Leviticus 5

Sins Requiring a Sin Offering
(Leviticus 4:1–35; Leviticus 6:24–30)

1  וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ (And a soul) כִּֽי־ (if) תֶחֱטָ֗א (sins) וְשָֽׁמְעָה֙ (and hears) ק֣וֹל (the voice) אָלָ֔ה (of an oath), וְה֣וּא (and he) עֵ֔ד (is a witness), א֥וֹ (whether) רָאָ֖ה (he has seen) א֣וֹ (or) יָדָ֑ע (he has known), אִם־ (if) ל֥וֹא (not) יַגִּ֖יד (he does tell), וְנָשָׂ֥א (then he shall bear) עֲוֺנֽוֹ׃ (his iniquity).

2  א֣וֹ (Or) נֶ֗פֶשׁ (a soul) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (if) תִּגַּע֮ (touches) בְּכָל־ (any) דָּבָ֣ר (thing) טָמֵא֒ (unclean), אוֹ֩ (whether) בְנִבְלַ֨ת (the carcass) חַיָּ֜ה (of a beast) טְמֵאָ֗ה (unclean), א֤וֹ (or) בְּנִבְלַת֙ (the carcass) בְּהֵמָ֣ה (of livestock) טְמֵאָ֔ה (unclean), א֕וֹ (or) בְּנִבְלַ֖ת (the carcass) שֶׁ֣רֶץ (of a swarming thing) טָמֵ֑א (unclean), וְנֶעְלַ֣ם (and it is hidden) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (from him), וְה֥וּא (and he is) טָמֵ֖א (unclean) וְאָשֵֽׁם׃ (and guilty).

3  א֣וֹ (Or) כִ֤י (if) יִגַּע֙ (he touches) בְּטֻמְאַ֣ת (uncleanness) אָדָ֔ם (of man), לְכֹל֙ (according to all) טֻמְאָת֔וֹ (his uncleanness) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) יִטְמָ֖א (he becomes unclean) בָּ֑הּ (by), וְנֶעְלַ֣ם (and it is hidden) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (from him) וְה֥וּא (and he) יָדַ֖ע (realizes it), וְאָשֵֽׁם׃ (and he shall be guilty).

4  א֣וֹ (Or) נֶ֡פֶשׁ (a soul) כִּ֣י (if) תִשָּׁבַע֩ (swears), לְבַטֵּ֨א (to utter) בִשְׂפָתַ֜יִם (with his lips) לְהָרַ֣ע׀ (to do evil) א֣וֹ (or) לְהֵיטִ֗יב (to do good), לְ֠כֹל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יְבַטֵּ֧א (utters) הָאָדָ֛ם (the man) בִּשְׁבֻעָ֖ה (by an oath), וְנֶעְלַ֣ם (and it is hidden) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (from him), וְהוּא־ (and he) יָדַ֥ע (realizes it), וְאָשֵׁ֖ם (and he shall be guilty) לְאַחַ֥ת (in one) מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃ (of these).

5  וְהָיָ֥ה (And it shall be) כִֽי־ (when) יֶאְשַׁ֖ם (he is guilty) לְאַחַ֣ת (in one) מֵאֵ֑לֶּה (of these), וְהִ֨תְוַדָּ֔ה (that he shall confess) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) חָטָ֖א (he has sinned) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (in it). 6  וְהֵבִ֣יא (And he shall bring) אֶת־ (-) אֲשָׁמ֣וֹ (his guilt offering) לַיהוָ֡ה (to YHWH) עַ֣ל (for) חַטָּאתוֹ֩ (his sin) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) חָטָ֜א (he has sinned): נְקֵבָ֨ה (A female) מִן־ (from) הַצֹּ֥אן (the flock), כִּשְׂבָּ֛ה (a lamb) אֽוֹ־ (or) שְׂעִירַ֥ת (a female kid) עִזִּ֖ים (of the goats), לְחַטָּ֑את (for a sin offering). וְכִפֶּ֥ר (And shall make atonement) עָלָ֛יו (upon him) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) מֵחַטָּאתֽוֹ׃ (from his sin).

7  וְאִם־ (And if) לֹ֨א (not) תַגִּ֣יע (reaches) יָדוֹ֮ (his hand) דֵּ֣י (to the sufficiency) שֶׂה֒ (a lamb), וְהֵבִ֨יא (and he shall bring) אֶת־ (-) אֲשָׁמ֜וֹ (for his guilt offering) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חָטָ֗א (he has sinned) שְׁתֵּ֥י (two) תֹרִ֛ים (turtledoves) אֽוֹ־ (or) שְׁנֵ֥י (two) בְנֵֽי־ (sons) יוֹנָ֖ה (of a pigeon) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH)— אֶחָ֥ד (one) לְחַטָּ֖את (for a sin offering) וְאֶחָ֥ד (and one) לְעֹלָֽה׃ (for a burnt offering). 8  וְהֵבִ֤יא (And he shall bring) אֹתָם֙ (them) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וְהִקְרִ֛יב (and he shall bring near) אֶת־ (-) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that which is) לַחַטָּ֖את (for the sin offering) רִאשׁוֹנָ֑ה (first), וּמָלַ֧ק (and he shall wring off) אֶת־ (-) רֹאשׁ֛וֹ (its head) מִמּ֥וּל (from) עָרְפּ֖וֹ (its neck), וְלֹ֥א (not) יַבְדִּֽיל׃ (shall divide it completely); 9  וְהִזָּ֞ה (and he shall sprinkle) מִדַּ֤ם (from the blood) הַחַטָּאת֙ (of the sin offering) עַל־ (on) קִ֣יר (the side) הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (of the altar), וְהַנִּשְׁאָ֣ר (and the remainder) בַּדָּ֔ם (of the blood) יִמָּצֵ֖ה (shall be drained out) אֶל־ (at) יְס֣וֹד (the base) הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ (of the altar). חַטָּ֖את (A sin offering) הֽוּא׃ (it is). 10  וְאֶת־ (And) הַשֵּׁנִ֛י (the second) יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (he shall do) עֹלָ֖ה (as a burnt offering), כַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט (according to the ordinance). וְכִפֶּ֨ר (And shall make atonement) עָלָ֧יו (upon him) הַכֹּהֵ֛ן (the priest) מֵחַטָּאת֥וֹ (from his sin) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) חָטָ֖א (he has sinned), וְנִסְלַ֥ח (and it shall be forgiven) לֽוֹ׃ס (for him).

11  וְאִם־ (And if) לֹא֩ (not) תַשִּׂ֨יג (reaches) יָד֜וֹ (his hand) לִשְׁתֵּ֣י (to two) תֹרִ֗ים (turtledoves) אוֹ֮ (or) לִשְׁנֵ֣י (to two) בְנֵי־ (sons) יוֹנָה֒ (of a pigeon), וְהֵבִ֨יא (then he shall bring near) אֶת־ (-) קָרְבָּנ֜וֹ (for his offering) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חָטָ֗א (he has sinned) עֲשִׂירִ֧ת (a tenth) הָאֵפָ֛ה (of an ephah) סֹ֖לֶת (of fine flour) לְחַטָּ֑את (for a sin offering). לֹא־ (Not) יָשִׂ֨ים (shall he put) עָלֶ֜יהָ (on it) שֶׁ֗מֶן (oil), וְלֹא־ (and not) יִתֵּ֤ן (shall he put) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (on it) לְבֹנָ֔ה (frankincense), כִּ֥י (for) חַטָּ֖את (is a sin offering) הִֽיא׃ (it). 12  וֶהֱבִיאָהּ֮ (And he shall bring it) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֵן֒ (the priest), וְקָמַ֣ץ (and shall take) הַכֹּהֵ֣ן׀ (the priest) מִ֠מֶּנָּה (from it) מְל֨וֹא (the fullness) קֻמְצ֜וֹ (of his handful) אֶת־ (-) אַזְכָּרָתָה֙ (its memorial portion), וְהִקְטִ֣יר (and he shall burn it) הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה (on the altar), עַ֖ל (on) אִשֵּׁ֣י (the fire offerings) יְהוָ֑ה (to YHWH); חַטָּ֖את (a sin offering) הִֽוא׃ (it is). 13  וְכִפֶּר֩ (And shall make atonement) עָלָ֨יו (upon him) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) עַל־ (for) חַטָּאת֧וֹ (his sin) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) חָטָ֛א (he has sinned) מֵֽאַחַ֥ת (in one) מֵאֵ֖לֶּה (of these), וְנִסְלַ֣ח (and it shall be forgiven) ל֑וֹ (for him) וְהָיְתָ֥ה (and the remainder shall be) לַכֹּהֵ֖ן (for the priest), כַּמִּנְחָֽה׃ס (like the grain offering).

Laws for Guilt Offerings

14  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 15  נֶ֚פֶשׁ (A soul) כִּֽי־ (if) תִמְעֹ֣ל (acts unfaithfully) מַ֔עַל (an unfaithfulness), וְחָֽטְאָה֙ (and sins) בִּשְׁגָגָ֔ה (in error) מִקָּדְשֵׁ֖י (the holy things) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְהֵבִיא֩ (then he shall bring) אֶת־ (-) אֲשָׁמ֨וֹ (his guilt offering) לַֽיהוָ֜ה (to YHWH) אַ֧יִל (a ram) תָּמִ֣ים (unblemished) מִן־ (from) הַצֹּ֗אן (the flock), בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֛ (in your valuation) כֶּֽסֶף־ (of silver) שְׁקָלִ֥ים (shekels), בְּשֶֽׁקֶל־ (according to the shekel) הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ (of the sanctuary), לְאָשָֽׁם׃ (for a guilt offering). 16  וְאֵ֣ת (And for) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that which) חָטָ֨א (he has sinned) מִן־ (from), הַקֹּ֜דֶשׁ (the holy thing), יְשַׁלֵּ֗ם (he shall repay) וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמִֽישִׁתוֹ֙ (its fifth) יוֹסֵ֣ף (he shall add) עָלָ֔יו (on it), וְנָתַ֥ן (and he shall give) אֹת֖וֹ (it) לַכֹּהֵ֑ן (to the priest). וְהַכֹּהֵ֗ן (And the priest) יְכַפֵּ֥ר (shall make atonement) עָלָ֛יו (upon him) בְּאֵ֥יל (with the ram) הָאָשָׁ֖ם (of the guilt offering), וְנִסְלַ֥ח (and it shall be forgiven) לֽוֹ׃פ (for him).

17  וְאִם־ (And if) נֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ (a soul) כִּ֣י (-) תֶֽחֱטָ֔א (sins) וְעָֽשְׂתָ֗ה (and does) אַחַת֙ (one) מִכָּל־ (from all) מִצְוֺ֣ת (the commandments) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which) לֹ֣א (not) תֵעָשֶׂ֑ינָה (are to be done), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָדַ֥ע (has he known), וְאָשֵׁ֖ם (and he is guilty) וְנָשָׂ֥א (then he shall bear) עֲוֺנֽוֹ׃ (his iniquity). 18  וְ֠הֵבִיא (And he shall bring) אַ֣יִל (a ram) תָּמִ֧ים (unblemished) מִן־ (from) הַצֹּ֛אן (the flock), בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ (in your valuation), לְאָשָׁ֖ם (for a guilt offering), אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest). וְכִפֶּר֩ (And shall make atonement) עָלָ֨יו (upon him) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) עַ֣ל (regarding) שִׁגְגָת֧וֹ (his error) אֲשֶׁר־ (in which) שָׁגָ֛ג (he erred) וְה֥וּא (and he) לֹֽא־ (not) יָדַ֖ע (did know it), וְנִסְלַ֥ח (and it shall be forgiven) לֽוֹ׃ (for him). 19  אָשָׁ֖ם (A guilt offering) ה֑וּא (it is); אָשֹׁ֥ם (being guilty) אָשַׁ֖ם (he was guilty) לַיהוָֽה׃פ (against YHWH).
