There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.1At that time some of those present told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?2To this He replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this fate?
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.3No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem?4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem?
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”5No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
He also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.6Then Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.
Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’7So he said to the keeper of the vineyard, ‘Look, for the past three years I have come to search for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Therefore cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.8‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone again this year, until I dig around it and fertilize it.
And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’ ”9If it bears fruit next year, fine. But if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.10One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,
And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up.11and a woman there had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was hunched over and could not stand up straight.
But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.”12When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your disability.”
And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.13Then He placed His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began to glorify God.
But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.”14But the synagogue leader was indignant that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. “There are six days for work,” he told the crowd. “So come and be healed on those days and not on the Sabbath.”
The Lord then answered him and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it?15“You hypocrites!” the Lord replied, “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it to water?
So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?”16Then should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be released from her bondage on the Sabbath day?”
And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.17When Jesus said this, all His adversaries were humiliated. And the whole crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things He was doing.
Then He said, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?18Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it?
It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”19It is like a mustard seed that a man tossed into his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”
And again He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God?20Again He asked, “To what can I compare the kingdom of God?
It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.”21It is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.”
And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.22Then Jesus traveled throughout the towns and villages, teaching as He made His way toward Jerusalem.
Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them,23“Lord,” someone asked Him, “will only a few people be saved?” Jesus answered,
“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.24“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.
When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’25After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’
then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’26Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’
But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’27And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’
There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out.28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves are thrown out.
They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God.29People will come from east and west and north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.
And indeed there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.”30And indeed, some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”
On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.”31At that very hour, some Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod wants to kill You.”
And He said to them, “Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’32But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I will keep driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach My goal.’
Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.33Nevertheless, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day, for it is not admissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!
See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ ”35Look, your house is left to you desolate. And I tell you that you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”
