Isaiah 44

Yahweh Has Chosen Israel

1  וְעַתָּ֥ה (And now) שְׁמַ֖ע (listen), יַעֲקֹ֣ב (O Jacob) עַבְדִּ֑י (My servant);

וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (and Israel), בָּחַ֥רְתִּי (I have chosen); בֽוֹ׃ (whom).

2  כֹּה־ (Thus) אָמַ֨ר (says) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) עֹשֶׂ֛ךָ (the One having made you)

וְיֹצֶרְךָ֥ (and having formed you) מִבֶּ֖טֶן (who from the womb), יַעְזְרֶ֑ךָּ (who will help you)

אַל־ (Do not), תִּירָא֙ (fear) עַבְדִּ֣י (My servant); יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob),

וִישֻׁר֖וּן (and Jeshurun), בָּחַ֥רְתִּי (I have chosen) בֽוֹ׃ (whom).

3  כִּ֤י (For) אֶצָּק־ (I will pour) מַ֙יִם֙ (water) עַל־ (upon) צָמֵ֔א (a thirsty one),

וְנֹזְלִ֖ים (and streams) עַל־ (upon) יַבָּשָׁ֑ה (the dry ground);

אֶצֹּ֤ק (I will pour) רוּחִי֙ (My Spirit) עַל־ (upon) זַרְעֶ֔ךָ (your seed),

וּבִרְכָתִ֖י (and My blessing) עַל־ (upon) צֶאֱצָאֶֽיךָ׃ (your offspring);

4  וְצָמְח֖וּ (and they will sprout up) בְּבֵ֣ין (among) חָצִ֑יר (the grass),

כַּעֲרָבִ֖ים (like willows) עַל־ (by) יִבְלֵי־ (streams) מָֽיִם׃ (of water).

5  זֶ֤ה (This one) יֹאמַר֙ (will say), לַֽיהוָ֣ה (Unto YHWH); אָ֔נִי (I am)

וְזֶ֖ה (and this one) יִקְרָ֣א (will call himself) בְשֵֽׁם־ (by the name) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob);

וְזֶ֗ה (and this one) יִכְתֹּ֤ב (will write) יָדוֹ֙ (on his hand) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (Unto YHWH),

וּבְשֵׁ֥ם (and by the name) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) יְכַנֶּֽה׃פ (will address himself).

6  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֨ר (says) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH)

מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the King) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel), וְגֹאֲל֖וֹ (and his Redeemer) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) צְבָא֑וֹת (of Hosts);

אֲנִ֤י (I am) רִאשׁוֹן֙ (the First), וַאֲנִ֣י (and I am) אַחֲר֔וֹן (the Last);

וּמִבַּלְעָדַ֖י (and besides Me) אֵ֥ין (there are no) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (gods).

7  וּמִֽי־ (And who), כָמ֣וֹנִי (is like Me)

יִקְרָ֗א (let him call), וְיַגִּידֶ֤הָ (and declare it)

וְיַעְרְכֶ֙הָ֙ (and arrange it) לִ֔י (for Me)

מִשּׂוּמִ֖י (from My putting forth) עַם־ (the people)? עוֹלָ֑ם (Of old)

וְאֹתִיּ֛וֹת (and the things to come), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and what) תָּבֹ֖אנָה (is coming),

יַגִּ֥ידוּ (let them declare it) לָֽמוֹ׃ (themselves).

8  אַֽל־ (Do not), תִּפְחֲדוּ֙ (dread) וְאַל־ (and not) תִּרְה֔וּ (be afraid);

הֲלֹ֥א (Have not) מֵאָ֛ז (long ago), הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֥יךָ (I reported it to you) וְהִגַּ֖דְתִּי (and declared it)

וְאַתֶּ֣ם (and you⁺ are) עֵדָ֑י (My witnesses).

הֲיֵ֤שׁ (Is there) אֱל֙וֹהַּ֙ (a God) מִבַּלְעָדַ֔י (besides Me)

וְאֵ֥ין (and there is no) צ֖וּר (Rock);

בַּל־ (not one) יָדָֽעְתִּי׃ (I know).

9  יֹֽצְרֵי־ (Those fashioning) פֶ֤סֶל (an idol) כֻּלָּם֙ (all of them) תֹּ֔הוּ (are nothing);

וַחֲמוּדֵיהֶ֖ם (and their delights) בַּל־ (cannot) יוֹעִ֑ילוּ (benefit);

וְעֵדֵיהֶ֣ם (and their own witnesses); הֵׄ֗מָּׄהׄ (they) בַּל־ (not), יִרְא֛וּ (can see) וּבַל־ (and not) יֵדְע֖וּ (do they know);

לְמַ֥עַן (so) יֵבֹֽשׁוּ׃ (they are put to shame).

10  מִֽי־ (Who) יָצַ֥ר (would fashion) אֵ֖ל (a god), וּפֶ֣סֶל (or an idol) נָסָ֑ךְ (cast)

לְבִלְתִּ֖י (that not) הוֹעִֽיל׃ (gives benefit)?

11  הֵ֤ן (Behold), כָּל־ (all) חֲבֵרָיו֙ (its companions) יֵבֹ֔שׁוּ (will be put to shame);

וְחָרָשִׁ֥ים (and its craftsmen), הֵ֖מָּה (for they are) מֵֽאָדָ֑ם (are of men).

יִֽתְקַבְּצ֤וּ (Let them gather), כֻלָּם֙ (all of them) יַֽעֲמֹ֔דוּ (let them take their stand);

יִפְחֲד֖וּ (let them dread), יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ (let them be ashamed) יָֽחַד׃ (together).

12  חָרַ֤שׁ (The craftsman) בַּרְזֶל֙ (of iron) מַֽעֲצָ֔ד (has an ax)

וּפָעַל֙ (and works) בַּפֶּחָ֔ם (over the coal),

וּבַמַּקָּב֖וֹת (and with hammers), יִצְּרֵ֑הוּ (fashions it)

וַיִּפְעָלֵ֙הוּ֙ (and works it) בִּזְר֣וֹעַ (of arm). כֹּח֔וֹ (With his strength)

גַּם־ (even so), רָעֵב֙ (he grows hungry), וְאֵ֣ין (and has no); כֹּ֔חַ (strength)

לֹא־ (not) שָׁ֥תָה (does he drink) מַ֖יִם (water), וַיִּיעָֽף׃ (and he becomes faint).

13  חָרַ֣שׁ (The craftsman) עֵצִים֮ (of wood) נָ֣טָה (stretches out) קָו֒ (the measuring-line);

יְתָאֲרֵ֣הוּ (he traces it) בַשֶּׂ֔רֶד (with the stylus);

יַעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ (he fashions it) בַּמַּקְצֻע֔וֹת (with the chisel),

וּבַמְּחוּגָ֖ה (and with the compass), יְתָאֳרֵ֑הוּ (he marks it out)

וַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ (and he makes it) כְּתַבְנִ֣ית (like the figure) אִ֔ישׁ (of a man),

כְּתִפְאֶ֥רֶת (like the splendor) אָדָ֖ם (of mankind);

לָשֶׁ֥בֶת (that it may dwell) בָּֽיִת׃ (in a house).

14  לִכְרָת־ (He cuts down) ל֣וֹ (for himself) אֲרָזִ֔ים (cedars),

וַיִּקַּ֤ח (and takes) תִּרְזָה֙ (cypress) וְאַלּ֔וֹן (and oak),

וַיְאַמֶּץ־ (and he gives strength) ל֖וֹ (to it) בַּעֲצֵי־ (among the trees) יָ֑עַר (of the forest).

נָטַ֥ע (He plants) אֹ֖רֶן (a fir-tree), וְגֶ֥שֶׁם (and the rain) יְגַדֵּֽל׃ (makes it grow).

15  וְהָיָ֤ה (And it is) לְאָדָם֙ (for man) לְבָעֵ֔ר (to burn),

וַיִּקַּ֤ח (and he takes) מֵהֶם֙ (from it) וַיָּ֔חָם (and warms himself)

אַף־ (also), יַשִּׂ֖יק (he kindles a fire)

וְאָ֣פָה (and bakes) לָ֑חֶם (bread);

אַף־ (also), יִפְעַל־ (he makes) אֵל֙ (a god), וַיִּשְׁתָּ֔חוּ (and bows down to it)

עָשָׂ֥הוּ (he makes it) פֶ֖סֶל (a carved image), וַיִּסְגָּד־ (and falls down) לָֽמוֹ׃ (before it).

16  חֶצְיוֹ֙ (Half of it) שָׂרַ֣ף (he burns) בְּמוֹ־ (in) אֵ֔שׁ (the fire);

עַל־ (on) חֶצְיוֹ֙ (half of it) בָּשָׂ֣ר (meat); יֹאכֵ֔ל (he eats)

יִצְלֶ֥ה (he roasts) צָלִ֖י (a roast), וְיִשְׂבָּ֑ע (and is satisfied).

אַף־ (Also), יָחֹם֙ (he warms himself) וְיֹאמַ֣ר (and says),

הֶאָ֔ח (Aha), חַמּוֹתִ֖י (I am warm), רָאִ֥יתִי (I have seen) אֽוּר׃ (the fire).

17  וּשְׁאֵ֣רִית֔וֹ (And the rest of it) לְאֵ֥ל (into a god), עָשָׂ֖ה (he makes) לְפִסְל֑וֹ (as his idol);

יִסְגּוֹד (he bows down) ל֤וֹ (before it)

וְיִשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ (and bows down) וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל (and prays) אֵלָ֔יו (to it) וְיֹאמַר֙ (and says),

הַצִּילֵ֔נִי (Deliver me) כִּ֥י (for) אֵלִ֖י (my god) אָֽתָּה׃ (you are).

18  לֹ֥א (Not) יָדְע֖וּ (do they know) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָבִ֑ינוּ (do they understand),

כִּ֣י (for) טַ֤ח (He has covered over) מֵֽרְאוֹת֙ (from seeing); עֵֽינֵיהֶ֔ם (their eyes),

מֵהַשְׂכִּ֖יל (from understanding) לִבֹּתָֽם׃ (their hearts).

19  וְלֹא־ (And no one) יָשִׁ֣יב (turns it back) אֶל־ (to) לִבּ֗וֹ (his heart),

וְלֹ֨א (and there is no) דַ֥עַת (knowledge) וְלֹֽא־ (and no) תְבוּנָה֮ (understanding) לֵאמֹר֒ (to say),

חֶצְי֞וֹ (Half of it) שָׂרַ֣פְתִּי (I burned) בְמוֹ־ (in) אֵ֗שׁ (the fire);

וְ֠אַף (and also), אָפִ֤יתִי (I have baked) עַל־ (on) גֶּחָלָיו֙ (its coals) לֶ֔חֶם (bread)

אֶצְלֶ֥ה (and roasted) בָשָׂ֖ר (meat), וְאֹכֵ֑ל (and I have eaten)

וְיִתְרוֹ֙ (and the rest of it) לְתוֹעֵבָ֣ה (into an abomination)? אֶעֱשֶׂ֔ה (Shall I make)

לְב֥וּל (before a block) עֵ֖ץ (of wood) אֶסְגּֽוֹד׃ (shall I fall down)?

20  רֹעֶ֣ה (He grazes) אֵ֔פֶר (on ashes);

לֵ֥ב (a heart) הוּתַ֖ל (deceived) הִטָּ֑הוּ (has stretched him aside),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יַצִּ֤יל (will he deliver) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשׁוֹ֙ (his soul), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יֹאמַ֔ר (he does say),

הֲל֥וֹא (Is not) שֶׁ֖קֶר (a lie) בִּימִינִֽי׃ס (in my right hand)?

Jerusalem to Be Restored

21  זְכָר־ (Remember) אֵ֣לֶּה (these things), יַעֲקֹ֔ב (O Jacob)

וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (and Israel); כִּ֣י (for) עַבְדִּי־ (My servant); אָ֑תָּה (you are)

יְצַרְתִּ֤יךָ (I have formed you) עֶֽבֶד־ (servant), לִי֙ (My) אַ֔תָּה (you are) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (O Israel),

לֹ֥א (not) תִנָּשֵֽׁנִי׃ (will you be forgotten by Me).

22  מָחִ֤יתִי (I have blotted out), כָעָב֙ (like a cloud), פְּשָׁעֶ֔יךָ (your transgressions),

וְכֶעָנָ֖ן (and like a mist), חַטֹּאותֶ֑יךָ (your sins);

שׁוּבָ֥ה (return) אֵלַ֖י (to Me) כִּ֥י (for) גְאַלְתִּֽיךָ׃ (I have redeemed you).

23  רָנּ֨וּ (Sing out), שָׁמַ֜יִם (O heavens); כִּֽי־ (for) עָשָׂ֣ה (has done it) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH)

הָרִ֙יעוּ֙ (Give a shout,), תַּחְתִּיּ֣וֹת (O lower parts) אָ֔רֶץ (of the earth);

פִּצְח֤וּ (Break forth) הָרִים֙ (O mountains), רִנָּ֔ה (into singing),

יַ֖עַר (O forest), וְכָל־ (and every) עֵ֣ץ (tree) בּ֑וֹ (in it)

כִּֽי־ (for) גָאַ֤ל (has redeemed) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob),

וּבְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (and in Israel) יִתְפָּאָֽר׃פ (He has glorified Himself).

24  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH),

גֹּאֲלֶ֔ךָ (your Redeemer), וְיֹצֶרְךָ֖ (and the One forming you) מִבָּ֑טֶן (from the womb),

אָנֹכִ֤י (I am) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH)

עֹ֣שֶׂה (the One making) כֹּ֔ל (all things)

נֹטֶ֤ה (the One stretching out) שָׁמַ֙יִם֙ (the heavens) לְבַדִּ֔י (by Myself alone);

רֹקַ֥ע (the One spreading out) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the earth) מִי (who). אִתִּי׃ (Besides Me)

25  מֵפֵר֙ (breaking) אֹת֣וֹת (the omens) בַּדִּ֔ים (of devisers),

וְקֹסְמִ֖ים (and those devining) יְהוֹלֵ֑ל (making fools of);

מֵשִׁ֧יב (the One turning) חֲכָמִ֛ים (the wise ones) אָח֖וֹר (backward),

וְדַעְתָּ֥ם (and their knowledge) יְשַׂכֵּֽל׃ (making foolish);

26  מֵקִים֙ (the One making stand) דְּבַ֣ר (the word) עַבְדּ֔וֹ (of His servant),

וַעֲצַ֥ת (and the counsel) מַלְאָכָ֖יו (of His messengers); יַשְׁלִ֑ים (fufilling)

הָאֹמֵ֨ר (the One saying) לִירוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (of Jerusalem),

תּוּשָׁ֗ב (She will be inhabited);

וּלְעָרֵ֤י (and of the cities) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah),

תִּבָּנֶ֔ינָה (They will be rebuilt), וְחָרְבוֹתֶ֖יהָ (and her ruins) אֲקוֹמֵֽם׃ (I will raise up).

27  הָאֹמֵ֥ר (The One saying) לַצּוּלָ֖ה (to the deep),

חֳרָ֑בִי (Be dry), וְנַהֲרֹתַ֖יִךְ (and your rivers); אוֹבִֽישׁ׃ (I will dry up).

28  הָאֹמֵ֤ר (The One saying) לְכ֙וֹרֶשׁ֙ (of Cyrus),

רֹעִ֔י (He is My shepherd) וְכָל־ (and all) חֶפְצִ֖י (My delight); יַשְׁלִ֑ם (he will fulfill)

וְלֵאמֹ֤ר (and saying) לִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (of Jerusalem),

תִּבָּנֶ֔ה (She will be rebuilt);

וְהֵיכָ֖ל (and of the temple),

תִּוָּסֵֽד׃ס (Let her foundation be laid).
