After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day he was born.1At last Job spoke, and he cursed the day of his birth.
Job spoke up and said: 2He said:
"Let the day on which I was born perish, and the night that said, 'A man has been conceived!' 3“Let the day of my birth be erased, and the night I was conceived.
That day--let it be darkness; let not God on high regard it, nor let light shine on it! 4Let that day be turned to darkness. Let it be lost even to God on high, and let no light shine on it.
Let darkness and the deepest shadow claim it; let a cloud settle on it; let whatever blackens the day terrify it! 5Let the darkness and utter gloom claim that day for its own. Let a black cloud overshadow it, and let the darkness terrify it.
That night--let darkness seize it; let it not be included among the days of the year; let it not enter among the number of the months! 6Let that night be blotted off the calendar, never again to be counted among the days of the year, never again to appear among the months.
Indeed, let that night be barren; let no shout of joy penetrate it! 7Let that night be childless. Let it have no joy.
Let those who curse the day curse it--those who are prepared to rouse Leviathan. 8Let those who are experts at cursing— whose cursing could rouse Leviathan — curse that day.
Let its morning stars be darkened; let it wait for daylight but find none, nor let it see the first rays of dawn, 9Let its morning stars remain dark. Let it hope for light, but in vain; may it never see the morning light.
because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb on me, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes! 10Curse that day for failing to shut my mother’s womb, for letting me be born to see all this trouble.
"Why did I not die at birth, and why did I not expire as I came out of the womb? 11“Why wasn’t I born dead? Why didn’t I die as I came from the womb?
Why did the knees welcome me, and why were there two breasts that I might nurse at them? 12Why was I laid on my mother’s lap? Why did she nurse me at her breasts?
For now I would be lying down and would be quiet, I would be asleep and then at peace 13Had I died at birth, I would now be at peace. I would be asleep and at rest.
with kings and counselors of the earth who built for themselves places now desolate, 14I would rest with the world’s kings and prime ministers, whose great buildings now lie in ruins.
or with princes who possessed gold, who filled their palaces with silver. 15I would rest with princes, rich in gold, whose palaces were filled with silver.
Or why was I not buried like a stillborn infant, like infants who have never seen the light? 16Why wasn’t I buried like a stillborn child, like a baby who never lives to see the light?
There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest. 17For in death the wicked cause no trouble, and the weary are at rest.
There the prisoners relax together; they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. 18Even captives are at ease in death, with no guards to curse them.
Small and great are there, and the slave is free from his master. 19Rich and poor are both there, and the slave is free from his master.
"Why does God give light to one who is in misery, and life to those whose soul is bitter, 20“Oh, why give light to those in misery, and life to those who are bitter?
to those who wait for death that does not come, and search for it more than for hidden treasures, 21They long for death, and it won’t come. They search for death more eagerly than for hidden treasure.
who rejoice even to jubilation, and are exultant when they find the grave? 22They’re filled with joy when they finally die, and rejoice when they find the grave.
Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, and whom God has hedged in? 23Why is life given to those with no future, those God has surrounded with difficulties?
For my sighing comes in place of my food, and my groanings flow forth like water. 24I cannot eat for sighing; my groans pour out like water.
For the very thing I dreaded has happened to me, and what I feared has come upon me. 25What I always feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true.
I have no ease, I have no quietness; I cannot rest; turmoil has come upon me." 26I have no peace, no quietness. I have no rest; only trouble comes.”
