The Altar of Incense
(Exodus 37:25–29)

1  וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ (And you shall make) מִזְבֵּ֖חַ (an altar) מִקְטַ֣ר (to burn) קְטֹ֑רֶת (incense). עֲצֵ֥י (Of wood) שִׁטִּ֖ים (acacia) תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה (you shall make) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (it). 2  אַמָּ֨ה (A cubit) אָרְכּ֜וֹ (its length) וְאַמָּ֤ה (and a cubit) רָחְבּוֹ֙ (its width). רָב֣וּעַ (Square) יִהְיֶ֔ה (it shall be), וְאַמָּתַ֖יִם (and two cubits) קֹמָת֑וֹ (its height). מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (From it) קַרְנֹתָֽיו׃ (its horns shall be). 3  וְצִפִּיתָ֨ (And you shall overlay) אֹת֜וֹ (it) זָהָ֣ב (with gold) טָה֗וֹר (pure) אֶת־ (-) גַּגּ֧וֹ (its top) וְאֶת־ (and) קִירֹתָ֛יו (its sides) סָבִ֖יב (all around), וְאֶת־ (and) קַרְנֹתָ֑יו (its horns); וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ (and you shall make) לּ֛וֹ (for it) זֵ֥ר (a molding) זָהָ֖ב (of gold) סָבִֽיב׃ (all around). 4  וּשְׁתֵּי֩ (And two) טַבְּעֹ֨ת (rings) זָהָ֜ב (gold) תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ (you shall make) לּ֣וֹ׀ (for it). מִתַּ֣חַת (Under) לְזֵר֗וֹ (its molding) עַ֚ל (on) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) צַלְעֹתָ֔יו (of its sides) תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה (you shall place them) עַל־ (on) שְׁנֵ֣י (both) צִדָּ֑יו (of its flanks), וְהָיָה֙ (and they will be) לְבָתִּ֣ים (as holders) לְבַדִּ֔ים (for poles) לָשֵׂ֥את (to carry) אֹת֖וֹ (it) בָּהֵֽמָּה׃ (with them). 5  וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ (And you shall make) אֶת־ (-) הַבַּדִּ֖ים (the poles) עֲצֵ֣י (of wood) שִׁטִּ֑ים (acacia), וְצִפִּיתָ֥ (and you shall overlay) אֹתָ֖ם (them) זָהָֽב׃ (with gold).

6  וְנָתַתָּ֤ה (And you shall put) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַפָּרֹ֔כֶת (the veil) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that is) עַל־ (over) אֲרֹ֣ן (the ark) הָעֵדֻ֑ת (of the Testimony), לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַכַּפֹּ֗רֶת (the mercy seat) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that is) עַל־ (over) הָ֣עֵדֻ֔ת (the Testimony), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (where) אִוָּעֵ֥ד (I will meet) לְךָ֖ (with you) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there). 7  וְהִקְטִ֥יר (And shall burn) עָלָ֛יו (on it) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron) קְטֹ֣רֶת (incense) סַמִּ֑ים (of spices). בַּבֹּ֣קֶר (The morning) בַּבֹּ֗קֶר (by the morning) בְּהֵיטִיב֛וֹ (when he makes good) אֶת־ (-) הַנֵּרֹ֖ת (the lamps), יַקְטִירֶֽנָּה׃ (he shall burn incense on it). 8  וּבְהַעֲלֹ֨ת (And when lifts up) אַהֲרֹ֧ן (Aaron) אֶת־ (-) הַנֵּרֹ֛ת (the lamps) בֵּ֥ין (between) הָעֲרְבַּ֖יִם (the evenings); יַקְטִירֶ֑נָּה (he shall burn) קְטֹ֧רֶת (incense) תָּמִ֛יד (continually) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (throughout your⁺ generations). 9  לֹא־ (Not) תַעֲל֥וּ (you⁺ shall lift up) עָלָ֛יו (on it) קְטֹ֥רֶת (incense) זָרָ֖ה (strange), וְעֹלָ֣ה (and a burnt offering), וּמִנְחָ֑ה (and a grain offering); וְנֵ֕סֶךְ (and a drink offering) לֹ֥א (not) תִסְּכ֖וּ (shall you⁺ pour) עָלָֽיו׃ (on it).

10  וְכִפֶּ֤ר (And shall make atonement) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) עַל־ (upon) קַרְנֹתָ֔יו (its horns) אַחַ֖ת (once) בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה (in the year), מִדַּ֞ם (from the blood) חַטַּ֣את (of the sin offering) הַכִּפֻּרִ֗ים (of the atonements); אַחַ֤ת (once) בַּשָּׁנָה֙ (in the year) יְכַפֵּ֤ר (he shall make atonement) עָלָיו֙ (upon it). לְדֹרֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (Throughout your⁺ generations) קֹֽדֶשׁ־ (holy) קָֽדָשִׁ֥ים (of holies) ה֖וּא (it is) לַיהוָֽה׃פ (to YHWH).

The Census Offering
(2 Samuel 24:1–9; 1 Chronicles 21:1–6)

11  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 12  כִּ֣י (When) תִשָּׂ֞א (you take up) אֶת־ (-) רֹ֥אשׁ (the census) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל (of Israel) לִפְקֻדֵיהֶם֒ (for their number), וְנָ֨תְנ֜וּ (then they shall give) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) כֹּ֧פֶר (a ransom) נַפְשׁ֛וֹ (for his soul) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) בִּפְקֹ֣ד (when numbering) אֹתָ֑ם (them), וְלֹא־ (and not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there shall be) בָהֶ֛ם (among them) נֶ֖גֶף (a plague) בִּפְקֹ֥ד (when numbering) אֹתָֽם׃ (them). 13  זֶ֣ה׀ (This) יִתְּנ֗וּ (shall give) כָּל־ (everyone) הָעֹבֵר֙ (passing over) עַל־ (among) הַפְּקֻדִ֔ים (those who are numbered), מַחֲצִ֥ית (half) הַשֶּׁ֖קֶל (a shekel) בְּשֶׁ֣קֶל (according to the shekel) הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (of the sanctuary)— עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (twenty) גֵּרָה֙ (gerahs) הַשֶּׁ֔קֶל (is the shekel)— מַחֲצִ֣ית (half) הַשֶּׁ֔קֶל (the shekel) תְּרוּמָ֖ה (is a contribution) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

14  כֹּ֗ל (Everyone) הָעֹבֵר֙ (passing over) עַל־ (among) הַפְּקֻדִ֔ים (those who are numbered), מִבֶּ֛ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וָמָ֑עְלָה (and above), יִתֵּ֖ן (shall give) תְּרוּמַ֥ת (a contribution) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 15  הֶֽעָשִׁ֣יר (The rich) לֹֽא־ (not) יַרְבֶּ֗ה (shall give more), וְהַדַּל֙ (and the poor) לֹ֣א (not) יַמְעִ֔יט (shall give less) מִֽמַּחֲצִ֖ית (than half) הַשָּׁ֑קֶל (the shekel), לָתֵת֙ (to give) אֶת־ (-) תְּרוּמַ֣ת (a contribution) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), לְכַפֵּ֖ר (to make atonement) עַל־ (upon) נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ souls). 16  וְלָקַחְתָּ֞ (And you shall take) אֶת־ (-) כֶּ֣סֶף (silver) הַכִּפֻּרִ֗ים (the atonements) מֵאֵת֙ (from) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְנָתַתָּ֣ (and you shall give) אֹת֔וֹ (it) עַל־ (to) עֲבֹדַ֖ת (the service) אֹ֣הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵ֑ד (of Meeting), וְהָיָה֩ (and it shall be) לִבְנֵ֨י (for the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל (of Israel) לְזִכָּרוֹן֙ (for a memorial) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), לְכַפֵּ֖ר (to make atonement) עַל־ (upon) נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶֽם׃פ (your⁺ souls).

The Bronze Basin
(Exodus 38:8)

17  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 18  וְעָשִׂ֜יתָ (And you shall make) כִּיּ֥וֹר (a basin) נְחֹ֛שֶׁת (of bronze), וְכַנּ֥וֹ (and its stand) נְחֹ֖שֶׁת (of bronze), לְרָחְצָ֑ה (for washing). וְנָתַתָּ֣ (And you shall put) אֹת֗וֹ (it) בֵּֽין־ (between) אֹ֤הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵד֙ (of Meeting) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (the altar), וְנָתַתָּ֥ (and you shall put) שָׁ֖מָּה (in it) מָֽיִם׃ (water). 19  וְרָחֲצ֛וּ (And for shall wash) אַהֲרֹ֥ן (Aaron) וּבָנָ֖יו (and his sons) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (from it) אֶת־ (-) יְדֵיהֶ֖ם (their hands) וְאֶת־ (and) רַגְלֵיהֶֽם׃ (their feet). 20  בְּבֹאָ֞ם (When they go) אֶל־ (into) אֹ֧הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵ֛ד (of Meeting), יִרְחֲצוּ־ (they shall wash) מַ֖יִם (with water), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָמֻ֑תוּ (they shall die); א֣וֹ (or) בְגִשְׁתָּ֤ם (when they draw near) אֶל־ (to) הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ (the altar) לְשָׁרֵ֔ת (to minister), לְהַקְטִ֥יר (to burn) אִשֶּׁ֖ה (a fire offering) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 21  וְרָחֲצ֛וּ (And they shall wash) יְדֵיהֶ֥ם (their hands) וְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם (and their feet), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָמֻ֑תוּ (they shall die); וְהָיְתָ֨ה (and it shall be) לָהֶ֧ם (to them) חָק־ (a statute) עוֹלָ֛ם (forever) ל֥וֹ (to him) וּלְזַרְע֖וֹ (and to his seed) לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃פ (throughout their generations).

The Anointing Oil

22  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 23  וְאַתָּ֣ה (And you), קַח־ (take) לְךָ֮ (for yourself) בְּשָׂמִ֣ים (spices) רֹאשׁ֒ (the finest): מָר־ (Myrrh) דְּרוֹר֙ (liquid) חֲמֵ֣שׁ (five) מֵא֔וֹת (hundred shekels); וְקִנְּמָן־ (and cinnamon) בֶּ֥שֶׂם (sweet-smelling) מַחֲצִית֖וֹ (half as much)— חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים (fifty) וּמָאתָ֑יִם (and two hundred shekels); וּקְנֵה־ (and cane) בֹ֖שֶׂם (sweet-smelling) חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (fifty) וּמָאתָֽיִם׃ (and two hundred shekels). 24  וְקִדָּ֕ה (And cassia) חֲמֵ֥שׁ (five) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred shekels) בְּשֶׁ֣קֶל (according to the shekel) הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (of the sanctuary), וְשֶׁ֥מֶן (and of oil) זַ֖יִת (olive) הִֽין׃ (a hin). 25  וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ (And you shall make) אֹת֗וֹ (it) שֶׁ֚מֶן (oil) מִשְׁחַת־ (anointing) קֹ֔דֶשׁ (holy), רֹ֥קַח (an ointment) מִרְקַ֖חַת (compounded) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the work) רֹקֵ֑חַ (of a perfumer); שֶׁ֥מֶן (oil) מִשְׁחַת־ (anointing) קֹ֖דֶשׁ (holy) יִהְיֶֽה׃ (it shall be).

26  וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ (And you shall anoint) ב֖וֹ (with it) אֶת־ (-) אֹ֣הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵ֑ד (of Meeting), וְאֵ֖ת (and) אֲר֥וֹן (the Ark) הָעֵדֻֽת׃ (of the Testimony), 27  וְאֶת־ (and) הַשֻּׁלְחָן֙ (the table), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) כֵּלָ֔יו (its vessels), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמְּנֹרָ֖ה (the lampstand), וְאֶת־ (and) כֵּלֶ֑יהָ (its vessels), וְאֵ֖ת (and) מִזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) הַקְּטֹֽרֶת׃ (of incense), 28  וְאֶת־ (and) מִזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) הָעֹלָ֖ה (of the burnt offering), וְאֶת־ (and with) כָּל־ (all) כֵּלָ֑יו (its vessels), וְאֶת־ (and) הַכִּיֹּ֖ר (the basin) וְאֶת־ (and) כַּנּֽוֹ׃ (its stand). 29  וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֣ (And you shall sanctify) אֹתָ֔ם (them), וְהָי֖וּ (that they may be) קֹ֣דֶשׁ (holy) קָֽדָשִׁ֑ים (of holies). כָּל־ (Anything) הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ (that touches) בָּהֶ֖ם (them) יִקְדָּֽשׁ׃ (shall be holy). 30  וְאֶת־ (And) אַהֲרֹ֥ן (Aaron) וְאֶת־ (and) בָּנָ֖יו (his sons) תִּמְשָׁ֑ח (you shall anoint) וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ (and sanctify) אֹתָ֖ם (them) לְכַהֵ֥ן (to minister as priests) לִֽי׃ (to Me).

31  וְאֶל־ (And to) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) תְּדַבֵּ֣ר (you shall speak), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), שֶׁ֠מֶן (Oil) מִשְׁחַת־ (anointing) קֹ֨דֶשׁ (holy) יִהְיֶ֥ה (is) זֶ֛ה (this) לִ֖י (to Me) לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (throughout your⁺ generations). 32  עַל־ (On) בְּשַׂ֤ר (flesh) אָדָם֙ (of man) לֹ֣א (not) יִיסָ֔ךְ (it shall be poured) וּבְמַ֨תְכֻּנְתּ֔וֹ (and with its proportion); לֹ֥א (not) תַעֲשׂ֖וּ (shall you⁺ make) כָּמֹ֑הוּ (any other like it). קֹ֣דֶשׁ (Holy) ה֔וּא (it is), קֹ֖דֶשׁ (and holy) יִהְיֶ֥ה (it shall be) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺). 33  אִ֚ישׁ (Anyone) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) יִרְקַ֣ח (compounds) כָּמֹ֔הוּ (like it), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and whoever) יִתֵּ֛ן (puts) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (from it) עַל־ (on) זָ֑ר (an outsider), וְנִכְרַ֖ת (and he shall be cut off) מֵעַמָּֽיו׃ס (from his people).

The Incense

34  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses), קַח־ (Take) לְךָ֣ (unto you) סַמִּ֗ים (spices), נָטָ֤ף׀ (gum resin), וּשְׁחֵ֙לֶת֙ (and onycha), וְחֶלְבְּנָ֔ה (and galbanum); סַמִּ֖ים (spices) וּלְבֹנָ֣ה (and frankincense) זַכָּ֑ה (pure); בַּ֥ד (part) בְּבַ֖ד (for part) יִהְיֶֽה׃ (there shall be). 35  וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ (And you shall make) אֹתָהּ֙ (it) קְטֹ֔רֶת (incense), רֹ֖קַח (a compound) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the work) רוֹקֵ֑חַ (of a perfumer) מְמֻלָּ֖ח (salted), טָה֥וֹר (pure) קֹֽדֶשׁ׃ (and holy). 36  וְשָֽׁחַקְתָּ֣ (And you shall grind) מִמֶּנָּה֮ (some of it) הָדֵק֒ (very fine), וְנָתַתָּ֨ה (and put) מִמֶּ֜נָּה (some of it) לִפְנֵ֤י (before the face of) הָעֵדֻת֙ (the Testimony) בְּאֹ֣הֶל (in the Tent) מוֹעֵ֔ד (of Meeting), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (where) אִוָּעֵ֥ד (I will meet) לְךָ֖ (with you) שָׁ֑מָּה (there). קֹ֥דֶשׁ (Holy) קָֽדָשִׁ֖ים (of holies) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (it shall be) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺). 37  וְהַקְּטֹ֙רֶת֙ (And the incense) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה (you shall make) בְּמַ֨תְכֻּנְתָּ֔הּ (with its proportion), לֹ֥א (not) תַעֲשׂ֖וּ (you⁺ shall make) לָכֶ֑ם (for yourselves). קֹ֛דֶשׁ (Holy) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (it shall be) לְךָ֖ (to you) לַיהוָֽה׃ (for YHWH). 38  אִ֛ישׁ (A man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (makes) כָמ֖וֹהָ (something like it) לְהָרִ֣יחַ (to smell) בָּ֑הּ (it) וְנִכְרַ֖ת (and he shall be cut off) מֵעַמָּֽיו׃ס (from his people).
