause) θανάτου (of death) εὗρον (I found) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him)· παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).

23  Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπέκειντο (they were urgent) φωναῖς (with voices) μεγάλαις (loud) αἰτούμενοι (asking for) αὐτὸν (Him) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified), καὶ (And) κατίσχυον (were prevailing) αἱ (the) φωναὶ (voices) αὐτῶν (of them). 24  καὶ (and) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐπέκρινεν (sentenced) γενέσθαι (to be done) τὸ (the) αἴτημα (demand) αὐτῶν (of them)· 25  ἀπέλυσεν (He released) δὲ (then) τὸν (the one) διὰ (on account of) στάσιν (insurrection) καὶ (and) φόνον (murder) βεβλημένον (having been cast) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ὃν (whom) ᾐτοῦντο (they had asked for), τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) παρέδωκεν (he delivered up) τῷ (to the) θελήματι (will) αὐτῶν (of them).

The Crucifixion

26  Καὶ (And) ὡς (as) ἀπήγαγον (they led away) αὐτόν (Him), ἐπιλαβόμενοι (having laid hold on) Σίμωνά (Simon) τινα (a certain man) Κυρηναῖον (of Cyrene) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἀπ’ (from) ἀγροῦ (the country) ἐπέθηκαν (they put upon) αὐτῷ (him) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) φέρειν (to carry it) ὄπισθεν (behind) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

27  Ἠκολούθει (Were following) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (Him) πολὺ (a great) πλῆθος (multitude) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) γυναικῶν (of women) αἳ (who) ἐκόπτοντο (were mourning) καὶ (and) ἐθρήνουν (lamenting for) αὐτόν (Him). 28  στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὰς (them) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said)· Θυγατέρες (Daughters) Ἰερουσαλήμ (of Jerusalem), μὴ (not) κλαίετε (weep) ἐπ’ (for) ἐμέ (Me)· πλὴν (but) ἐφ’ (for) ἑαυτὰς (yourselves) κλαίετε (weep) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (for) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you⁺), 29  ὅτι (For) ἰδοὺ (behold) ἔρχονται (are coming) ἡμέραι (the days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) ἐροῦσιν (they will say)· Μακάριαι (Blessed are) αἱ (the) στεῖραι (barren), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) κοιλίαι (wombs) αἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἐγέννησαν (did bear), καὶ (and) μαστοὶ (the breasts) οἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἔθρεψαν (nursed). 30  τότε (Then)·

Ἄρξονται (They will begin) λέγειν (to say) τοῖς (to the) ὄρεσιν (mountains)· Πέσετε (Fall) ἐφ’ (upon) ἡμᾶς (us),

Καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) βουνοῖς (hills)· Καλύψατε (Cover) ἡμᾶς (us)·

31  Ὅτι (For) εἰ (if) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὑγρῷ (green) ξύλῳ (tree) ταῦτα (these things) ποιοῦσιν (they do), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ξηρῷ (dry) τί (what) γένηται (might happen)?

32  Ἤγοντο (Were being led away) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἕτεροι (other) κακοῦργοι (criminals) δύο (two) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀναιρεθῆναι (to be put to death).

33  Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἦλθον (they came) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τὸν (-) καλούμενον (called) Κρανίον (The Skull), ἐκεῖ (there) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) κακούργους (criminals), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) ὃν (one) δὲ (now) ἐξ (on) ἀριστερῶν (the left hand).

34  (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔλεγεν (was saying)· Πάτερ (Father), ἄφες (forgive) αὐτοῖς (them)· οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) οἴδασιν (they know) τί (what) ποιοῦσιν (they do). διαμεριζόμενοι (Dividing) δὲ (then) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔβαλον (they cast) κλήρους (lots).

35  Καὶ (And) εἱστήκει (stood) (the) λαὸς (people) θεωρῶν (looking on). ἐξεμυκτήριζον (Were deriding Him) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) λέγοντες (saying)· Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved), σωσάτω (let Him save) ἑαυτόν (Himself), εἰ (if) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) (the) ἐκλεκτός (Chosen One).

36  Ἐνέπαιξαν (Mocked) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers) προσερχόμενοι (coming near), ὄξος (sour wine) προσφέροντες (offering) αὐτῷ (Him) 37  καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying)· Εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself).

38  Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἐπιγραφὴ (an inscription) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτῷ (Him)

39  Εἷς (One) δὲ (now) τῶν (of the) κρεμασθέντων (having been hanged) κακούργων (criminals) ἐβλασφήμει (was railing at) αὐτόν (Him) λέγων (saying)· Οὐχὶ (Not) σὺ (you are) εἶ (if) (the) Χριστός (Christ)? σῶσον (Save) σεαυτὸν (Yourself) καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us).

40  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) (the) ἕτερος (other) ἐπιτιμῶν (was rebuking) αὐτῷ (him) ἔφη (saying)· Οὐδὲ (Not even) φοβῇ (fear) σὺ (you) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ὅτι (since) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) κρίματι (judgment) εἶ (you are)? 41  καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) μὲν (indeed) δικαίως (justly), ἄξια (Things worthy) γὰρ (for) ὧν (of what) ἐπράξαμεν (we did) ἀπολαμβάνομεν (we are receiving back)· οὗτος (this man) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄτοπον (wrong) ἔπραξεν (did). 42  καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (he was saying)· Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), μνήσθητί (remember) μου (me) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃς (You come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) σου (of You).

43  Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἀμήν (Truly) σοι (to you) λέγω (I say), σήμερον (today) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἔσῃ (you will be) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Παραδείσῳ (Paradise).

47  Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) (the) ἑκατοντάρχης (centurion) τὸ (that) γενόμενον (having taken place) ἐδόξαζεν (he was glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) λέγων (saying)· Ὄντως (Certainly) (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this) δίκαιος (righteous) ἦν (was). 48  καὶ (And) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) συμπαραγενόμενοι (having come together) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) θεωρίαν (spectacle) ταύτην (this), θεωρήσαντες (having seen) τὰ (the things) γενόμενα (having taken place), τύπτοντες (beating) τὰ (the) στήθη (breasts) ὑπέστρεφον (were turning back). 49  εἱστήκεισαν (Stood) δὲ (now) πάντες (all) οἱ (those who) γνωστοὶ (knew) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar off), καὶ (and) γυναῖκες (women) αἱ (those) συνακολουθοῦσαι (having followed) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee), ὁρῶσαι (beholding) ταῦτα (these things).

55  Κατακολουθήσασαι (Having followed) δὲ (then) αἱ (the) γυναῖκες (women), αἵτινες (who) ἦσαν (were) συνεληλυθυῖαι (come) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) αὐτῷ (with Him), ἐθεάσαντο (saw) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb) καὶ (and) ὡς (how) ἐτέθη (was laid) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him), 56  ὑποστρέψασαι (Having returned) δὲ (then) ἡτοίμασαν (they prepared) ἀρώματα (spices) καὶ (and) μύρα (anointing oils).
