Psalm 77
NET BibleNew Living Translation
For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of Asaph. I will cry out to God and call for help! I will cry out to God and he will pay attention to me. 1I cry out to God; yes, I shout. Oh, that God would listen to me!
In my time of trouble I sought the Lord. I kept my hand raised in prayer throughout the night. I refused to be comforted. 2When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted.
I said, "I will remember God while I groan; I will think about him while my strength leaves me." (Selah) 3I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Interlude
You held my eyelids open; I was troubled and could not speak. 4You don’t let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray!
I thought about the days of old, about ancient times. 5I think of the good old days, long since ended,
I said, "During the night I will remember the song I once sang; I will think very carefully." I tried to make sense of what was happening. 6when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the difference now.
I asked, "Will the Lord reject me forever? Will he never again show me his favor? 7Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me?
Has his loyal love disappeared forever? Has his promise failed forever? 8Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed?
Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has his anger stifled his compassion?" 9Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion? Interlude
Then I said, "I am sickened by the thought that the sovereign One might become inactive. 10And I said, “This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.”
I will remember the works of the LORD. Yes, I will remember the amazing things you did long ago! 11But then I recall all you have done, O LORD; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
I will think about all you have done; I will reflect upon your deeds!" 12They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.
O God, your deeds are extraordinary! What god can compare to our great God? 13O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you?
You are the God who does amazing things; you have revealed your strength among the nations. 14You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations.
You delivered your people by your strength--the children of Jacob and Joseph. (Selah) 15By your strong arm, you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Interlude
The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and trembled. Yes, the depths of the sea shook with fear. 16When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to its very depths.
The clouds poured down rain; the skies thundered. Yes, your arrows flashed about. 17The clouds poured down rain; the thunder rumbled in the sky. Your arrows of lightning flashed.
Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. 18Your thunder roared from the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world! The earth trembled and shook.
You walked through the sea; you passed through the surging waters, but left no footprints. 19Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there!
You led your people like a flock of sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron. 20You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds.
