1 On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. They came to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes. They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, Who had <i>his</i> dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: He lived among the tombs; and no one was able to bind him anymore, not even with a chain, This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
4 Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him. for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any <i>man</i> tame him. because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces; and no one was strong enough to subdue him. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and cutting himself with stones. 6 When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me! And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, <i>thou</i> Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do You have with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
8 For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit! For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For he said unto him, Come out of the man, <i>thou</i> unclean spirit. For He had <i>already</i> been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 “What is your name? Jesus asked. “My name is Legion, he replied, “for we are many. And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” And he asked him, What <i>is</i> thy name? And he answered, saying, My name <i>is</i> Legion: for we are many. And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region. And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. And he begged Him earnestly not to send them out of the region. And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding nearby on the mountain. A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them. and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And <i>the demons</i> begged Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs so that we may enter them.” The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
13 He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water. So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. <i>Jesus</i> gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand <i>of them;</i> and they were drowned in the sea. He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. And they that fed the swine fled, and told <i>it</i> in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. Their herdsmen ran away and reported <i>it</i> in the city and in the countryside. And <i>the people</i> came to see what it was that had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. And <i>then</i> they came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the <i>very</i> man who had <i>previously</i> had the “legion”; and they became frightened. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they that saw <i>it</i> told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and <i>also</i> concerning the swine. Those who had seen <i>it</i> described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and <i>all</i> about the pigs. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.
17 And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. And they began to beg Him to leave their region. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was begging Him that he might accompany Him. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people, He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you. And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and <i>how</i> He had mercy on you.” Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all <i>men</i> did marvel. And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
21 When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea. And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea. When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and He stayed by the seashore. When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
22 A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, And one of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came, and upon seeing Him, fell at His feet Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
23 and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live. and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: <i>I pray thee</i>, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. and pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; <i>please</i> come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live.” He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him. And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And <i>Jesus</i> went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him. And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him. So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse. and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but instead had become worse— She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind <i>Him</i> and touched His cloak. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. For she had been saying <i>to herself,</i> “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.” because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in <i>her</i> body that she was healed of that plague. And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments? And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that power from Him had gone out, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me? And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ “
32 But He kept looking around to see who had done this. And he looked around to see who had done it. And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth. 34 “Daughter, said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be cured of your disease.” He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore? While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's <i>house certain</i> which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? While He was still speaking, <i>people</i> came from <i>the house of</i> the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why bother the Teacher further?” While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe. But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. And He allowed no one to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
38 When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 39 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And after entering, He said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died, but is asleep.” He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
40 And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child. And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And they <i>began</i> laughing at Him. But putting them all outside, He took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and entered <i>the room</i> where the child was <i>in bed.</i> But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum! which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up! Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Talitha, kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around. She was twelve years old, and at once they were utterly astounded. And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was <i>of the age</i> of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. And immediately the girl got up and <i>began</i> to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astonished. Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
43 Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat. And He gave them strict orders that no one was to know about this, and He told <i>them</i> to have <i>something</i> given her to eat. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
