On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him,1One day as he was teaching the people in the temple and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came
and they spoke, saying to Him, "Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?"2and said to him: "Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?"
Jesus answered and said to them, "I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me:3He answered them, "I will also ask you a question. Tell me,
"Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?"4was the baptism of John from heaven or of human origin?"
They reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why did you not believe him?'5They discussed it among themselves: "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why didn't you believe him?'
"But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet."6But if we say, 'Of human origin,' all the people will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet."
So they answered that they did not know where it came from.7So they answered that they did not know its origin.
And Jesus said to them, "Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things."8And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
And He began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time.9Now he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went away for a long time.
"At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.10At harvest time he sent a servant to the farmers so that they might give him some fruit from the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
"And he proceeded to send another slave; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed.11He sent yet another servant, but they beat that one too, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.
"And he proceeded to send a third; and this one also they wounded and cast out.12And he sent yet a third, but they wounded this one too and threw him out.
"The owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.'13"Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What should I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.'
"But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, 'This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.'14"But when the tenant farmers saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, 'This is the heir. Let's kill him, so that the inheritance will be ours.'
"So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. "What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
"He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others." When they heard it, they said, "May it never be!"16He will come and kill those farmers and give the vineyard to others." But when they heard this they said, "That must never happen!"
But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone'?17But he looked at them and said, "Then what is the meaning of this Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?
"Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it falls, it will shatter him."
The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.19Then the scribes and the chief priests looked for a way to get their hands on him that very hour, because they knew he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.
So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.20They watched closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, so that they could catch him in what he said, to hand him over to the governor's rule and authority.
They questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth.21They questioned him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and you don't show partiality but teach truthfully the way of God.
"Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"22Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
But He detected their trickery and said to them,23But detecting their craftiness, he said to them,
"Show Me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's."24"Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?" "Caesar's," they said.
And He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."25"Well then," he told them, "give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
And they were unable to catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.26They were not able to catch him in what he said in public, and being amazed at his answer, they became silent.
Now there came to Him some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection),27Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came up and questioned him:
and they questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES, having a wife, AND HE IS CHILDLESS, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.28"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother has a wife, and dies childless, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother.
"Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless;29Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife and died without children.
and the second30Also the second
and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.31and the third took her. In the same way, all seven died and left no children.
"Finally the woman died also.32Finally, the woman died too.
"In the resurrection therefore, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her."33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For all seven had married her."
Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,34Jesus told them, "The children of this age marry and are given in marriage.
but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;35But those who are counted worthy to take part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.36For they can no longer die, because they are like angels and are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.
"But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.37Moses even indicated in the passage about the burning bush that the dead are raised, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.
"Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him."38He is not the God of the dead but of the living, because all are living to him."
Some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."39Some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you have spoken well."
For they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.40And they no longer dared to ask him anything.
Then He said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ is David's son?41Then he said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the son of David?
"For David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,42For David himself says in the Book of Psalms: The Lord declared to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand
UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'43until I make your enemies your footstool.'
"Therefore David calls Him 'Lord,' and how is He his son?"44David calls him 'Lord' how then can the Christ be his son?"
And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,45While all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,
"Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,46"Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.
who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."47They devour widows' houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher judgment."
