At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.1Ἀνὴρ δέ τις ἐν Καισαρείᾳ ὀνόματι Κορνήλιος ἑκατοντάρχης ἐκ σπείρης τῆς καλουμένης Ἰταλικῆς
He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.2εὐσεβὴς καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν Θεὸν σὺν παντὶ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ ποιῶν ἐλεημοσύνας πολλὰς τῷ λαῷ καὶ δεόμενος τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ παντός
One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!"3εἶδεν ἐν ὁράματι φανερῶς ὡσεὶ περὶ ὥραν ἐνάτην τῆς ἡμέρας ἄγγελον τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσελθόντα πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἰπόντα αὐτῷ Κορνήλιε
Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.4 δὲ ἀτενίσας αὐτῷ καὶ ἔμφοβος γενόμενος εἶπεν Τί ἐστιν Κύριε Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Αἱ προσευχαί σου καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἀνέβησαν εἰς μνημόσυνον ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Θεοῦ
Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.5καὶ νῦν πέμψον ἄνδρας εἰς Ἰόππην καὶ μετάπεμψαι Σίμωνά τινα ὃς ἐπικαλεῖται Πέτρος
He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea."6οὗτος ξενίζεται παρά τινι Σίμωνι βυρσεῖ ἐστιν οἰκία παρὰ θάλασσαν {οὗτος λαλήσει σοι τί σε δεῖ ποιεῖν}
When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.7Ὡς δὲ ἀπῆλθεν ἄγγελος λαλῶν αὐτῷ φωνήσας δύο τῶν οἰκετῶν καὶ στρατιώτην εὐσεβῆ τῶν προσκαρτερούντων αὐτῷ
He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.8καὶ ἐξηγησάμενος ἅπαντα αὐτοῖς ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν Ἰόππην
About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.9Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ὁδοιπορούντων ἐκείνων καὶ τῇ πόλει ἐγγιζόντων ἀνέβη Πέτρος ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα προσεύξασθαι περὶ ὥραν ἕκτην
He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.10ἐγένετο δὲ πρόσπεινος καὶ ἤθελεν γεύσασθαι παρασκευαζόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἐγένετο ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἔκστασις
He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.11καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγμένον καὶ καταβαῖνον σκεῦός τι ὡς ὀθόνην μεγάλην τέσσαρσιν ἀρχαῖς καθιέμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.12ἐν ὑπῆρχεν πάντα τὰ τετράποδα καὶ ἑρπετὰ τῆς γῆς καὶ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."13καὶ ἐγένετο φωνὴ πρὸς αὐτόν Ἀναστάς Πέτρε θῦσον καὶ φάγε
"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."14 δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν Μηδαμῶς Κύριε ὅτι οὐδέποτε ἔφαγον πᾶν κοινὸν καὶ ἀκάθαρτον
The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."15Καὶ φωνὴ πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου πρὸς αὐτόν Θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου
This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.16Τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τρίς καὶ εὐθὺς ἀνελήμφθη τὸ σκεῦος εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν
While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate.17Ὡς δὲ ἐν ἑαυτῷ διηπόρει Πέτρος τί ἂν εἴη τὸ ὅραμα εἶδεν ἰδοὺ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι ὑπὸ τοῦ Κορνηλίου διερωτήσαντες τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ Σίμωνος ἐπέστησαν ἐπὶ τὸν πυλῶνα
They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.18καὶ φωνήσαντες ἐπυνθάνοντο εἰ Σίμων ἐπικαλούμενος Πέτρος ἐνθάδε ξενίζεται
While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you.19Τοῦ δὲ Πέτρου διενθυμουμένου περὶ τοῦ ὁράματος εἶπεν ‹αὐτῷ› τὸ Πνεῦμα Ἰδοὺ ἄνδρες [τρεῖς] ζητοῦντές σε
So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them."20ἀλλὰ ἀναστὰς κατάβηθι καὶ πορεύου σὺν αὐτοῖς μηδὲν διακρινόμενος ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀπέσταλκα αὐτούς
Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?"21Καταβὰς δὲ Πέτρος πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας {τοῦς ἀπεσταλμένους ἀπὸ τοῦ Κορνηλίου πρὸς αὑτόν} εἶπεν Ἰδοὺ ἐγώ εἰμι ὃν ζητεῖτε τίς αἰτία δι’ ἣν πάρεστε
The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say."22Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Κορνήλιος ἑκατοντάρχης ἀνὴρ δίκαιος καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν Θεὸν μαρτυρούμενός τε ὑπὸ ὅλου τοῦ ἔθνους τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐχρηματίσθη ὑπὸ ἀγγέλου ἁγίου μεταπέμψασθαί σε εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ῥήματα παρὰ σοῦ
Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along.23Εἰσκαλεσάμενος οὖν αὐτοὺς ἐξένισεν Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ἀναστὰς ἐξῆλθεν σὺν αὐτοῖς καί τινες τῶν ἀδελφῶν τῶν ἀπὸ Ἰόππης συνῆλθον αὐτῷ
The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.24Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν Καισάρειαν δὲ Κορνήλιος ἦν προσδοκῶν αὐτοὺς συνκαλεσάμενος τοὺς συγγενεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἀναγκαίους φίλους
As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.25Ὡς δὲ ἐγένετο τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν τὸν Πέτρον συναντήσας αὐτῷ Κορνήλιος πεσὼν ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας προσεκύνησεν
But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself."26 δὲ Πέτρος ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν λέγων Ἀνάστηθι καὶ ἐγὼ αὐτὸς ἄνθρωπός εἰμι
While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.27Καὶ συνομιλῶν αὐτῷ εἰσῆλθεν καὶ εὑρίσκει συνεληλυθότας πολλούς
He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.28ἔφη τε πρὸς αὐτούς Ὑμεῖς ἐπίστασθε ὡς ἀθέμιτόν ἐστιν ἀνδρὶ Ἰουδαίῳ κολλᾶσθαι προσέρχεσθαι ἀλλοφύλῳ κἀμοὶ Θεὸς ἔδειξεν μηδένα κοινὸν ἀκάθαρτον λέγειν ἄνθρωπον
So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?"29διὸ καὶ ἀναντιρρήτως ἦλθον μεταπεμφθείς πυνθάνομαι οὖν Τίνι λόγῳ μετεπέμψασθέ με
Cornelius answered: "Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me30Καὶ Κορνήλιος ἔφη Ἀπὸ τετάρτης ἡμέρας μέχρι ταύτης τῆς ὥρας ἤμην τὴν ἐνάτην προσευχόμενος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ μου καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ἔστη ἐνώπιόν μου ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ
and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.31καὶ φησίν Κορνήλιε εἰσηκούσθη σου προσευχὴ καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἐμνήσθησαν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ
Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.'32πέμψον οὖν εἰς Ἰόππην καὶ μετακάλεσαι Σίμωνα ὃς ἐπικαλεῖται Πέτρος οὗτος ξενίζεται ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος βυρσέως παρὰ θάλασσαν
So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us."33Ἐξαυτῆς οὖν ἔπεμψα πρὸς σέ σύ τε καλῶς ἐποίησας παραγενόμενος νῦν οὖν πάντες ἡμεῖς ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ πάρεσμεν ἀκοῦσαι πάντα τὰ προστεταγμένα σοι ὑπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου
Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism34Ἀνοίξας δὲ Πέτρος τὸ στόμα εἶπεν Ἐπ’ ἀληθείας καταλαμβάνομαι ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν προσωπολήμπτης Θεός
but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.35ἀλλ’ ἐν παντὶ ἔθνει φοβούμενος αὐτὸν καὶ ἐργαζόμενος δικαιοσύνην δεκτὸς αὐτῷ ἐστιν
You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.36τὸν λόγον ὃν ἀπέστειλεν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ εὐαγγελιζόμενος εἰρήνην διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ οὗτός ἐστιν πάντων Κύριος
You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached--37Ὑμεῖς οἴδατε τὸ γενόμενον ῥῆμα καθ’ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας μετὰ τὸ βάπτισμα ἐκήρυξεν Ἰωάννης
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.38Ἰησοῦν τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέθ ὡς ἔχρισεν αὐτὸν Θεὸς Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ καὶ δυνάμει ὃς διῆλθεν εὐεργετῶν καὶ ἰώμενος πάντας τοὺς καταδυναστευομένους ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου ὅτι Θεὸς ἦν μετ’ αὐτοῦ
"We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,39Καὶ ἡμεῖς μάρτυρες πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν ἔν τε τῇ χώρᾳ τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ [ἐν] Ἰερουσαλήμ ὃν καὶ ἀνεῖλαν κρεμάσαντες ἐπὶ ξύλου
but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.40τοῦτον Θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐν τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν ἐμφανῆ γενέσθαι
He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.41οὐ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ ἀλλὰ μάρτυσιν τοῖς προκεχειροτονημένοις ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῖν οἵτινες συνεφάγομεν καὶ συνεπίομεν αὐτῷ μετὰ τὸ ἀναστῆναι αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν
He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.42καὶ παρήγγειλεν ἡμῖν κηρύξαι τῷ λαῷ καὶ διαμαρτύρασθαι ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὡρισμένος ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ Κριτὴς ζώντων καὶ νεκρῶν
All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."43τούτῳ πάντες οἱ προφῆται μαρτυροῦσιν ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν λαβεῖν διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ πάντα τὸν πιστεύοντα εἰς αὐτόν
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.44Ἔτι λαλοῦντος τοῦ Πέτρου τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα ἐπέπεσεν τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντας τὸν λόγον
The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.45καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς πιστοὶ ὅσοι συνῆλθαν τῷ Πέτρῳ ὅτι καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη δωρεὰ τοῦ Ἁγίου (τοῦ) Πνεύματος ἐκκέχυται
For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,46ἤκουον γὰρ αὐτῶν λαλούντων γλώσσαις καὶ μεγαλυνόντων τὸν Θεόν Τότε ἀπεκρίθη Πέτρος
"Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."47Μήτι τὸ ὕδωρ δύναται κωλῦσαί τις τοῦ μὴ βαπτισθῆναι τούτους οἵτινες τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον ἔλαβον ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς
So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.48προσέταξεν δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ βαπτισθῆναι τότε ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἐπιμεῖναι ἡμέρας τινάς
