Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.1Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων ὥστε ἐκβάλλειν αὐτὰ καὶ θεραπεύειν πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν
Here are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter), then Andrew (Peter’s brother), James (son of Zebedee), John (James’s brother),2Τῶν δὲ δώδεκα ἀποστόλων τὰ ὀνόματά ἐστιν ταῦτα πρῶτος Σίμων λεγόμενος Πέτρος καὶ Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἰάκωβος τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννης ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ
Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (the tax collector), James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus,3Φίλιππος καὶ Βαρθολομαῖος Θωμᾶς καὶ Μαθθαῖος τελώνης Ἰάκωβος τοῦ Ἁλφαίου καὶ Θαδδαῖος
Simon (the zealot ), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).4Σίμων Καναναῖος καὶ Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης καὶ παραδοὺς αὐτόν
Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans,5Τούτους τοὺς δώδεκα ἀπέστειλεν Ἰησοῦς παραγγείλας αὐτοῖς λέγων Εἰς ὁδὸν ἐθνῶν μὴ ἀπέλθητε καὶ εἰς πόλιν Σαμαριτῶν μὴ εἰσέλθητε
but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep.6πορεύεσθε δὲ μᾶλλον πρὸς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ
Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.7πορευόμενοι δὲ κηρύσσετε λέγοντες ὅτι Ἤγγικεν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!8ἀσθενοῦντας θεραπεύετε νεκροὺς ἐγείρετε λεπροὺς καθαρίζετε δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλετε δωρεὰν ἐλάβετε δωρεὰν δότε
“Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins.9Μὴ κτήσησθε χρυσὸν μηδὲ ἄργυρον μηδὲ χαλκὸν εἰς τὰς ζώνας ὑμῶν
Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.10μὴ πήραν εἰς ὁδὸν μηδὲ δύο χιτῶνας μηδὲ ὑποδήματα μηδὲ ῥάβδον ἄξιος γὰρ ἐργάτης τῆς τροφῆς αὐτοῦ
“Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.11Εἰς ἣν δ’ ἂν πόλιν κώμην εἰσέλθητε ἐξετάσατε τίς ἐν αὐτῇ ἄξιός ἐστιν κἀκεῖ μείνατε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε
When you enter the home, give it your blessing.12εἰσερχόμενοι δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ἀσπάσασθε αὐτήν
If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.13καὶ ἐὰν μὲν οἰκία ἀξία ἐλθάτω εἰρήνη ὑμῶν ἐπ’ αὐτήν ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀξία εἰρήνη ὑμῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐπιστραφήτω
If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.14καὶ ὃς ἂν μὴ δέξηται ὑμᾶς μηδὲ ἀκούσῃ τοὺς λόγους ὑμῶν ἐξερχόμενοι ἔξω τῆς οἰκίας τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης ἐκτινάξατε τὸν κονιορτὸν τῶν ποδῶν ὑμῶν
I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.15ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται γῇ Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόρρων ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ
“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.16Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς πρόβατα ἐν μέσῳ λύκων γίνεσθε οὖν φρόνιμοι ὡς οἱ ὄφεις καὶ ἀκέραιοι ὡς αἱ περιστεραί
But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.17Προσέχετε δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων παραδώσουσιν γὰρ ὑμᾶς εἰς συνέδρια καὶ ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν μαστιγώσουσιν ὑμᾶς
You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.18καὶ ἐπὶ ἡγεμόνας δὲ καὶ βασιλεῖς ἀχθήσεσθε ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν
When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time.19ὅταν δὲ παραδῶσιν ὑμᾶς μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς τί λαλήσητε δοθήσεται γὰρ ὑμῖν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ τί λαλήσητε
For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.20οὐ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ λαλοῦντες ἀλλὰ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν τὸ λαλοῦν ἐν ὑμῖν
“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.21Παραδώσει δὲ ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὸν εἰς θάνατον καὶ πατὴρ τέκνον καὶ ἐπαναστήσονται τέκνα ἐπὶ γονεῖς καὶ θανατώσουσιν αὐτούς
And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.22καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται
When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Man will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.23Ὅταν δὲ διώκωσιν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ φεύγετε εἰς τὴν ἑτέραν ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ τελέσητε τὰς πόλεις τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἕως ‹ἂν› ἔλθῃ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
“Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.24Οὐκ ἔστιν μαθητὴς ὑπὲρ τὸν διδάσκαλον οὐδὲ δοῦλος ὑπὲρ τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ
Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!25ἀρκετὸν τῷ μαθητῇ ἵνα γένηται ὡς διδάσκαλος αὐτοῦ καὶ δοῦλος ὡς κύριος αὐτοῦ εἰ τὸν οἰκοδεσπότην Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐπεκάλεσαν πόσῳ μᾶλλον τοὺς οἰκιακοὺς αὐτοῦ
“But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.26Μὴ οὖν φοβηθῆτε αὐτούς οὐδὲν γάρ ἐστιν κεκαλυμμένον οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται καὶ κρυπτὸν οὐ γνωσθήσεται
What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!27 λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτί καὶ εἰς τὸ οὖς ἀκούετε κηρύξατε ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων
“Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.28Καὶ μὴ φοβεῖσθε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεννόντων τὸ σῶμα τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν μὴ δυναμένων ἀποκτεῖναι φοβεῖσθε δὲ μᾶλλον τὸν δυνάμενον καὶ ψυχὴν καὶ σῶμα ἀπολέσαι ἐν γεέννῃ
What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin ? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.29Οὐχὶ δύο στρουθία ἀσσαρίου πωλεῖται καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐ πεσεῖται ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἄνευ τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν
And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.30ὑμῶν δὲ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς πᾶσαι ἠριθμημέναι εἰσίν
So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.31μὴ οὖν φοβεῖσθε πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε ὑμεῖς
“Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.32Πᾶς οὖν ὅστις ὁμολογήσει ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὁμολογήσω κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.33ὅστις δ’ ἂν ἀρνήσηταί με ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀρνήσομαι κἀγὼ αὐτὸν ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
“Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.34Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν οὐκ ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἀλλὰ μάχαιραν
‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.35ἦλθον γὰρ διχάσαι Ἄνθρωπον κατὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Καὶ θυγατέρα κατὰ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς Καὶ νύμφην κατὰ τῆς πενθερᾶς αὐτῆς
Your enemies will be right in your own household!’36Καὶ ἐχθροὶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οἱ οἰκιακοὶ αὐτοῦ
“If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.37 φιλῶν πατέρα μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος καὶ φιλῶν υἱὸν θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος
If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.38καὶ ὃς οὐ λαμβάνει τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθεῖ ὀπίσω μου οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος
If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.39 εὑρὼν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν καὶ ἀπολέσας τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν
“Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.40 δεχόμενος ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δέχεται καὶ ἐμὲ δεχόμενος δέχεται τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με
If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.41 δεχόμενος προφήτην εἰς ὄνομα προφήτου μισθὸν προφήτου λήμψεται καὶ δεχόμενος δίκαιον εἰς ὄνομα δικαίου μισθὸν δικαίου λήμψεται
And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”42καὶ ὃς ἂν* ποτίσῃ ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν τούτων ποτήριον ψυχροῦ μόνον εἰς ὄνομα μαθητοῦ ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ
