NLT Parallel NASB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNew American Standard Bible 1995
“Suppose a man marries a woman but she does not please him. Having discovered something wrong with her, he writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house.1"When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house,
When she leaves his house, she is free to marry another man.2and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man's wife,
But if the second husband also turns against her, writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away, or if he dies,3and if the latter husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife,
the first husband may not marry her again, for she has been defiled. That would be detestable to the LORD. You must not bring guilt upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as a special possession.4then her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance.
“A newly married man must not be drafted into the army or be given any other official responsibilities. He must be free to spend one year at home, bringing happiness to the wife he has married.5"When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home one year and shall give happiness to his wife whom he has taken.
“It is wrong to take a set of millstones, or even just the upper millstone, as security for a loan, for the owner uses it to make a living.6"No one shall take a handmill or an upper millstone in pledge, for he would be taking a life in pledge.
“If anyone kidnaps a fellow Israelite and treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. In this way, you will purge the evil from among you.7"If a man is caught kidnapping any of his countrymen of the sons of Israel, and he deals with him violently or sells him, then that thief shall die; so you shall purge the evil from among you.
“In all cases involving serious skin diseases, be careful to follow the instructions of the Levitical priests; obey all the commands I have given them.8"Be careful against an infection of leprosy, that you diligently observe and do according to all that the Levitical priests teach you; as I have commanded them, so you shall be careful to do.
Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam as you were coming from Egypt.9"Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam on the way as you came out of Egypt.
“If you lend anything to your neighbor, do not enter his house to pick up the item he is giving as security.10"When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not enter his house to take his pledge.
You must wait outside while he goes in and brings it out to you.11"You shall remain outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you.
If your neighbor is poor and gives you his cloak as security for a loan, do not keep the cloak overnight.12"If he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge.
Return the cloak to its owner by sunset so he can stay warm through the night and bless you, and the LORD your God will count you as righteous.13"When the sun goes down you shall surely return the pledge to him, that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you; and it will be righteousness for you before the LORD your God.
“Never take advantage of poor and destitute laborers, whether they are fellow Israelites or foreigners living in your towns.14"You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your countrymen or one of your aliens who is in your land in your towns.
You must pay them their wages each day before sunset because they are poor and are counting on it. If you don’t, they might cry out to the LORD against you, and it would be counted against you as sin.15"You shall give him his wages on his day before the sun sets, for he is poor and sets his heart on it; so that he will not cry against you to the LORD and it become sin in you.
“Parents must not be put to death for the sins of their children, nor children for the sins of their parents. Those deserving to die must be put to death for their own crimes.16"Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin.
“True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt.17"You shall not pervert the justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow's garment in pledge.
Always remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God redeemed you from your slavery. That is why I have given you this command.18"But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and that the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
“When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do.19"When you reap your harvest in your field and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
When you beat the olives from your olive trees, don’t go over the boughs twice. Leave the remaining olives for the foreigners, orphans, and widows.20"When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow.
When you gather the grapes in your vineyard, don’t glean the vines after they are picked. Leave the remaining grapes for the foreigners, orphans, and widows.21"When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow.
Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I am giving you this command.22"You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
