Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it.1He entered Jericho and was passing through.
Now a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.2And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.
He was trying to get a look at Jesus, but being a short man he could not see over the crowd.3Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, because Jesus was going to pass that way.4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.
And when Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, because I must stay at your house today."5When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house."
So he came down quickly and welcomed Jesus joyfully.6And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly.
And when the people saw it, they all complained, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."7When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."
But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, half of my possessions I now give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!"8Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much."
Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this household, because he too is a son of Abraham!9And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." 10"For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
While the people were listening to these things, Jesus proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.11While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
Therefore he said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.12So He said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.
And he summoned ten of his slaves, gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Do business with these until I come back.'13"And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, 'Do business with this until I come back.'
But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to be king over us!'14"But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.'
When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned these slaves to whom he had given the money. He wanted to know how much they had earned by trading.15"When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done.
So the first one came before him and said, 'Sir, your mina has made ten minas more.'16"The first appeared, saying, 'Master, your mina has made ten minas more.'
And the king said to him, 'Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you will have authority over ten cities.'17"And he said to him, 'Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.'
Then the second one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has made five minas.'18"The second came, saying, 'Your mina, master, has made five minas.'
So the king said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.'19"And he said to him also, 'And you are to be over five cities.'
Then another slave came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina that I put away for safekeeping in a piece of cloth.20"Another came, saying, 'Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief;
For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.'21for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.'
The king said to him, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! So you knew, did you, that I was a severe man, withdrawing what I didn't deposit and reaping what I didn't sow?22"He said to him, 'By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
Why then didn't you put my money in the bank, so that when I returned I could have collected it with interest?'23'Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?'
And he said to his attendants, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten.'24"Then he said to the bystanders, 'Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.'
But they said to him, 'Sir, he has ten minas already!'25"And they said to him, 'Master, he has ten minas already.'
I tell you that everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.26"I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.
But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, bring them here and slaughter them in front of me!'" 27"But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence."
After Jesus had said this, he continued on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Now when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,29When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,
telling them, "Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.30saying, "Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say, 'The Lord needs it.'"31"If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' you shall say, 'The Lord has need of it.'"
So those who were sent ahead found it exactly as he had told them.32So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying that colt?"33As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?"
They replied, "The Lord needs it."34They said, "The Lord has need of it."
Then they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and had Jesus get on it.35They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it.
As he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.36As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road.
As he approached the road leading down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen:37As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,
"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"38shouting: "BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples."
He answered, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the very stones will cry out!" 40But Jesus answered, "I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!"
Now when Jesus approached and saw the city, he wept over it,41When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,
saying, "If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.42saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side.43"For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side,
They will demolish you--you and your children within your walls--and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God." 44and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation."
Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling things there,45Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling,
saying to them, "It is written, 'My house will be a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of robbers!" 46saying to them, "It is written, 'AND MY HOUSE SHALL BE A HOUSE OF PRAYER,' but you have made it a ROBBERS' DEN."
Jesus was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate him,47And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him,
but they could not find a way to do it, for all the people hung on his words. 48and they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to every word He said.
