For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. My God, whom I praise, do not remain silent,1For the music director, a psalm of David. O God whom I praise, do not ignore me!
for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues.2For they say cruel and deceptive things to me; they lie to me.
With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.3They surround me and say hateful things; they attack me for no reason.
In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.4They repay my love with accusations, but I continue to pray.
They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.5They repay me evil for good, and hate for love.
Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand.6Appoint an evil man to testify against him! May an accuser stand at his right side!
When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him.7When he is judged, he will be found guilty! Then his prayer will be regarded as sinful.
May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.8May his days be few! May another take his job!
May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.9May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow!
May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes.10May his children roam around begging, asking for handouts as they leave their ruined home!
May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.11May the creditor seize all he owns! May strangers loot his property!
May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children.12May no one show him kindness! May no one have compassion on his fatherless children!
May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation.13May his descendants be cut off! May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives!
May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.14May his ancestors' sins be remembered by the LORD! May his mother's sin not be forgotten!
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth.15May the LORD be constantly aware of them, and cut off the memory of his children from the earth!
For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted.16For he never bothered to show kindness; he harassed the oppressed and needy, and killed the disheartened.
He loved to pronounce a curse-- may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing-- may it be far from him.17He loved to curse others, so those curses have come upon him. He had no desire to bless anyone, so he has experienced no blessings.
He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil.18He made cursing a way of life, so curses poured into his stomach like water and seeped into his bones like oil.
May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him.19May a curse attach itself to him, like a garment one puts on, or a belt one wears continually!
May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.20May the LORD repay my accusers in this way, those who say evil things about me!
But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.21O sovereign LORD, intervene on my behalf for the sake of your reputation! Because your loyal love is good, deliver me!
For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.22For I am oppressed and needy, and my heart beats violently within me.
I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.23I am fading away like a shadow at the end of the day; I am shaken off like a locust.
My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt.24I am so starved my knees shake; I have turned into skin and bones.
I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads.25I am disdained by them. When they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love.26Help me, O LORD my God! Because you are faithful to me, deliver me!
Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it.27Then they will realize this is your work, and that you, LORD, have accomplished it.
While they curse, may you bless; may those who attack me be put to shame, but may your servant rejoice.28They curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, but your servant will rejoice.
May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.29My accusers will be covered with shame, and draped in humiliation as if it were a robe.
With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.30I will thank the LORD profusely, in the middle of a crowd I will praise him,
For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.31because he stands at the right hand of the needy, to deliver him from those who threaten his life.
