1When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

1Ὡς οὖν ἔγνω ὁ Ἰησοῦς* ὅτι ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὅτι Ἰησοῦς πλείονας μαθητὰς ποιεῖ καὶ βαπτίζει ἢ Ἰωάννης

2(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

2καίτοιγε Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν ἀλλ’ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ

3He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

3ἀφῆκεν τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν

4And he must needs go through Samaria.

4Ἔδει δὲ αὐτὸν διέρχεσθαι διὰ τῆς Σαμαρείας

5Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

5ἔρχεται οὖν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένην Συχὰρ πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου ὃ ἔδωκεν Ἰακὼβ ‹τῷ› Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ

6Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

6ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πηγὴ τοῦ Ἰακώβ ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς κεκοπιακὼς ἐκ τῆς ὁδοιπορίας ἐκαθέζετο οὕτως ἐπὶ τῇ πηγῇ ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη

7There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

7Ἔρχεται γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Δός μοι πεῖν

8(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

8οἱ γὰρ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπεληλύθεισαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἵνα τροφὰς ἀγοράσωσιν

9Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

9Λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ἡ γυνὴ ἡ Σαμαρῖτις Πῶς σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ὢν παρ’ ἐμοῦ πεῖν αἰτεῖς γυναικὸς Σαμαρίτιδος οὔσης οὐ γὰρ συνχρῶνται Ἰουδαῖοι Σαμαρίταις

10Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

10Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Εἰ ᾔδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ λέγων σοι Δός μοι πεῖν σὺ ἂν ᾔτησας αὐτὸν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν

11The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

11Λέγει αὐτῷ ‹ἡ γυνή› Κύριε οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν

12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

12μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ

13Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

13Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Πᾶς ὁ πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου διψήσει πάλιν

14But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

14ὃς δ’ ἂν πίῃ ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ ἐγὼ δώσω αὐτῷ οὐ μὴ διψήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀλλὰ τὸ ὕδωρ ὃ δώσω αὐτῷ γενήσεται ἐν αὐτῷ πηγὴ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον

15The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

15Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνή Κύριε δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ ἵνα μὴ διψῶ μηδὲ διέρχωμαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν

16Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

16Λέγει αὐτῇ Ὕπαγε φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε

17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

17Ἀπεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν ‹αὐτῷ› Οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Καλῶς εἶπας* ὅτι Ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω

18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

18πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας

19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

19Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή Κύριε θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἶ σύ

20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

20οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν ὁ τόπος ὅπου προσκυνεῖν δεῖ

21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

21Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πίστευέ μοι γύναι ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ Πατρί

22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

22ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε ὃ οὐκ οἴδατε ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν ὃ οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν

23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

23ἀλλὰ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ Πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ καὶ γὰρ ὁ Πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν

24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

24Πνεῦμα ὁ Θεός καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας ‹αὐτὸν› ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν

25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

25Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή Οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται ὁ λεγόμενος Χριστός ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν ἅπαντα

26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

26Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ λαλῶν σοι

27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

27Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπεν Τί ζητεῖς ἢ Τί λαλεῖς μετ’ αὐτῆς

28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

28Ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς ἡ γυνὴ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις

29Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

29Δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέν μοι πάντα ὅσα* ἐποίησα μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός

30Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

30ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν

31In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

31Ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ῥαββί φάγε

32But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

32Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ βρῶσιν ἔχω φαγεῖν ἣν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε

33Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

33Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν

34Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

34Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν ἵνα ποιήσω* τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον

35Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

35οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστιν καὶ ὁ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται ἰδοὺ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας ὅτι λευκαί εἰσιν πρὸς θερισμόν ἤδη

36And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

36Ὁ θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἵνα ὁ σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ ὁ θερίζων

37And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

37ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ ὁ λόγος ἐστὶν ἀληθινὸς ὅτι Ἄλλος ἐστὶν ὁ σπείρων καὶ ἄλλος ὁ θερίζων

38I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

38ἐγὼ ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς θερίζειν ὃ οὐχ ὑμεῖς κεκοπιάκατε ἄλλοι κεκοπιάκασιν καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν κόπον αὐτῶν εἰσεληλύθατε

39And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

39Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαριτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρτυρούσης ὅτι Εἶπέν μοι πάντα ἃ ἐποίησα

40So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

40ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρῖται ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας

41And many more believed because of his own word;

41Καὶ πολλῷ πλείους ἐπίστευσαν διὰ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ

42And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

42τῇ τε γυναικὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὐκέτι διὰ τὴν σὴν λαλιὰν πιστεύομεν αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκηκόαμεν καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ Σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου

43Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

43Μετὰ δὲ τὰς δύο ἡμέρας ἐξῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν

44For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

44αὐτὸς γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐμαρτύρησεν ὅτι προφήτης ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ πατρίδι τιμὴν οὐκ ἔχει

45Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.

45ὅτε οὖν ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἐδέξαντο αὐτὸν οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι πάντα ἑωρακότες ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν

46So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

46Ἦλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὅπου ἐποίησεν τὸ ὕδωρ οἶνον Καὶ ἦν τις βασιλικὸς οὗ ὁ υἱὸς ἠσθένει ἐν Καφαρναούμ

47When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.

47οὗτος ἀκούσας ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἥκει ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἠρώτα ἵνα καταβῇ καὶ ἰάσηται αὐτοῦ τὸν υἱόν ἤμελλεν γὰρ ἀποθνήσκειν

48Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

48Εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτόν Ἐὰν μὴ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ἴδητε οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε

49The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.

49Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλικός Κύριε κατάβηθι πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν τὸ παιδίον μου

50Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.

50Λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πορεύου ὁ υἱός σου ζῇ Ἐπίστευσεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῷ λόγῳ ὃν εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐπορεύετο

51And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.

51ἤδη δὲ αὐτοῦ καταβαίνοντος οἱ δοῦλοι ‹αὐτοῦ› ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες ὅτι ὁ παῖς αὐτοῦ ζῇ

52Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

52Ἐπύθετο οὖν τὴν ὥραν παρ’ αὐτῶν ἐν ᾗ κομψότερον ἔσχεν εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἐχθὲς ὥραν ἑβδόμην ἀφῆκεν αὐτὸν ὁ πυρετός

53So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.

53Ἔγνω οὖν ὁ πατὴρ ὅτι [ἐν] ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐν ᾗ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὁ υἱός σου ζῇ καὶ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτὸς καὶ ἡ οἰκία αὐτοῦ ὅλη

54This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

54Τοῦτο δὲ πάλιν δεύτερον σημεῖον ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐλθὼν ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
