Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.1Jesus called his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits so they could cast them out and heal every kind of disease and sickness.
Here are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter), then Andrew (Peter’s brother), James (son of Zebedee), John (James’s brother),2Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (called Peter), and Andrew his brother; James son of Zebedee and John his brother;
Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (the tax collector), James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus,3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
Simon (the zealot ), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).4Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans,5Jesus sent out these twelve, instructing them as follows: "Do not go to Gentile regions and do not enter any Samaritan town.
but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep.6Go instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.7As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near!'
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.
“Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins.9Do not take gold, silver, or copper in your belts,
Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.10no bag for the journey, or an extra tunic, or sandals or staff, for the worker deserves his provisions.
“Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.11Whenever you enter a town or village, find out who is worthy there and stay with them until you leave.
When you enter the home, give it your blessing.12As you enter the house, give it greetings.
If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.13And if the house is worthy, let your peace come on it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.
If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.14And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your message, shake the dust off your feet as you leave that house or that town.
I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.15I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town!
“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.16"I am sending you out like sheep surrounded by wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.17Beware of people, because they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues.
You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.18And you will be brought before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them and the Gentiles.
When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time.19Whenever they hand you over for trial, do not worry about how to speak or what to say, for what you should say will be given to you at that time.
For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.20For it is not you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.21"Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against parents and have them put to death.
And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.22And you will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Man will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.23Whenever they persecute you in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.24"A disciple is not greater than his teacher, nor a slave greater than his master.
Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!25It is enough for the disciple to become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house 'Beelzebul,' how much more will they defame the members of his household!
“But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.26"Do not be afraid of them, for nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing is secret that will not be made known.
What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!27What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.
“Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin ? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.29Aren't two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will.
And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.30Even all the hairs on your head are numbered.
So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.31So do not be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
“Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.32"Whoever, then, acknowledges me before people, I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.33But whoever denies me before people, I will deny him also before my Father in heaven.
“Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.34"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword.
‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.35For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law,
Your enemies will be right in your own household!’36and a man's enemies will be the members of his household.
“If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.37"Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.38And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life because of me will find it.
“Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.40"Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.41Whoever receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. Whoever receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward.
And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”42And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple, I tell you the truth, he will never lose his reward."
