After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias).1After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias).
A large crowd was following him because they were observing the miraculous signs he was performing on the sick.2And a huge crowd was following Him because they saw the signs that He was performing by healing the sick.
So Jesus went on up the mountainside and sat down there with his disciples.3So Jesus went up a mountain and sat down there with His disciples.
(Now the Jewish feast of the Passover was near.)4Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near.
Then Jesus, when he looked up and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, said to Philip, "Where can we buy bread so that these people may eat?"5Therefore, when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward Him, He asked Philip, "Where will we buy bread so these people can eat?"
(Now Jesus said this to test him, for he knew what he was going to do.)6He asked this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was going to do.
Philip replied, "Two hundred silver coins worth of bread would not be enough for them, for each one to get a little."7Philip answered, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn't be enough for each of them to have a little."
One of Jesus' disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him,8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, "
"Here is a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what good are these for so many people?" 9There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish--but what are they for so many?"
Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." (Now there was a lot of grass in that place.) So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.10Then Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, so they sat down. The men numbered about 5,000.
Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed the bread to those who were seated. He then did the same with the fish, as much as they wanted.11Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were seated--so also with the fish, as much as they wanted.
When they were all satisfied, Jesus said to his disciples, "Gather up the broken pieces that are left over, so that nothing is wasted."12When they were full, He told His disciples, "Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted."
So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves left over by the people who had eaten. 13So they collected them and filled 12 baskets with the pieces from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten.
Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus performed, they began to say to one another, "This is certainly the Prophet who is to come into the world."14When the people saw the sign He had done, they said, "This really is the Prophet who was to come into the world!"
Then Jesus, because he knew they were going to come and seize him by force to make him king, withdrew again up the mountainside alone. 15Therefore, when Jesus knew that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He withdrew again to the mountain by Himself.
Now when evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,16When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
got into a boat, and started to cross the lake to Capernaum. (It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.)17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them.
By now a strong wind was blowing and the sea was getting rough.18Then a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn.
Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they caught sight of Jesus walking on the lake, approaching the boat, and they were frightened.19After they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid.
But he said to them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."20But He said to them, "It is I. Don't be afraid!"
Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land where they had been heading. 21Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading.
The next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the lake realized that only one small boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.22The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea knew there had been only one boat. They also knew that Jesus had not boarded the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone off alone.
But some boats from Tiberias came to shore near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.23Some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord gave thanks.
So when the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 24When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You get here?"
Jesus replied, "I tell you the solemn truth, you are looking for me not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate all the loaves of bread you wanted.26Jesus answered, "I assure you: You are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
Do not work for the food that disappears, but for the food that remains to eternal life--the food which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him." 27Don't work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal of approval on Him.""
So then they said to him, "What must we do to accomplish the deeds God requires?"28What can we do to perform the works of God?" they asked.
Jesus replied, "This is the deed God requires--to believe in the one whom he sent."29Jesus replied, "This is the work of God--that you believe in the One He has sent.""
So they said to him, "Then what miraculous sign will you perform, so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?30What sign then are You going to do so we may see and believe You?" they asked. "What are You going to perform?
Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" 31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat."
Then Jesus told them, "I tell you the solemn truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven.32Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Moses didn't give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the real bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."33For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread all the time!" 34Then they said, "Sir, give us this bread always!"
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.35"I am the bread of life," Jesus told them. "No one who comes to Me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again.
But I told you that you have seen me and still do not believe.36But as I told you, you've seen Me, and yet you do not believe.
Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never send away.37Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.
For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Now this is the will of the one who sent me--that I should not lose one person of every one he has given me, but raise them all up at the last day.39This is the will of Him who sent Me: that I should lose none of those He has given Me but should raise them up on the last day.
For this is the will of my Father--for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." 40For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."
Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began complaining about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven,"41Therefore the Jews started complaining about Him because He said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."
and they said, "Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"42They were saying, "Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, I have come down from heaven?"
Jesus replied, "Do not complain about me to one another.43Jesus answered them, "Stop complaining among yourselves.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.44No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.
It is written in the prophets, 'And they will all be taught by God.' Everyone who hears and learns from the Father comes to me.45It is written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father comes to Me--
(Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God--he has seen the Father.)46not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God. He has seen the Father.
I tell you the solemn truth, the one who believes has eternal life.47"I assure you: Anyone who believes has eternal life.
I am the bread of life.48I am the bread of life.
Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
This is the bread that has come down from heaven, so that a person may eat from it and not die.50This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh."
Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began to argue with one another, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"52At that, the Jews argued among themselves, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?"
Jesus said to them, "I tell you the solemn truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves.53So Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves.
The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.54Anyone who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day,
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.55because My flesh is real food and My blood is real drink.
The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me, and I in him.56The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood lives in Me, and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who consumes me will live because of me.57Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread your ancestors ate, but then later died. The one who eats this bread will live forever." 58This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the manna your fathers ate--and they died. The one who eats this bread will live forever."
Jesus said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.59He said these things while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said, "This is a difficult saying! Who can understand it?"60Therefore, when many of His disciples heard this, they said, "This teaching is hard! Who can accept it?"
When Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining about this, he said to them, "Does this cause you to be offended?61Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were complaining about this, asked them, "Does this offend you?
Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?62Then what if you were to observe the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?
The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.63The Spirit is the One who gives life. The flesh doesn't help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
But there are some of you who do not believe." (For Jesus had already known from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)64But there are some among you who don't believe." (For Jesus knew from the beginning those who would not believe and the one who would betray Him.)
So Jesus added, "Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come." 65He said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted to him by the Father."
After this many of his disciples quit following him and did not accompany him any longer.66From that moment many of His disciples turned back and no longer accompanied Him.
So Jesus said to the twelve, "You don't want to go away too, do you?"67Therefore Jesus said to the Twelve, "You don't want to go away too, do you?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.68Simon Peter answered, "Lord, who will we go to? You have the words of eternal life.
We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God!"69We have come to believe and know that You are the Holy One of God!"
Jesus replied, "Didn't I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is the devil?"70Jesus replied to them, "Didn't I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is the Devil!"
(Now he said this about Judas son of Simon Iscariot, for Judas, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.) 71He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray Him.
