Babylon Is Fallen
(Revelation 18:1–8)
1 מַשָּׂ֖א (The burden) מִדְבַּר־ (of the wilderness) יָ֑ם (the Sea):
כְּסוּפ֤וֹת (Like tempests) בַּנֶּ֙גֶב֙ (in the Negev) לַֽחֲלֹ֔ף (at the passing through),
מִמִּדְבָּ֣ר (from the wilderness) בָּ֔א (it comes),
מֵאֶ֖רֶץ (from a land) נוֹרָאָֽה׃ (fearsome).
2 חָז֥וּת (A vision) קָשָׁ֖ה (harsh) הֻגַּד־ (is presented) לִ֑י (to me):
הַבּוֹגֵ֤ד׀ (The treacherous one) בּוֹגֵד֙ (deals treacherously),
וְהַשּׁוֹדֵ֣ד׀ (and the destroyer) שׁוֹדֵ֔ד (destroys).
עֲלִ֤י (Go up), עֵילָם֙ (O Elam)! צוּרִ֣י (Besiege), מָדַ֔י (O Media)!
כָּל־ (All) אַנְחָתָ֖ה (her sighing) הִשְׁבַּֽתִּי׃ (I have made cease).
3 עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) מָלְא֤וּ (are filled) מָתְנַי֙ (my loins) חַלְחָלָ֔ה (with pain);
צִירִ֣ים (pangs) אֲחָז֔וּנִי (have taken hold of me) כְּצִירֵ֖י (like the pangs) יֽוֹלֵדָ֑ה (of one giving birth).
נַעֲוֵ֣יתִי (I am writhing) מִשְּׁמֹ֔עַ (from hearing);
נִבְהַ֖לְתִּי (I am disturbed) מֵרְאֽוֹת׃ (from seeing).
4 תָּעָ֣ה (Staggers) לְבָבִ֔י (my heart)
פַּלָּצ֖וּת (a shuddering) בִּֽעֲתָ֑תְנִי (terrifies me); אֵ֚ת (-)
נֶ֣שֶׁף (the twilight) חִשְׁקִ֔י (of my desire)
שָׂ֥ם (has been set) לִ֖י (for me) לַחֲרָדָֽה׃ (into fear).
5 עָרֹ֧ךְ (To arrange) הַשֻּׁלְחָ֛ן (the table), צָפֹ֥ה (and lay out) הַצָּפִ֖ית (the spread);
אָכ֣וֹל (to eat), שָׁתֹ֑ה (to drink);
ק֥וּמוּ (rise up), הַשָּׂרִ֖ים (O princes), מִשְׁח֥וּ (and anoint) מָגֵֽן׃פ (the shield).
6 כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֛ר (has said) אֵלַ֖י (to me) אֲדֹנָ֑י (the Lord):
לֵ֚ךְ (Go), הַעֲמֵ֣ד (station) הַֽמְצַפֶּ֔ה (the one keeping watch);
אֲשֶׁ֥ר (what) יִרְאֶ֖ה (he sees) יַגִּֽיד׃ (let him declare).
7 וְרָ֣אָה (And he sees) רֶ֗כֶב (a chariot)— צֶ֚מֶד (with a pair) פָּֽרָשִׁ֔ים (of horses)—
רֶ֥כֶב (the rider) חֲמ֖וֹר (of a donkey), רֶ֣כֶב (and the rider) גָּמָ֑ל (of a camel);
וְהִקְשִׁ֥יב (and he will be) קֶ֖שֶׁב (attentive), רַב־ (with great) קָֽשֶׁב׃ (attention).
8 וַיִּקְרָ֖א (And he called out)— אַרְיֵ֑ה (A lion):
עַל־ (Upon) מִצְפֶּ֣ה׀ (the watchtower), אֲדֹנָ֗י (my Lord),
אָנֹכִ֞י (I) עֹמֵ֤ד (stand) תָּמִיד֙ (continually) יוֹמָ֔ם (by day),
וְעַל־ (and at) מִ֨שְׁמַרְתִּ֔י (my post)
אָנֹכִ֥י (I) נִצָּ֖ב (take my stand) כָּל־ (every) הַלֵּילֽוֹת׃ (night).
9 וְהִנֵּה־ (And behold), זֶ֥ה (this) בָא֙ (is coming), רֶ֣כֶב (the chariot) אִ֔ישׁ (of a man),
צֶ֖מֶד (with a pair) פָּֽרָשִׁ֑ים (of horses).
וַיַּ֣עַן (And he answered) וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said),
נָפְלָ֤ה (Fallen), נָֽפְלָה֙ (has fallen) בָּבֶ֔ל (Babylon)!
וְכָל־ (And all) פְּסִילֵ֥י (the images) אֱלֹהֶ֖יהָ (of her gods)
שִׁבַּ֥ר (He has broken) לָאָֽרֶץ׃ (to the ground).
10 מְדֻשָׁתִ֖י (O my threshing), וּבֶן־ (and the son) גָּרְנִ֑י (of my threshing floor),
אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that which) שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי (I have heard) מֵאֵ֨ת (from) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֛וֹת (Hosts),
אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel),
הִגַּ֥דְתִּי (I have declared) לָכֶֽם׃ס (to you⁺)!
The Burden against Edom
(Isaiah 34:5–17)
11 מַשָּׂ֖א (The burden) דּוּמָ֑ה (of Dumah):
אֵלַי֙ (To me) קֹרֵ֣א (one is calling) מִשֵּׂעִ֔יר (from Seir):
שֹׁמֵר֙ (Watchman), מַה־ (what) מִלַּ֔יְלָה (of the night)?
שֹׁמֵ֖ר (Watchman), מַה־ (what) מִלֵּֽיל׃ (of the night)?
12 אָמַ֣ר (Said) שֹׁמֵ֔ר (the watchman),
אָתָ֥ה (Comes) בֹ֖קֶר (the morning) וְגַם־ (and also) לָ֑יְלָה (the night).
אִם־ (If) תִּבְעָי֥וּן (you⁺ would inquire), בְּעָ֖יוּ (then inquire).
שֻׁ֥בוּ (Return), אֵתָֽיוּ׃ס (come).
The Burden against Arabia
13 מַשָּׂ֖א (The burden) בַּעְרָ֑ב (upon Arabia):
בַּיַּ֤עַר (In the thicket) בַּעְרַב֙ (in Arabia) תָּלִ֔ינוּ (you⁺ lodge),
אֹֽרְח֖וֹת (O caravans) דְּדָנִֽים׃ (of Dedanites).
14 לִקְרַ֥את (To meet) צָמֵ֖א (the thirsty one),
הֵתָ֣יוּ (bring) מָ֑יִם (water), יֹשְׁבֵי֙ (O dwellers) אֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) תֵּימָ֔א (of Tema);
בְּלַחְמ֖וֹ (with his bread) קִדְּמ֥וּ (meet) נֹדֵֽד׃ (the one fleeing).
15 כִּֽי־ (For) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from) חֲרָב֖וֹת (of swords) נָדָ֑דוּ (they do flee),
מִפְּנֵ֣י׀ (from the face) חֶ֣רֶב (the sword) נְטוּשָׁ֗ה (drawn),
וּמִפְּנֵי֙ (and from) קֶ֣שֶׁת (the bow) דְּרוּכָ֔ה (bent),
וּמִפְּנֵ֖י (and from) כֹּ֥בֶד (the weight) מִלְחָמָֽה׃ס (of war).
16 כִּי־ (For) כֹ֛ה (thus) אָמַ֥ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֖י (the Lord) אֵלָ֑י (to me): בְּע֤וֹד (Within) שָׁנָה֙ (a year), כִּשְׁנֵ֣י (according to the years) שָׂכִ֔יר (of a hireling), וְכָלָ֖ה (then will end) כָּל־ (all) כְּב֥וֹד (the glory) קֵדָֽר׃ (of Kedar).
17 וּשְׁאָ֧ר (And the remnant) מִסְפַּר־ (of the number) קֶ֛שֶׁת (of archers), גִּבּוֹרֵ֥י (the mighty ones) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) קֵדָ֖ר (of Kedar), יִמְעָ֑טוּ (will be few).
כִּ֛י (For) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) דִּבֵּֽר׃ס (has spoken).
