Corinthians 14
NASB Parallel GRK [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New American Standard Bible 1995Greek Study Bible
Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.1Διώκετε τὴν ἀγάπην ζηλοῦτε δὲ τὰ πνευματικά μᾶλλον δὲ ἵνα προφητεύητε
For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.2 γὰρ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις λαλεῖ ἀλλὰ Θεῷ οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἀκούει πνεύματι δὲ λαλεῖ μυστήρια
But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.3 δὲ προφητεύων ἀνθρώποις λαλεῖ οἰκοδομὴν καὶ παράκλησιν καὶ παραμυθίαν
One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.4 λαλῶν γλώσσῃ ἑαυτὸν οἰκοδομεῖ δὲ προφητεύων ἐκκλησίαν οἰκοδομεῖ
Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.5Θέλω δὲ πάντας ὑμᾶς λαλεῖν γλώσσαις μᾶλλον δὲ ἵνα προφητεύητε μείζων δὲ προφητεύων λαλῶν γλώσσαις ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ διερμηνεύῃ ἵνα ἐκκλησία οἰκοδομὴν λάβῃ
But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?6Νῦν δέ ἀδελφοί ἐὰν ἔλθω πρὸς ὑμᾶς γλώσσαις λαλῶν τί ὑμᾶς ὠφελήσω ἐὰν μὴ ὑμῖν λαλήσω ἐν ἀποκαλύψει ἐν γνώσει ἐν προφητείᾳ ‹ἐν› διδαχῇ
Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp?7ὅμως τὰ ἄψυχα φωνὴν διδόντα εἴτε αὐλὸς εἴτε κιθάρα ἐὰν διαστολὴν τοῖς φθόγγοις μὴ δῷ πῶς γνωσθήσεται τὸ αὐλούμενον τὸ κιθαριζόμενον
For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?8Καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἄδηλον σάλπιγξ φωνὴν δῷ τίς παρασκευάσεται εἰς πόλεμον
So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.9οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς διὰ τῆς γλώσσης ἐὰν μὴ εὔσημον λόγον δῶτε πῶς γνωσθήσεται τὸ λαλούμενον ἔσεσθε γὰρ εἰς ἀέρα λαλοῦντες
There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning.10Τοσαῦτα εἰ τύχοι γένη φωνῶν εἰσιν ἐν κόσμῳ καὶ οὐδὲν ἄφωνον
If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me.11ἐὰν οὖν μὴ εἰδῶ τὴν δύναμιν τῆς φωνῆς ἔσομαι τῷ λαλοῦντι βάρβαρος καὶ λαλῶν ἐν ἐμοὶ βάρβαρος
So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.12Οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐπεὶ ζηλωταί ἐστε πνευμάτων πρὸς τὴν οἰκοδομὴν τῆς ἐκκλησίας ζητεῖτε ἵνα περισσεύητε
Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.13Διὸ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ προσευχέσθω ἵνα διερμηνεύῃ
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.14ἐὰν γὰρ προσεύχωμαι γλώσσῃ τὸ πνεῦμά μου προσεύχεται δὲ νοῦς μου ἄκαρπός ἐστιν
What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.15Τί οὖν ἐστιν προσεύξομαι τῷ πνεύματι προσεύξομαι δὲ καὶ τῷ νοΐ ψαλῶ τῷ πνεύματι ψαλῶ δὲ καὶ τῷ νοΐ
Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the "Amen " at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?16ἐπεὶ ἐὰν εὐλογῇς [ἐν] πνεύματι ἀναπληρῶν τὸν τόπον τοῦ ἰδιώτου πῶς ἐρεῖ τὸ Ἀμήν ἐπὶ τῇ σῇ εὐχαριστίᾳ ἐπειδὴ τί λέγεις οὐκ οἶδεν
For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified.17σὺ μὲν γὰρ καλῶς εὐχαριστεῖς ἀλλ’ ἕτερος οὐκ οἰκοδομεῖται
I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;18Εὐχαριστῶ τῷ Θεῷ πάντων ὑμῶν μᾶλλον γλώσσαις λαλῶ
however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.19ἀλλὰ ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ θέλω πέντε λόγους τῷ νοΐ μου λαλῆσαι ἵνα καὶ ἄλλους κατηχήσω μυρίους λόγους ἐν γλώσσῃ
Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.20Ἀδελφοί μὴ παιδία γίνεσθε ταῖς φρεσίν ἀλλὰ τῇ κακίᾳ νηπιάζετε ταῖς δὲ φρεσὶν τέλειοι γίνεσθε
In the Law it is written, "BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME," says the Lord.21ἐν τῷ νόμῳ γέγραπται ὅτι Ἐν ἑτερογλώσσοις καὶ ἐν χείλεσιν ἑτέρων λαλήσω τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ καὶ οὐδ’ οὕτως εἰσακούσονταί μου λέγει Κύριος
So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.22Ὥστε αἱ γλῶσσαι εἰς σημεῖόν εἰσιν οὐ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν ἀλλὰ τοῖς ἀπίστοις δὲ προφητεία οὐ τοῖς ἀπίστοις ἀλλὰ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν
Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?23Ἐὰν οὖν συνέλθῃ ἐκκλησία ὅλη ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ πάντες λαλῶσιν γλώσσαις εἰσέλθωσιν δὲ ἰδιῶται ἄπιστοι οὐκ ἐροῦσιν ὅτι μαίνεσθε
But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;24ἐὰν δὲ πάντες προφητεύωσιν εἰσέλθῃ δέ τις ἄπιστος ἰδιώτης ἐλέγχεται ὑπὸ πάντων ἀνακρίνεται ὑπὸ πάντων
the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.25τὰ κρυπτὰ τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ φανερὰ γίνεται καὶ οὕτως πεσὼν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον προσκυνήσει τῷ Θεῷ ἀπαγγέλλων ὅτι Ὄντως Θεὸς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστιν
What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.26Τί οὖν ἐστιν ἀδελφοί ὅταν συνέρχησθε ἕκαστος ψαλμὸν ἔχει διδαχὴν ἔχει ἀποκάλυψιν ἔχει γλῶσσαν ἔχει ἑρμηνείαν ἔχει πάντα πρὸς οἰκοδομὴν γινέσθω
If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;27Εἴτε γλώσσῃ τις λαλεῖ κατὰ δύο τὸ πλεῖστον τρεῖς καὶ ἀνὰ μέρος καὶ εἷς διερμηνευέτω
but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.28ἐὰν δὲ μὴ διερμηνευτής σιγάτω ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ἑαυτῷ δὲ λαλείτω καὶ τῷ Θεῷ
Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment.29Προφῆται δὲ δύο τρεῖς λαλείτωσαν καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι διακρινέτωσαν
But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent.30ἐὰν δὲ ἄλλῳ ἀποκαλυφθῇ καθημένῳ πρῶτος σιγάτω
For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;31δύνασθε γὰρ καθ’ ἕνα πάντες προφητεύειν ἵνα πάντες μανθάνωσιν καὶ πάντες παρακαλῶνται
and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;32καὶ πνεύματα προφητῶν προφήταις ὑποτάσσεται
for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.33οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἀκαταστασίας Θεὸς ἀλλὰ εἰρήνης Ὡς ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις τῶν ἁγίων
The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.34αἱ γυναῖκες ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις σιγάτωσαν οὐ γὰρ ἐπιτρέπεται αὐταῖς λαλεῖν ἀλλὰ ὑποτασσέσθωσαν καθὼς καὶ νόμος λέγει
If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.35εἰ δέ τι μαθεῖν θέλουσιν ἐν οἴκῳ τοὺς ἰδίους ἄνδρας ἐπερωτάτωσαν αἰσχρὸν γάρ ἐστιν γυναικὶ λαλεῖν ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ
Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only?36 ἀφ’ ὑμῶν λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς ὑμᾶς μόνους κατήντησεν
If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's commandment.37Εἴ τις δοκεῖ προφήτης εἶναι πνευματικός ἐπιγινωσκέτω γράφω ὑμῖν ὅτι Κυρίου ἐστὶν ἐντολή
But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.38εἰ δέ τις ἀγνοεῖ ἀγνοεῖται
Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues.39Ὥστε ἀδελφοί μου ζηλοῦτε τὸ προφητεύειν καὶ τὸ λαλεῖν μὴ κωλύετε γλώσσαις
But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.40πάντα δὲ εὐσχημόνως καὶ κατὰ τάξιν γινέσθω
