To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph. I cried out to God with my voice— To God with my voice; And He gave ear to me.1For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of Asaph. I will cry out to God and call for help! I will cry out to God and he will pay attention to me.
In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing; My soul refused to be comforted.2In my time of trouble I sought the Lord. I kept my hand raised in prayer throughout the night. I refused to be comforted.
I remembered God, and was troubled; I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah3I said, "I will remember God while I groan; I will think about him while my strength leaves me." (Selah)
You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.4You held my eyelids open; I was troubled and could not speak.
I have considered the days of old, The years of ancient times.5I thought about the days of old, about ancient times.
I call to remembrance my song in the night; I meditate within my heart, And my spirit makes diligent search.6I said, "During the night I will remember the song I once sang; I will think very carefully." I tried to make sense of what was happening.
Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more?7I asked, "Will the Lord reject me forever? Will he never again show me his favor?
Has His mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed forevermore?8Has his loyal love disappeared forever? Has his promise failed forever?
Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah9Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has his anger stifled his compassion?"
And I said, “This is my anguish; But I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.”10Then I said, "I am sickened by the thought that the sovereign One might become inactive.
I will remember the works of the LORD; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.11I will remember the works of the LORD. Yes, I will remember the amazing things you did long ago!
I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds.12I will think about all you have done; I will reflect upon your deeds!"
Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Who is so great a God as our God?13O God, your deeds are extraordinary! What god can compare to our great God?
You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples.14You are the God who does amazing things; you have revealed your strength among the nations.
You have with Your arm redeemed Your people, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah15You delivered your people by your strength--the children of Jacob and Joseph. (Selah)
The waters saw You, O God; The waters saw You, they were afraid; The depths also trembled.16The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and trembled. Yes, the depths of the sea shook with fear.
The clouds poured out water; The skies sent out a sound; Your arrows also flashed about.17The clouds poured down rain; the skies thundered. Yes, your arrows flashed about.
The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind; The lightnings lit up the world; The earth trembled and shook.18Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook.
Your way was in the sea, Your path in the great waters, And Your footsteps were not known.19You walked through the sea; you passed through the surging waters, but left no footprints.
You led Your people like a flock By the hand of Moses and Aaron.20You led your people like a flock of sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
