1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through [the] righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: 1Συμεὼν Πέτρος δοῦλος καὶ ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ Τοῖς ἰσότιμον ἡμῖν λαχοῦσιν πίστιν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ Σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
2Grace and peace be multiplied to you through [the] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 2Χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη πληθυνθείη ἐν ἐπιγνώσει τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν
3His divine power has given us everything [we need] for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us [by His] own glory and excellence. 3Ὡς 〈τὰ〉 πάντα ἡμῖν τῆς θείας δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ τὰ πρὸς ζωὴν καὶ εὐσέβειαν δεδωρημένης διὰ τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ καλέσαντος ἡμᾶς ἰδίᾳ δόξῃ καὶ ἀρετῇ
4Through [these] He has given us [His] precious and magnificent promises, so that through [them] you may become partakers of [the] divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 4δι’ ὧν τὰ τίμια καὶ μέγιστα ἡμῖν ἐπαγγέλματα δεδώρηται ἵνα διὰ τούτων γένησθε θείας κοινωνοὶ φύσεως ἀποφυγόντες τῆς ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἐν ἐπιθυμίᾳ φθορᾶς
5For this very [reason], make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; 5Καὶ αὐτὸ τοῦτο δὲ σπουδὴν πᾶσαν παρεισενέγκαντες ἐπιχορηγήσατε ἐν τῇ πίστει ὑμῶν τὴν ἀρετήν ἐν δὲ τῇ ἀρετῇ τὴν γνῶσιν
6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 6ἐν δὲ τῇ γνώσει τὴν ἐγκράτειαν ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐγκρατείᾳ τὴν ὑπομονήν ἐν δὲ τῇ ὑπομονῇ τὴν εὐσέβειαν
7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 7ἐν δὲ τῇ εὐσεβείᾳ τὴν φιλαδελφίαν ἐν δὲ τῇ φιλαδελφίᾳ τὴν ἀγάπην
8For [if] you possess these [ qualities ] and continue to grow [in them], they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in [your] knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8ταῦτα γὰρ ὑμῖν ὑπάρχοντα καὶ πλεονάζοντα οὐκ ἀργοὺς οὐδὲ ἀκάρπους καθίστησιν εἰς τὴν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐπίγνωσιν
9[But] whoever lacks these [ traits ] is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. 9ᾧ γὰρ μὴ πάρεστιν ταῦτα τυφλός ἐστιν μυωπάζων λήθην λαβὼν τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ τῶν πάλαι αὐτοῦ ἁμαρτιῶν
10Therefore, brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things {you will} never stumble, 10Διὸ μᾶλλον ἀδελφοί σπουδάσατε βεβαίαν ὑμῶν τὴν κλῆσιν καὶ ἐκλογὴν ποιεῖσθαι ταῦτα γὰρ ποιοῦντες οὐ μὴ πταίσητέ ποτε
11and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 11οὕτως γὰρ πλουσίως ἐπιχορηγηθήσεται ὑμῖν ἡ εἴσοδος εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον βασιλείαν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ Σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
12Therefore, I will always remind you of these things, even though you know [them] and are established in the truth you now have. 12Διὸ μελλήσω ἀεὶ ὑμᾶς ὑπομιμνῄσκειν περὶ τούτων καίπερ εἰδότας καὶ ἐστηριγμένους ἐν τῇ παρούσῃ ἀληθείᾳ
13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I [live] in the tent [ of my body ], 13δίκαιον δὲ ἡγοῦμαι ἐφ’ ὅσον εἰμὶ ἐν τούτῳ τῷ σκηνώματι διεγείρειν ὑμᾶς ἐν ὑπομνήσει
14since I know that [it] will soon be laid aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 14εἰδὼς ὅτι ταχινή ἐστιν ἡ ἀπόθεσις τοῦ σκηνώματός μου καθὼς καὶ ὁ Κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ἐδήλωσέν μοι
15And I will make every effort to ensure [that] after my departure, you will be able to recall these things at all times. 15σπουδάσω δὲ καὶ ἑκάστοτε ἔχειν ὑμᾶς μετὰ τὴν ἐμὴν ἔξοδον τὴν τούτων μνήμην ποιεῖσθαι
16For we did not follow cleverly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 16Οὐ γὰρ σεσοφισμένοις μύθοις ἐξακολουθήσαντες ἐγνωρίσαμεν ὑμῖν τὴν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δύναμιν καὶ παρουσίαν ἀλλ’ ἐπόπται γενηθέντες τῆς ἐκείνου μεγαλειότητος
17For He received honor and glory from God [the] Father [when] the voice from the Majestic Glory said to Him, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 17λαβὼν γὰρ παρὰ Θεοῦ Πατρὸς τιμὴν καὶ δόξαν φωνῆς ἐνεχθείσης αὐτῷ τοιᾶσδε ὑπὸ τῆς μεγαλοπρεποῦς δόξης Ὁ Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός μου οὗτός ἐστιν εἰς ὃν ἐγὼ εὐδόκησα
18And we ourselves heard this voice from heaven [when] we were with Him on the holy mountain. 18καὶ ταύτην τὴν φωνὴν ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐνεχθεῖσαν σὺν αὐτῷ ὄντες ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ ὄρει
19We also have the message of the prophets, [which] has been confirmed beyond doubt. [And] you will do well to pay attention to [this message], as to a lamp shining in [a] dark place, until [the] day dawns and [the] morning star rises in your hearts. 19Καὶ ἔχομεν βεβαιότερον τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον ᾧ καλῶς ποιεῖτε προσέχοντες ὡς λύχνῳ φαίνοντι ἐν αὐχμηρῷ τόπῳ ἕως οὗ ἡμέρα διαυγάσῃ καὶ φωσφόρος ἀνατείλῃ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν
20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from [the prophet’s] own interpretation. 20τοῦτο πρῶτον γινώσκοντες ὅτι πᾶσα προφητεία γραφῆς ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως οὐ γίνεται
21For no prophecy {was} ever brought about through human initiative, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by [the] Holy Spirit. 21οὐ γὰρ θελήματι ἀνθρώπου ἠνέχθη προφητεία ποτέ ἀλλὰ ὑπὸ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου φερόμενοι ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωποι
